Ferodo Bonus Scheme Report
The Ravens Rock Stages Rally brings us to the half way point in the season, and again we had most of the Bonus
Scheme front runners in action. In all there were 27 Bonus Scheme starters, with most classes well represented.
Could Fannins lead be pegged back, or would he still be well out in front…?
Wow! What a race in group N! Willie Fannin and Alan Ring were swapping times all day, and ended up level on time,
with Willie taking the honours, by having been just 2 seconds quicker than Alan on the last stage. Willie extends
his lead over Alan to 8 points now, and indeed Alan has been overtaken by rally winner Ray Breen.
Ray took a well deserved first win of the year, and leaps into the lead of the Dunlop National Championship to
boot! The early rally leader was Jim Harrison, but he was overhauled by Breen, and then retired on stage 6. Breen
led right to the end, to take victory by 20 seconds from the Corolla WRC of Charlie Donnelly. Charlie lies 4th in
the Bonus Scheme at present, but has one less score than the drivers in front of him.
Other drivers featuring strongly in the prize-money positions are Enda Hallinan and Ed Power. Despite a rather
disastrous day Enda kept going to the end, and was rewarded with 2nd place Ferodo points in class 2! Ed Power had
a rather better day, finishing 3rd in class 6, and taking 10 points as the first Ferodo driver home in his class.
These scores leave Enda and Ed on equal scores in 5th and 6th places in the Scheme.
Around the other classes it was generally a good day for Ferodo drivers. There were class wins for Andrew Mullen,
Tomás O Rourke and James Stafford.
Indeed such has been the pace of drivers on the Bonus Scheme this year, that Ferodo drivers now lead 11 out of
the 15 national championship classes!! Enda Hallinan (cl.2) , Raymond Gilleece (cl.3), Willie Fannin (cl.4),
Andrew Mullen (cl.5), Dominic Naughton (cl.6), Tomás O Rourke (cl.7), Ray Breen (cl.8), Simon Evans (cl.9),
Michael Conlon (cl.10), Anthony O Halloran (cl.11) and Martin Ward (cl.14). It’s quite some list!
As well as the end-of-year points prizes, there is a draw for registered Ferodo competitors starting each rally.
Winner of the 100euro in the Ferodo Bonus Draw for the Ravens Rock Rally is Civic driver Enda Hallinan.
Congratulations!
BREEN & DUNLOP ROCKS WATERFORD (Report courtesy of Irish Dunlop – sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship)
With his first major rally victory, Kilkenny’s, Ray Breen, co-driven by Andrew Purcell, in their Dunlop shod Ford Focus WRC finished 20 seconds ahead of the Toyota Corolla WRC of Charlie Donnelly/Paddy Toner in the Suirway Forklifts Raven’s Rock Rally, the fifth round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship that was based at the Ard Ri Hotel in Waterford City. Denis Cronin/Helen O’Sullivan (Subaru WRC) finished 52 seconds further behind in third place.
Breen’s victory allows him take the outright lead in the ten round series, he is now 13 points ahead of Donnelly. Meanwhile, two of their major championship rivals, Kevin Lynch and Jim Harrison crashed out during the eight stage event. Another Dunlop contender, Noel Redmond (Subaru) crashed on the penultimate stage.
The Group N category was won by Willie Fannin/Michael Courtney (Subaru), albeit on a tie-break from the similar Subaru of Alan Ring/Derek Brannigan. The two wheel drive category saw James Coleman/Eoin O’Neill (Escort) finish eight seconds ahead of the similar Escort of Liam Wall/Bob Kelly.
Harrison made his customary quick start, on this occasion, it yielded an eight second lead over both Donnelly and Breen, who shared second spot. Harrison, Breen and Lynch shared the same time on the second stage, Tory Hill and at the service halt, Harrison led Breen by eight seconds with Lynch a further three seconds adrift in third, his Subaru had a gear problem that was set to be addressed at service.
Second placed Breen reckoned the dust thrown up by Lynch was costing him a few vital seconds.
Donnelly, in fourth spot lost time with an overshoot on the second stage and he found himself 12 seconds behind Lynch. Patrick Elliott slotted his Subaru into fifth ahead of the Subaru WRC’s of Denis Cronin and Noel Redmond. Kevin Barrett continued his recent run of good form, he was eighth in a top ten that also included Niall Maguire and Richie Curran (Escort Cosworth).
Out on the third stage, Breen cut the deficit to five seconds in a relatively unchanged top five. Then, on S.S. 4, Mooncoin, Lynch crashed out, his Subaru hitting a wall, luckily, himself and co-driver, Gordon Noble both escaped injury.
Breen set another fastest time (S.S. 4) and that allowed him take a three second lead over Harrison, who reckoned that he lost a few seconds when he slowed to check at the scene of Lynch’s accident. Charlie Donnelly inherited third even though his Toyota Corolla WRC was on manual gear change; he was dropping time to the leading duo. Cronin had a good drive through the fourth stage and moved into fourth spot ahead of Elliott, who opined that his Subaru was handling very erratically. Barrett was trouble free in sixth ahead of Maguire, the reigning national champion was trying to get back on the pace.
Noel Redmond had overshoots on stages three and four, he was eighth ahead of Curran and Group N leader, Alan Ring, who took the final place in the top ten at the half way mark.
