The Circuit of Munster with eight fast flowing Special Stages based in West Limerick proved to be supreme test of man and machine. With the first two stages cancelled due to accidents, the third stage underlined the competitiveness of the 2002 Ford Ireland KA Rally Championship with Gerry Keyes, Mark Kane (Tullamore) and David Lyons (Limerick) stopping the clocks on exactly the same time of five minutes and seven seconds.

On Stage Two, David Lyons set the pace recording fastest KA Stage time to take the lead from Mark Kane by just five seconds. Gerry Keyes in the O’Dwyer was delayed on the stage when he encountered another competitor reversing against him on a live stage, the resulting time loss dropped him to third.

Mark Kane attacked Stage five in an attempt to wrestle the lead from Lyons, however he was caught out on a series of jumps which catapulted his Ford KA into the scenery. Keyes fought back magnificently to set the next three fastest KA stage times. Going into the eight and final stage of the day, Keyes was only ten seconds in arrears to Lyons. The battle was going down to the wire. Keyes completed the final stage of the day. However there was a sting in the tail for Lyons, another competitor had crashed blocking the stage, Lyons arrived upon the scene of the accident dropping valuable time and handed the lead to Keyes, his third of the year.

Kenneth Mulvaney (Sligo) got his Championship title hopes back on track to score a well deserved third place overall, setting one fastest KA Stage time along they way.

The next round of the 2002 Ford Ireland KA Rally Championship sees the Ford KA army head to Waterford for the Ravens Rock Rally on the 30th of June.
