Breen wins 2005 Ferodo Bonus Scheme
With just the final round of the Ferodo Bonus Scheme 2005 to go, there were three drivers in with a shout of taking the title, and the €2000 that goes with it. Ray Breen was hot favourite, but was closely followed by Alan Ring, and last years winner, Willie Fannin. It was set to be a big battle on the stages, not made any easier by
Ray Breen had a fantastic day-long battle with Denis Cronin for the outright rally win, eventually taking victory by just 3 seconds. Ray had some gearbox problems late in the day, and with just 2 stages to go, he was 9 seconds behind the Cork driver. With a a superb drive over the final two tests, Ray overhauled him to take his 4th win of the year. Jim Harrison was Breens most likely challenger for class 8 Ferodo points, but the English driver had a very subdues day, which was finally cut short when he took a wheel off his Subaru WRC in stage 6.
Behind Breen, Melvyn Evans had an excellent run to 4th, just being pipped to 3rd by Patrick Elliot. Kevin Barrett concnetrated on getting a finish, and capped an excellent year by taking 3rd overall in the National series, and 8th in the Bonus Scheme.
Unlike Breen, Alan Ring and Willie Fannin both had disasterous days!! Fannin spent most of the day chnaging gear with a ratchet after his gear lever broke off, while Ring lost over 4 minutes with a puncture. Still, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Bonus Scheme was a good reward.
Ed Powers high-revving kit car Clio wasn’t exactly suited to the streaming wet conditions, but he made sure of his 4th place in the Bonus Scheme with a 3rd place in class 6. One of Eds closest rivals all year, Dominic Naughton, didn’t finish, but still takes 5th overall.
The other drivers who finish in the prize-winning places are Charlie Donnelly, who didn’t start in Skibbereen, class 2 pair Enda Hallinan and Seamus Gorman, and Raymond Gilleece. Enda took another class win, his 5th of the year, to capture 7th place, and National class 2in the process. Seamus Gorma didn’t start the Fastnet, but takes 9th place nevertheless. Raymond Gilleeces speed and consistency took him to the 10th and last money-winning place in the Bonus Scheme. He just lost out on 9th place as he was beaten in class 3 on the day by fellow Civic driver Pat Callanan.
Congratulations again to Ray Breen on winning the €2000 first prize for the 2005 Ferodo Bonus Scheme title. The new national champion really took control over the latter half of the season, and his points total is the highest winning score in the 3 years of the scheme.
As ever, there was a draw for €100 for all registered Ferodo Bonus Scheme starts, and for the 2nd time this year, Enda Hallnian is the winner!
Congratulations to all Ferodo prize winners, and all who have taken victories during the year!
DUNLOP CHAMPION BREEN WINS MARINE HOTEL FASTNET RALLY IN THRILLING FINISH.
Newly crowned Dunlop National Rally Champions, Ray Breen and Andrew Purcell (Ford Focus WRC) won the Glandore based Marine Hotel Fastnet Rally, the final round of the series with a dramatic late flurry on the final two stages that saw them edge out Denis Cronin and Helen O’Sullivan (Subaru WRC) by a mere three seconds. Cronin led by 27 seconds entering the final pair of stages near Drinagh and by his own admission, backed off a little too much and allowed Breen snatch victory as he took 30 seconds out of Cronin over the final two stages.
There was also late drama in the chase for third, which for the third successive year, was secured by Cavan’s, Patrick Elliott and his co-driver, Martin Cahill. They pipped Welsh driver, Mel Evans and co-driver Sean Mullally, also is a Subaru WRC, by a mere second.
The Group N category was won by Michael Curran/Fabian McShane (Mitsubishi), they clinched the Patterson’s RallyNews Award within the Dunlop series.
Local hero, Cronin dominated the opening stage, Coolkellure, near Drimoleague where he went 12 seconds ahead of second placed Breen, who opined that he was a little unhappy about the manner of his stage start, a factor that probably cost five seconds.
Cronin was a little surprised that his performance yielded such a lead.
Welsh ace, Melvyn Evans slotted into third, a further four seconds behind Breen with a strong performance that saw him take a few chances on the slippery tarmac.
Last year’s event winner, Jim Harrison was down in fourth place – 25 seconds off the lead, Patrick Elliott on his return to the Dunlop series, held fifth with Tony Davies (Subaru WRC) and the Group N Mitsubishi of Michael Curran sharing sixth place. Davies endured a time consuming spin.