Elsewhere, Liam McCarthy (Toyota Corolla WRC) dropped several minutes with a broken driveshaft, earlier, transmission woes on board his Subaru WRC at the start of the second stage ended Sean Gallagher’s rally.
In Group N, Alan Ring (Subaru) was just two seconds ahead of Willie Fannin (Subaru) with PJ McGrath holding third spot in the showroom category. Kevin Kelleher, second fastest in the category on the opening stage, lost over five minutes when his Mitsubishi punctured on the second stage. Another driver to lose time with a puncture was Michael Curran (Mitsubishi).
James Coleman (Escort) led the two-wheel drive category, eight seconds clear of Liam Wall, who had a slight indiscretion on one of the stages.
Breen stretched his lead to nine seconds out on S.S. 5, a repeat of the morning’s first stage. However, the sixth stage of the rally claimed Harrison, who crashed out - leaving Breen out in front - 27 seconds ahead of Donnelly, whose earlier problem with the gear mechanism was traced to a hydraulic pipe that had come adrift.
Denis Cronin (Subaru) slotted into third with Elliott at a loss to explain why his driving wasn’t yielding better stage times. Redmond and Maguire shared fifth place at the expense of Kevin Barrett, who dropped to seventh. Richie Curran (Escort Cosworth) held a trouble free eighth.
In Group N, a two second margin separated Alan Ring from Willie Fannin, the former relatively relaxed at the final service halt. Third placed Michael Curran (Mitsubishi) was 25 seconds further adrift.
In the two wheel drive, James Coleman (Escort) was ten seconds ahead of the Vauxhall Nova of James Stafford with Liam Wall (Escort) some 13 seconds in arrears.
Battling for fifth spot, Noel Redmond crashed out on the penultimate stage where Breen was quickest and the only other drivers to get through the stage were Donnelly, Cronin, Elliott and Maguire. Donnelly took eight seconds out of Breen on the final test but the Kilkenny driver had already adjusted his pace to secure a major victory and sole leadership of the Dunlop National Rally Championship.
The race for Group N went to the final stage where fastest time by Willie Fannin was enough to edge out Alan Ring albeit on a tie-break. James Coleman (Escort), the event sponsor, was the top two wheel drive performer.
Ka Championship - Buckley On Top At The Rock.
As the sun shone on the Ravens Rock Rally based in Waterford, Mark Buckley from Whites Cross, Cork secured victory in the second round of the 2005 KaMotions KA Rally Championship.
Competition between the "pocket rockets" was as intense as ever, with all crews trying to assert their authority on the event. The clocks at the end of Special Stage 1 showed identical times for joint leaders Colm Forde and Mark Buckley. Championship newcomer Donal Lennon was a mere nine seconds adrift of the leading duo with the fast starting local lady, Sharon Power a further 11 seconds behind, despite a spin.
The battle for the lead moved to Special Stage 2, where amazingly the times set by Colm Forde in the Forde Motors car were again identically matched by Mark Buckley. Mark commented at first service, "We are having a great battle with Colm, but there is a long way to go yet!"
The second loop of stages was to prove pivotal as Colm Forde suffered brake fade and lost over 20 seconds to the hard charging Buckley on Special Stage 3 and lost even more on Special Stage 4. Mark, in the Buckley Tyres supported car, arrived at second service with a comfortable 1 minute margin over Sharon Power, whose impressive run saw her progress up the leaderboard.
Mark, refusing to ease off, pushed hard over the final loop setting fastest time on each of the final stages to extend his lead. Sharon Power, on her first stages rally, produced a textbook drive giving a clear signal of her intentions for the rest of the championship.
Mark Buckley following his Ravens Rock win, now takes the lead of the championship.
"I always knew that I would have a great battle on my hands here today. I am delighted to win but there is still a long way to go in the Championship. The next round of the will be in Cork, hopefully it will prove to be lucky for us" said Mark.
The next round of the 2005 KaMotions KA Rally Championship sees the KA contenders head into the forests for the Cork Forestry Rally on July 23/24.
Breen/Purcell win to take outright National championship lead.
Ray Breen and Andrew Purcell scored their first National championsip win in Carrick-on-Suir MC’s Suirway Forklifts Raven’s Rock Rally based on Waterford, with their Focus finishing the day 20 seconds ahead of the Corolla of Derry’s Charlie Donnelly and Paddy Toner.
This gives Breen who won the Birr Stages rally earlier in the year the sole lead in the
Dunlop National Rally Championship, as Kevin Lynch, who shared top place in the points table going into yesterday’s rally, was one of several top drivers who went off the road and retired. English title contender Jim Harrison was another of the casualties, along with Noel Redmond.
Third place went to Denis Cronin’s older 99 Spec Impreza, which extended his lead in the 023 Tiles Southern 4 Championship. Patrick Elliott and Kevin Barrett, followed in 4th and 5th, while a close battle for the Group N Production class saw Willie Fannin take the honours on a tiebreak from Alan Ring.

