SLEATOR OPEL RETURN TO 2006 MIDLANDS EAST RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP
2005 saw the introduction of the highly successful clubman championship which based in the Midlands region over 4 events and sponsored and supported by Mullingar Dealership Sleator Opel. The championship ened up with a final rally battle between Andrew Lang and the Cassidy Brothers from Moynalty, with the Cassidy brothers just edging into the championship win on a tie break.

The championship returns in 2006 again supported by Sleator Opel Mullingar and hopes are high for a championship with the same level of excitement as the inaugural season. This year sees the championship grow to encompass an extra round with the G.S.M.C Mini Stages in October.

(Five Rounds, Best Four Scores to Count. Competitors must start a minimum of TWO events to qualify for an award)

Sticking with the tried and tested format of 2005 which made this a championship that appeals to clubmen, the championship will be exclusively for Clubmen, in that WRC type cars are not eligible to score points. The classes are structured as follows;

Class 1: Group N cars up to and including 1600cc 2wd.

Class 1A: Group N cars up to and including 2000cc 2wd.

Class 2: N cars over 2000cc including all 4WD Group N Cars.

Class 3: Clubman (Group A and modified) cars up to and including 1400cc not having more than 2 valves per cylinder - 2 wheel drive only.

Class 4: Clubman (Group A and modified) cars up to and including 1400cc having more than 2 valves per cylinder - 2 wheel drive only.

Class 5: Clubman (Group A and modified) cars from 1401cc up to and including 1650cc not having more than 2 valves per cylinder - 2 wheel drive only.

Class 6: Clubman (Group A and modified) cars from 1401cc up to and including 1650cc having more than 2 valves per cylinder - 2 wheel drive only

Class 7: Clubman (Group A and modified) cars from 1651cc up to and including 2400cc not having more than 2 valves per cylinder - 2 wheel drive only.

Class 8: Clubman (Group A and modified) cars from 1651cc up to and including 2400cc, (including Rotary engined) having more than 2 valves per cylinder - 2 wheel drive only.

Class 9:All other eligible cars including Turbo Charged 2wd, and 4wd cars whose homologation has expired NOT including any WRC’s.

Again as per the 2005 ethos the championship is class based with points scored as per class finish therefore giving a class one competitor an equal footing on overall standings with a competitor in class 9 and vice versa.

Six bonus points will be awarded for each registered competitor starting all five rounds. Competitors who start four rounds AND contribute in a significant manner (as defined by the Championship committee) to a fifth event will be awarded six bonus points. (This is to encourage competitors to work on their “local” event). In addition, registered competitors who are placed on the reserve list of any of the counting rounds, who do not achieve a “start”, will be awarded two points on a once off basis for assisting in the said round. Such points can ONLY be rewarded if proof of assistance at an event is provided. So the scene is very much set for the 2006 season, hopes are high that it will deliver even more than the exciting battles and finale of 2005. The favourites and challengers will be lining up in Birr in late February and battle will commence once more, stand clear Irelands premier Clubman championship is coming to a ditch near you!
