It was former Club Champion Robert Moffett who took the spoils in his formidable Escort 6R4, still bearing the scars of battle from his roll on the finishing line of his last run in one of the later events in 2004. The CombiLift director from Clontibret Co. Monaghan was fastest on all 3 timed runs to win by 1.5 seconds from reigning Club Champion Patrick Higgins in his Nova with Joseph Smith from Castletara third in a hired 2.0Ltr 16 valve engined Mk2 escort a further 4.6 seconds back.
Class 1 was won by Mickey Conlon in his Rallycross Mini coming home 2 seconds clear of Tommy Donlon’s Citroen AX with Gerard Greene third in his familiar yellow Nova. The Class 2 spoils went to Patrick Higgins in his Nova while Daniel McKenna was second in class and the leading Junior with David Kerr third in his Peugeot 205. Kieran McCarra survived a few drama’s to win Class 3 while Martin Devine in the ex-Ollie McCormick Nova was second and Jim McKenna put his hire car to good use to take third. Due to the large number of entries in Class 3 a 4th and 5th in class trophies were awarded, these went to Maurice Moffett and Mervyn Wedlock respectively.
Class 4 went to James Cassidy from Moynalty in his Mk2 Escort with the Peugeot 205 RWD of Gerard McArdle second in class and Nigel McGinn was third after failing to complete his third run when he struck a barrel and flattened the wing of his pristine Mk2 Escort. Robert Moffett’s overall win saw him come out of Class 5 and the class win went to Joseph Smith in his first run in a 2.0 16 valve engined car. Dessie Tierney was second in Class 5 in his Rallycross Vauxhall Tigra with reigning V-MAC Silo’s Champion Ronnie Coulter third driving his Talbot Sunbeam instead of his usual Rallycross Astra.
Sunday’s event saw the opening round of the new Junior Championship for competitors aged between 16 and 19 years and after round 1 six competitors have registered, Daniel McKenna, Vincent McAree, Richard Moffett, Mark Wedlock, Stephen McArdle and Andrew Grennan. On Sunday Daniel’s 5th overall placing saw him take maximum points for round 1. Round 2 of the V-MAC Silos Championship takes place on February 13th .