Ravens Rock Returns to Waterford

DUNLOP CONTENDERS READY TO ROCK IN WATERFORD
(Preview courtesy of Irish Dunlop – sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship)
The Dunlop National Rally Championship reaches mid
point on Sunday next with the eight stage Raven's Rock
Rally that is based at the McEniff Ard Ri Hotel in
Waterford. Although Kevin Lynch and Jim Harrison have
each won two rounds, the Dunlop series is one of the
most keenly contested in recent years especially with
the likes of joint leader, Ray Breen, Charlie
Donnelly, Patrick Elliott all still in with a
realistic chance of winning the ten round series.
Lynch, who shares top spot with Breen (both drivers
are on a total of 58 points) is the top seed. After
several wins in recent times, Lynch crashed out of
last week's Donegal international Rally and will be
eager to repeat his win in Waterford some twelve
months ago.
His arch rival, Jim Harrison, also in a Subaru WRC and
winner of the last round in Limerick, is now very
conscious of the value of Dunlop points, a very
impresive starter, Harrison knows that consistency is
all important.
Charlie Donnelly, on board his Toyota Corolla WRC
showed in Limerick that he has the talent to trouble
his rivals and were it not for the addition of
penalties, he would have taken second spot.
Incidentally, both Donnelly and Ray Breen have
appealed the decision of the Stewards of the event to
the sport's governing body, Motorsport Ireland.
Meanwhile, Breen, will start from the number four
berth in his Dunlop shod Ford Focus and what could be
termed home ground for the Kilkenny born driver, he
will be determined to rack up his first win of the
season. "Everybody else apart from myself has dropped
scores at the moment so the leader board may be a bit
misleading from that respect. I need to have a few
top finishes, and a win at this stage would be nice."
Cavan's, Patrick Elliott, like Breen has yet to win a
national round and both drivers are close to achieving
their goal. Elliott, who retired from his home rally
in Cavan, took points in Limerick to get his
championship back on track.
Reigning champion, Niall Maguire in a Subaru WRC is
seventh overall at present and the Monaghan driver
freely admits that the pace in this year's Dunlop
campaign has moved up a few gears from his
championship win in 2004.
The top ten in Waterford also features Melvyn Evans,
Denis Cronin, Noel Redmond and Sean Gallagher, all in
Subaru WRC's. Redmond has the pace to match the
leading drivers and a notable feature this season is
that the likes of Evans and Gallagher are very capable
of splitting the points.
Kevin Barrett, who finished a fine fifth overall in
Donegal last Sunday is also capable of featuring
amongst the top contingent.
Other entries include, Cork driver, Liam McCarthy
(Toyota Corolla WRC), Richie Curran (Escort Cosworth)
and David Long (Sierra).
A fascinating Group N entry features Dunlop
Championship leader, Willie Fannin in his Subaru.
Opposition will emanate from Kevin Kelleher, Mike
Curran, James O'Sullivan, Don Butler, Ian Barrett all
in Mitsubishi's and Subaru drivers, Alan Ring, Gabriel
Martin, PJ McGrath, Eoin Doyle and Eddie Garry.
Others in the line-up are Tom Randles (Toyota Celica),
David NcNulty and Joe McHugh in Escort Cosworths.
Forest competitor, John McGaffin drives a Subaru and
Jack Sleator wheels out a Skoda
Fabia WRC.
In the rear wheel drive class, David James, Eamonn
Murphy, Liam Wall and James Coleman all in Ford
Escorts will battle for honours.
Joe Connolly (Ford Escort) is amongst the Historic
entry that also includes the Escorts of Denis Moynihan
and Martin Sheahan.
The Junior category features
William White (Escort) from Dublin along with
Waterford drivers David Power (Peugeot), Gemma Kerley
(Vauxhall) and William Ryan (Honda).

