Following a demanding 90 mile route with some intricate plot and bash instructions, they were 16 marks clear of the Golf of novice husband and wife pairing Dessie and Kathleen Brady, who had a tremendous run, with third place going to the Mazda 323 of Ger Gowen and Paul Phelan, the highest placed of the National title contenders. Defending champions Andy Mackarel/Liam Higgins were fifth after getting bogged down for the second event in succession, while points leaders Ray and Stephen O’Neill had various problems and were sixth. Derek Coleman’s regular navigator Conor Maguire was unable to compete, and he teamed up with local man Pat Higgins, Liam’s brother, but a broken wishbone on the Astra forced retirement.
