This weekend sees the beginning of Ollie O’ Donovan’s assault on the Dutch Open Championship with the Zuiderzee Rally based in Emmeloord, north of Amsterdam. The 18 stage 480km event begins on Friday night at 21.46 with 5 stages in darkness finishing shortly after midnight. The crews then tackle the remaining 13 stages Saturday beginning at 10am and finishing at 23.15.

Dutch expert and reigning national champion Jan de Winkle in his newly acquired Super 1600 Clio heads the entry list followed by Eric Weavers the ex Johnny Milner Corolla WRC now upgraded to equal spec to that of Weaver’s old car now in the hands of Eugene Donnelly. Number 3 is Peter Bijvelds in a GPA Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VII who led the final round of the 2003 Championship (the Golden Tulip Rally) before suffering engine failure. At number 4 are the Irish hopefuls Ollie O’ Donovan & David Moynihan.in the McKinstry Motorsport prepared, Kumho shod Subaru WRC. Despite only four events in left hand drive Ollie is confident he can acclimatise to the difficult Dutch terrain but the most important objective this weekend will be to secure a finish and start the championship on the right foot. With only two passes per stage permitted for recce and strict time limits on which to complete it, this first event will be a learning curve. This year sees some added support from xavsmodels.com, Competition Car Insurance and Pacenotes.