The Raven’s Rock rally in Waterford is the venue once again for Round 3 of the 023 Tiles Southern 4 Championship. Last year's championship saw 11 drivers in with a chance of glory heading into the final round. Most of those drivers have committed again to the 2005 championship including current champion Liam McCarthy, and last year’s runner up and current championship leader Denis Cronin. Liam McCarthy became the first double champion in 2004 and will be keen to make it 3 in row this year.
023 Tiles are back on board as title sponsors, the fourth year that James O’Sullivan has supported the championship. The support from 023 Tiles has helped raise the profile of the championship, with some of the best drivers from Ireland and the UK competing in the series.
The championship will again be open to all classes and use the Motorsport Ireland class structure with additional classes for the Historic Competitors.
The organisers are delighted to welcome back the same 5 rounds as last year, with an additional round for the historic competitors. Opening the championship over the St Patrick Bank Holiday weekend was the West Cork Rally, a favourite with competitors and spectators alike. Round 2, the Rally of the Lakes saw Denis Cronin extendhis lead in the Championship. Last year, the Raven’s Rock Rally joined the championship, and Ann Fitzgerald and all in Carrick-on-Suir Motorclub will host the 3rd round again in 2005. The 4th round is Cork 20, with the Fastnet the final round for the “main field”.
The 023 Tiles Historic Championship has a few changes for 2005. As well as an overall championship for the highest placed historic or post historic car, there will be four new classes,
- up to 1650cc historic
- over 1650cc historic
- up to 1650cc post historic
- over 1650cc post historic
The Historic cars will also compete on an extra round, the Killarney Historic Stages Rally in December.
The 023 Tiles Southern 4 Historic Championship will be run in association with the Irish Historic and Classic Car Association (IHCCA).
Winning the West Cork Rally and maximun points on the Lakes has put Denis Cronin & Helen Sullivan at the top of the standings, with the latest Group N sensations the Kelleher Brothers in second. Last year’s winning co-driver Jakes Kelly retired on the opening round but picked up valuable points on the 2nd round with Tony Davies. Last year he was in a similar position but still went on to win the championship.
Leading 2wd is the Darrian T90 GTR of John Dalton & Gwynfor Jones, just ahead of Phil Collins who are giving this round a miss. Leading the 1600 category is the Killarney crew of Bob Moran and Roland Riordan.
The Historic Section is being lead by the Porsche 911 of Todd Falvey/Dan Barry with
Denis & Dan Moynihan 2nd & John O`Toole/Adrian Wright in 3rd, both in Mk I Escorts.

It’s the intention of the Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club to run the Ravens Rock
Rally from Waterford and Kilkenny in alternative years. Unfortunatly the
Rod Stewart concert has caused this plan to be shelved, and the south
Kilkenny region will rock to the bop of the some of the most expensive rally
machinery in Ireland and England.
Fortunately the Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club can call on its most experienced
Stage commanders and stage crews to enable the 2005 event to run at its
usual high standards, and with the resources of the clubs stalwarts has put
plan B into immediate operation.
The change of venue, a new time schedule and logistics of telescoping ten
months work into six weeks will surely challenge the resources of the
Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club but they are expected to rise to the occasion.
Competitors, sponsors and media personnel are advised to make alternative
accommodation arrangements with the Ard Ri hotel, Waterford (Rally HQ) Tel:

Waterford/Kilkenny tourism to assist with their requirements. The
Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club resources that are usually available to
competitors with accommodation request are being redeployed to enable the
Ravens Rock rally run to its usual high standards.
In a sense, what could have been Kilkennys’ loss is now Waterfords’ gain.
But the pulling power of Rod Stewart, to Kilkenny, means that the South East
region is guaranteed a bonanza weekend.
Despite the change of venue the Carrick-on-Suir Motor Clubs Ravens Rock
Rally enjoy the continued support of it sponsors, Suirway Fork lifts, The

The Ravens Rock Rally enjoys the reputation as the Irish one day
International rally, high praise indeed. The entry will attract crews from
all counties of Ireland and a healthy number of Welsh and British crews.

Ford Focus WRC has high hopes of maintaining his lead in this years Dunlop
National tarmac Rally Championship. Being so close to home ground will put
extra pressure on this very competitive crew but their experience so far
this year will stand them in good stead.
The Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club is dependent on the goodwill of the residents
and landowners on the special stages and hope that the friendships and
arrangements of previous years will prevail and recognise the plight of the
club and rally round them in their hour of need.
The sponsors and supporters of the Ravens Rock rally in Kilkenny have
acknowledged the plight of the Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club and are very
disappointed that the Ravens Rock rally, its competitors and supporters are
unable to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Kilkenny. Discussions are underway
with the concert promoters in Kilkenny to ensure that the events will not
clash again in future years. Better timing would have ensured that there
would have been two ‘good business’ weekends in Kilkenny.
