With the help of Sperrin tourism many overseas visitors came to compete notable finishers were Liam Egan from the US driving Eugene Donnelly’s WRC Corolla and Tony Arnsby from Tyne and Wear finishing in eighteenth position.

N. Ireland Rally Championship returns to the Sperrins - Event Preview
Round four of the “Pacenotes” N. Ireland rally Championship returns to the Sperrins on 21nd May. All the major contenders will be at the start ramp outside Walsh’s hotel on Saturday morning at 10.00am. An oversubscribed entry has given the organisers the usual headaches, but Clerk of the Course, Philip Shaw, has laid out a fantastic loop of stages in the local forests including the mighty Banagher to entertain both competitors and spectators alike.
With funding from Sperrin Tourism to increase the profile of the event, many entries have been received from the UK, Southern Ireland and the USA.
Number one seed is Dungiven man, Kevin Lynch in his Subaru world rally car with Cookstown’s Glen Allen in his new WRC Toyota Corolla hot on his heels at number two. Raymond Johnston and Denis Biggerstaff in a duo of Subaru world rally cars, run ahead the rally sponsor Kieran Shaw of KBB Doors Ltd, in a Mitsubishi WRC. From the USA Liam Egan will have Sean Moriarty guiding him throughout the event. Top English competitor Michael Glendinning runs at number twenty four. Craig Bennet again brings his fantastic ex-works Ford Focus WRC back to the woods for the first time in 05.
Local drivers Seamus Donnelly, Johnny McKenna and Raymond Mason head the Gp N challenge but will Dungannon’s Stephen Moore or Cookstowns John McGlaughlin head the Gp N battle on Saturday evening? Don’t forget some of the N Ireland forest rounds have been won outright by Gp N cars in the past.
With the fantastic entry of WRC and Gp N cars first two wheel drive car is Alistair Cochrane at thirty one with Camillus Bradley, Frank Kelly, Andy Magee, Seamus O’Connell and Mark Barnett in hot pursuit. Noticeably missing from the entry list is local man Greg McCormick but younger brother Marty has stepped into the hot seat and together with local drivers such as Bernard O’Neill “sheriff” and James “Hairy” Cassidy the two wheel battle promises to be epic.
It’s all adding up to be a fantastic battle in the Sperrins on Saturday 21st. To help you keep up to speed during the day MADMC offer a text message service on Saturday morning at Walsh’s. Program’s with detailed maps of the best vantage points, driver profiles and entry details as well as “Aunty Lag” to keep you amused between the stages are on sale and available on Saturday morning at Walsh’s as well as local filling stations.
