Victory in the Midland Navigation Trial, which finished at Athlone early on Sunday, was enough to clinch the Motorsport Ireland National Navigation Championship for the Monaghan/Cavan pairing of Andy Mackarel and Liam Higgins in their Ascona.
After a tricky 120 mile route in Co Roscommon, they had four marks to spare over local crew Gerry Kelly and Richie Howard, but there was disappointment for the O’Neill brothers, Ray and Stephen, who led the championship points table before the start.

They shared the lead at the halfway halt, but dropped time on a section through bog roads and fell to fifth place at the finish, leaving them too far behind to challenge for the title in next month’s final round.
