Coleman Award Winner Prepares For Home Event
Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman Award winner, Eamon McElvaney, is currently preparing to compete in his home event the Monaghan Stages Rally this weekend (Sunday 24th April 2005).

The event, which is based in Monaghan town, will consist of three stages each run three times and is a counting round of the 2005 Border Rally Championship. Despite the event not being part of Eamon’s National Championship campaign the 20 year old is really looking forward to competing in his home rally and of course gaining more valuable experience.

“I can’t wait to compete in Monaghan,” commented Eamon. “It’ll be great to compete at home and more importantly its another opportunity to make my own pacenotes.”

The Hillgrove Hotel will once again host the Monaghan Stages Rally, and the annual motorsport event will take place this weekend with the main action starting on Sunday morning. The ‘Magically Majestical’ atmosphere of this Hotel is unparalleled in the region, and with the increased numbers of visitors arriving for the rally – the scene is set for a top mix of rallying and socialising!

The 2005 stages have a new Clerk of Course on board namely Brendan McCrudden, and with him are 3 relatively new stages. The first stage consists of almost 9 miles with a mix of fast and cresty action. The stage is close to Monaghan town and includes approx 11 junctions of spectator access and plenty of sideways action. Stage 2 is further North and takes the crews close to Tyrone border with almost 10 miles of competitive driving. Again 11 junctions where garunetted fast action is scheduled for this ‘flowing’ drivers stage.

Stage 3 moves across the Derry N2 road and is the shortest of the bunch with nearly 7 miles to play on. The start is twisty and testing but opens up into fast sections with caution needed on a number of slippy junctions. With approx 13 junctions to visit along with being the last of the day - this stage could well see a grand finale of drivers battling for the win!

The weather will play an important part on Sundays Rally as the WRC machinery have been brought to order by some of the hardend Group N contenders when the conditions are dry. The many fast sections will suit the GpN crews but again the shear number of junctions may give the edge back to the WRC brigade. Likewise, the ‘hard battlers’ in the RWD sections will be hoping for dry conditions as they too have proved their importance with the top runners.

This quality field, coupled with a host of local heros will surely set the scene for a great entertaining day of motorsport. As always, County Monaghan Motor Club will hold a training session on Saturday night before the rally for all drivers and navigators which will explain how to ‘manage’ their Time Card and make them more aware of the task at hand.

Rally Programmes for the event will be available from Friday morning and the action gets underway from the Hillgrove Hotel at 10am on Sunday morning.