Both Cronin and Breen recorded the same time on the second stage, Evans continued to remain in third but lost ground to the top duo. Patrick Elliott continued to experience gearbox trouble, he retained fourth from Harrison with Michael Curran making a strong impression in sixth place and a clear leader of the Group N category.
The Subaru of
Nigel Hicklin’s Subaru was seventh from Kevin Barrett, Kevin Kelleher and Cyril McCullough. Alan Ring lost a huge chunk of time when he had to stop a change a punctured wheel, earlier, fellow Group N rival, James O’Sullivan had steering difficulties and Willie Fannin found if difficult to change gear when the gear lever snapped off.
Cronin regained the lead following the completion of a rain lashed Stage 5. A combination of factors stretched his four second advantage to 27 seconds by the end of Stage 6, Cronin revelled in the wet conditions while Breen’s Ford Focus developed a gearbox problem. Meanwhile, Jim Harrison/Harvey Bell retired their Subaru on S.S. 6 with a damaged front wheel when their car aquaplaned.
The final two stages brought a sting in the tail as Breen reeled in his West Cork rival, who was actually driving the Subaru previously campaigned by Breen. The new Dunlop champion gained 14 and 16 seconds respectively to win by three seconds. Evans, who sorted a gearbox malady, looked set to take third, but co-driver Sean Mullally flipped over two pages of his pacenotes in error and the confusion saw them lose out to Elliott/Cahill by a mere second.
Curran set a stunning pace to clinch a superb Group N win, he was fifth from Nigel Hicklin (Subaru), Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) edged out the Mitsubishi of Dickie Curran on the final stage to take seventh overall.
James O’Sullivan (Mitsubishi) had a good run towards the end and ended up ninth and Kevin Barrett, who was tenth, secured third in the Dunlop series, his best ever result.

fast….faster….fastnet!- Rally Preview
The Dunlop National Rally championship culminates next Sunday with the Fastnet Rally in the tranquil harbour village of Glandore. The Marine Hotel is again headline sponsor and rally H.Q. for the weekend with plenty of entertainment promised both on and off the west cork stages over the holiday weekend.
Clerk of the course Donnacha O’hAodha and his team have put together a challenging route for the 150 starters with four different stage locations consisting of 85 competitive miles. The rally will again be based in Glandore with parc ferme and scrutiny taking place in the NCT complex in Skibbereen. This year’s route encompasses territory from Dunmanway to Bantry with centralised servicing near the village of Caheragh.
Leading the 150 strong field away on Sunday the 30th will be last year’s winners Jim Harrison and Harvey Bell. The Macclesfield crew will compete in their McKinstry Motorsport run Subaru Impreza S9 WRC. Jim will be hoping for a repeat performance of his victory on last year’s event to end his mixed year on a high. Starting at number 2 are newly crowned Dunlop National Champions Ray Breen and Andrew Purcell. The Waterford pairing have had a dream year in the National series with victories in Ravens Rock, Sligo and the Stonethrowers rally. They sealed the championship in the penultimate round; the Clare Stage Rally finishing second to their main challenger Charlie Donnelly. Ray will no doubt have his eye on the podium to round of a season to remember in his Dunlop shod Ford Focus WRC.
Denis Cronin and Helen Sullivan occupy the number 3 slot. Denis is driving an ex-Breen Subaru Impreza WRC which he used to top the time sheets in the West Cork rally earlier this year on his way to outright victory on the 023 Tiles Southern Four Championship. Denis may struggle a little in the technology stakes against the machinery up ahead but with the stages traversing close to his Ballylickey base, he will definitely be in with a shout for outright victory.
Dunmanway man Liam McCarthy is in at number 4 in his Toyota Corolla WRC. Liam is partnered as always by Carrigalines Kieran Murphy. The Cork duo will be hoping to dial in a good performance at the weekend, having been second to Harrison last year by the narrowest of margins. No doubt he will also be anxious for a rematch with Cronin after an epic battle earlier in the year at the West Cork rally where mechanical difficulties put pay to his challenge for top spot.
Kevin Barrett slots in at number 5 in his McKinstry run S8 Subaru WRC. Kevin, partnered by Barry Goodman has been the model of consistency all year putting in some fine performances to lie 3rd overall in the series.
