Its all systems go for another season of Autosolo.
After hosting two very successful events in 2005, Kerry Motor Club is all set once again to continue the trend in 2006. This year it is intended to introduce some changes to the class structure. Instead of grading the cars by their engine size, they will be classed by body size, i.e. small saloon (Starlet, Mini etc.), medium saloon (Escort, Sunny, etc.) and large saloon (Sierra, Mazda 626 etc.). Motorsport Ireland has also indicated that some basic scrutineering will be introduced for Autotest’s and Autosolo’s during 2006.
Autosolo is a new event combining elements of Autotest and Sprint, both of which are regulated globally by motorsport’s governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA). Competitors pit themselves against the clock, stretching their driving skills to the limit under the rules of the FIA.
With tight turns and narrow lanes (especially between the Spectator Stands in Ballybeggan Park Racecourse), the Autotest sections are an extreme test of driver skill while the Sprint sections allow the true performance of modern cars to be exploited to the full. The result is an exciting event with tyre screaming handbrake turns, close driving, high revving engines and fast acceleration in the straights between the cones.
In Europe, Autosolo has been the learning ground for many film stunt drivers, rally drivers and drivers of other motor sports disciplines. Autosolo is open to all members of the public with a Motorsport Ireland licence at navigator grade or higher.
So far this new form of motor sport has proved to be very competitive with just seconds and in some cases tenths of seconds deciding the final placing’s at the end of the day. Many co-drivers have been more than a match for their regular driving partner when on the stages. The Ladies showed that they could be as competitive as their male counterparts. This is no ‘sissy’ form of motor sport as evidenced by the repair bills encountered by many drivers as a result of their brush with the Ballybeggan Park scenery. Above all else the most important refrain from all of the competitors were that it was ‘great fun and when is the next one being held’. Other motor clubs are now showing an interest in running an Autosolo event.
Kerry Motor Club has two definite Autosolo dates in 2006, 21st May and 2nd July, with the possibility of a third for later in the year.
Regs and Entry form for the event on the 21st of May plus other info. on Autosolo can be obtained by logging on to the Kerry Motor Clubs web page www.kerrymotorclub.com. Entries are restricted to the first 30 entries received. All competitors must be in possession of a 2006 Motorsport Ireland Competition Licence. Event is restricted to 2 wheel drive, non-turbo, less than 2 litre road going cars. Autotest saloons are allowed but specials are exempt.
Cars must be in p.m.o., clean and in a presentable state. Turning up to this event with a car which have been pulled out of a ditch the night prior to the event or which has been used for housing hens will be a waist of your time and effort.
Why not mark these dates in your diary and come along to Ballybeggan Park and sample Motorsport that even your granny would be competitive in. As ever Kerry Motor Club are indebted to Tralee Race committee for allowing us to use their superb facilities at Ballybeggan Park. Any further information can be obtained by tel: 0667127331.
