Border Championship Preview - Feely and Fox maintain the edge
As we have reached the midway stage in the Quinn Group Championship , its is not surprising that the table lead is shared by two specific crews , Shane Feely and Jim Mc Grath in Class 6 and Adrian Fox and Phillip Tobin in Class ten ,both having displayed consistency across the three opening rounds which has culminated in them each having secured three maximum scores entering round four in the Newry and Mourne. As both the Boyle crew and the men from Rockory have in the past been in sight of the overall title , only last year Feely took the 3rd overall as Mc Grath on the notes took 2nd in the Quinn Group Championship , while in 2003 it was a closer call for Adrian Fox and Phillip Tobin , entering the final round in Donegal in contention for the outright title , secured a further maximum at the penultimate round which saw them among three crews to finish on four maximums , the result being determined on dropped scores , on this occasion Adrian took third in the drivers title , while Phillip was awarded 2nd on the Navigator table.

Even though these deserving crews are in a somewhat comfortable position their still remains underlying threat from competitors who have to date ,accrued two maximum scores, including former championship winners Trevor Lancashire and Noel Hall , Enda Keenan with this year Paul Garry on the notes , or indeed Andrew Mullen and Elaine who fell foul of the low class five entry in Cavan picking up only eight points for the class win.

With the Tydavnet crew , Enda Keenan and Paul Garry absent from the Mourne starters list and the the Ballisodare husband and wife crew once again expected to suffer the consequences of the low class entry , the only emerging threat to the current leaders at this point can only come from the class twelve hero’s of Trevor Lancashire and Noel Hall even though the competition among the modified 1600s is tight this season.

The battle at class one has saw Brendan Gormonly / Aidan Gannon move to the top of the table as their fellow Tubbercurry duo dropped to third due to a retirement on Cavan while the emerging Mayo crew of Mc Hale and Mc Carthy advance into second place as they progressively set better times in the Yaris.Enda Hallinan’s retirement on Cavan gave Jarlath Barry /Kieran Carroll the advantage to place them on the top of the class two table with the intension of using Newry as their dropped round in preparation for their home event in July. The five minute margin by Brendan Cumiskey /Proncias Mc Kenna on the father and son crew of Packie and Colin Duffy in Cavan did consolidate their lead but the second place by the Drumlish men puts them tied for second with one round droped.Class four remains totally in the control of Willie Fannin / Mick Courtney coming home in tenth place behind the WRC’s on round three. While Thomas O Rourke struggled with a water leak on the concluding stages of Cavan a further class seven win secures his comfortable lead reflected also by the navigators position ,John Mc Grath..Charlie Donnelly and Paddy Toner tops the WRC’S in class eight but with Sean Devine entered in the Mourne that one point margin will be short lived .A disappointing run in Cavan for the class nine leaders , Thomas Carolan / Declan Smith saw them finish fifth in this tightly fought class on this occasion with young Ronan Cox picking up a nine for his efforts. Raymond Conlon / James O Reilly and neighboring crew Jim Mc Kenna/Tomas Treanor fought a tight battle across all nine stages in Cavan with the black Corrola finishing with a one minute advantage giving them a seven point lead on the points table entering round four. The 2 litre 16 valve class is still a close call between Paddy Boyle/ Marty Sherlock and Gordon Rogers/Philip Mc Entee both destined for the Coolie Peninsula with only one point separating the Cavan rivals. The Class fifteen competition lies between David Mc Nulty / Martin Mc Garrity and Brian Corey/ H.M. Mc Kenna with the Dromore men holding a five point lead. The classic stages of the Newry and Mourne Stages will as always present a challenging but rewarding experience and this year will be no exception . Best of luck to all concerned.

The rally is based in Newry and will be using the familiar tarmac stages on Slieve Gullion and Camlough mountains, just a few miles south west of Newry town.

The rally, organised by a team of experienced senior Officials who are also regular competitors themselves, will consist of three stages run four times giving almost 39 miles of smooth mountain tarmac. Servicing will be centralised in Carnbane Industrial Estate just off the Newry by-pass.

This year the rally is delighted to have retained our generous main sponsors. Kenny Gass, proprietor of Gosford road Service Station and his brother Maurice. they have teamed up to offer the rally a significant financial package which will help the club stage an excellent event.
