Irish rally driver, Shaun Gallagher continued his outstanding run of good form when he won the opening round of the British Peugeot 206 Super Cup, the Border Counties rally, this weekend. The rally was based in the town of Jedburgh with six stages totalling 45 miles run in the famous forest of Kielder.

The crews awoke to a bright sunny morning but these conditions made the stages dusty and so reduced visibility. The first stage was cancelled and on stage two Shaun and co driver Richard Pashley were caught napping and lost 10 seconds to rally leader, local driver, Chris Moore. Shaun also had difficulty adjusting to the organisers pace notes and the gravel surface following a winter of snow and ice rallying in Norway.

On stages 3 and 4 Shaun upped his pace clawing back some of the time he had lost previous and was lying 3rd with just two stages to go. The crew set blistering times on stages 5 and 6, taking overall victory by a clear six seconds with Richard Sykes 2nd and Joan Roca 3rd.

“I am delighted with the result, this is my first rally on gravel since November and I will admit that it took a little getting used to but I knew that once I adjusted back that my pace would come and it did!” commented Shaun.

Shaun is now leading two championships, the British 206 Super Cup and his class in the Norwegian National Championship.
