Gerry Keyes from Crecora, Co. Limerick secured his fourth consecutive victory on the fourth round of the 2002 Ford Ireland KA Rally Championship, at the action packed Ravens Rock Rally.
Irelands Sunny Southeast lost its shine, throwing up the worst weather Ireland has to offer including heavy rain and extremely cold conditions. This adverse weather coupled with eight slippery stages due to silage harvesting proved to be an extreme test for both the crews and the Ford KA’s.Posted: July 1, 2002 10:13 PM
James Eivers from Blarney once again showed his brilliance in slippery wet conditions to set the early pace and take a thirty six second lead by the first service of the day. Gerry Keyes in the O’Dwyer Steel/P J Matthews/ Lyons of Limerick Ford KA driving with his Championship Title hopes in mind settled into a secure second position from Kenneth Mulvaney in the Henderson Motors Ford KA. The second and final loop of stages proved to be decisive as Eivers broke a driveshaft on Special Stage five handing the lead to Keyes. Once in the lead Gerry drove brilliantly to secure his fourth consecutive victory despite extreme pressure from second placed Kenneth Mulvaney (Sligo) and third placed David Lyons (Limerick).
"James Eivers drove extremely well today, I was not able to catch him. Conditions today were absolutely treacherous and as a result there has been an awful lot of accidents. I was careful not to throw it all away. The Pirelli Tyre Technicians have been very helpful this year and this has helped us all enormously. The stages were very slippery with a lot of muck on the stage, however my Ford KA was amazing, the conditions really suited it and I think the result speaks for itself," said Gerry at the finish.