Patrick Elliot makes a welcome return to the National Championship seeded at number 6 next weekend. Patrick has missed a number of round this year due to illness but is back to full health for the final round.
Overseas visitors Melvyn Evans and Tony Davies are seeded at number 7 and 8 respectively. No strangers to rallying in West Cork they will undoubtedly put it up to the crews ahead. Hugh Martin Doherty and Nigel Hicklin round off the top ten both campaigning Prodrive machinery. Nigel is using Noel Redmond’s S9 which has been converted to left hand drive for him to use in the final two rounds of the Southern Four rally championship, the Cork 20 and the Fastnet.
Leading a strong Group N entry in this year’s event is Michael Curran at number 11. Michael can seal Group N honours at this weekend’s event with relative ease such is the point’s advantage he has accumulated after a dominant performance in the previous nine rounds. Michael may well put his Mitsubishi Evolution 7 in amongst the WRC machinery if previous form is anything to go by. The 2004 Group N champion Willie Fannin in his Ashfield Builders backed Subaru N9 is in at number 12 and second of the Group N brigade. Willie will be out to take the fight to Curran and prove his metal in the hotly contested showroom category. Next up is Munster Joinery man Alan Ring in another Subaru, this time a latest spec N11. Alan is 2nd in the series to Curran but needs to finish well to keep Fannin at bay. After crashing out of the Cork 20 on the very first stage Alan will be keen to punch in some quick times on the final round of the championship. Number 14 spot is occupied by local pairing of James O’Sullivan and Adrian Deasy in their 023 Tiles livered Lancer Evo 7. After a successful season last year where James finished second in the National Group N Championship, this year has been one to forget with mechanical maladies compounded by a host of non finishes plaguing his year. The Southern 4 championship sponsor will be looking for a return to form on his home event where he took top spot in Group N last year finishing a fine 8th overall. Clonakilty pairing of Kevin and Martin Kelleher are starting with 15 on the door of their Evo 8 and will no doubt be pushing hard for a top spot. Local ace Kieran O’Callaghan enters the fray at number 16 in his ex-Arron McHale Lancer Evo 5. Kieran may be suffering from a lack of match practice but will be out to mix it with the top Group N runners albeit in an older spec machine. Cork teenager Owen Murphy is at number 18, Wexford’s PJ McGrath occupies 19. Kilcrohane brothers Jer and Stephen O’Donovan are at 19 while the top 20 is rounded off by Tommy Randles/Diarmuid Lynch in their DynoRod Celica GT4.
Anthony O’Halloran is first of the rear wheel drive contingent at number 21. The Clare native will compete in his trusted Opel Manta. At 22 are north/south pairing of Wesley Patterson with the irrepressible Bob Kelly on the notes. Eamon Murphy at 24 will bring his immaculate 2.4 Escort Mk2 for a blast over the stages, keeping a watchful eye on the two in front.
The 1600 charge is lead by Brian O’Mahony in his ex-works Ford Puma. Brian has been having a good run of late putting his Puma in amongst the top runners earlier this month in the Cork 20 rally. Kerry/Cork combination of Ken and Connor O’Neil are next up their similar Puma and will be trying to overturn O’Mahonys dominance of late and revert to the form which saw them finish ahead of the Corkman in the Rally of the Lakes. A battle royale in the offing! Third on the road in the Group A 1600 class is Keith Power at number 31 in another Puma KitCar. Local Dunmanway crew of Jason McSweeney and Michael Farrell are among the first of the non-works machine in their rapid Honda Civic at number 50.
The 1600 modified class will be closely fought affair between a plethora of hard chargers including Patrick Corcoran, Pat Casey, Philip Cross, Tim O’Donovan and David Guest.
Other local crews hoping to feature prominently are Gerard O’Connell at number 53 in his pinto powered Escort, Martin Lordan in his class 9 Escort and Rossmore's Vincent Bennett who has rented Eugene Donnelly infamous G3 for his home event.
There are a number of quick men on the reserves as well; Dickie Curran father of Group N leader Michael Curran is 2nd in his new Mitsubishi Evo 8.5. Tadgh Linehan in his BioTech Subaru N9 finished last year’s event 10th overall and will also be hoping to be among the starters.
