RALLY CHAMPIONS SPEAK AT NUI, GALWAY
The Computer Society of the National University of Ireland, Galway will again
host a day of IT & Motorsport on Thursday 2nd of February. The event kicks off
from 11.00am with a display of racing and rally machinery at the student
services building - Aras na MacLéinn. Including the Irish Hillclimb championship
winning Reynard RF81 Opel of Frank Byrnes and the Formula Opel/Lotus of Mike
Melia.
Later at 7.45pm at the O'Flaherty Theatre, guest speakers will provide the
prelude to a drivers forum hosted by Motorsport journalist Brian Patterson. The
panel includes reigning tarmac champions Eugene Donnelly & Paul Kiely together
with Dermot O'Gorman, Derek McGarrity, Tim McNulty and Anthony Nestor. The
panel will also include Derek McGarrity's Rally Team Manager, Dave Leach
who has worked with Prodrive for over 14 years. Local drivers will also feature
and all will take questions from the audience.
Slide shows from the world of Formula 1, Irish and World Rallying, taken by
Motorsport photographers Joe Laine and John Bayly will be shown. Joe Lane has a
considerable collection of photographs from Irish Motorsport and over the years
he has built a comprehensive photographic anthology of Jordan Grand Prix. John
Bayly photographed the recent Monte Carlo world championship rally. This year's
event was particularly interesting as it featured three Irish teams, including
Austin McHale, his son Gareth and Wexford's Eamonn Boland.
The event is open to
members of the public and will also be broadcast live on the Internet.

Later in the evening guest speakers will be a prelude to a drivers
forum where the reigning tarmac champions Eugene Donnelly & Paul Kiely
will answer questions from the audience. The will be joined by Dermot
O’Gorman, Derek McGarrity, Tim McNulty and Anthony Nestor. Questions
might include, everything you wanted to know about pace notes, setting
up a car, tyre choice, time cards, etc.
