The Mondello Park Rallysprint event was mixed surface event with both of loose gravel and tarmac surfaces. The 2001 Ford Ireland KA Challenge once again provided the closest action of the day with only split seconds seperating most of the 13 crews all day.
However it was John Carroll in the Barry Pender Motors Ford KA who was in dominant form, setting fastest times on all of the four timed runs. Barry Barrable in the Plaza Hotel Ford KA was his nearest challenger setting respectable times but was never in position to really challenge John Carroll. The main battle was for third place initially held by Trevor Harding from Cashel, however a spin on the third run allowed Liam Denning to gain a position. On the fourth and final run of the day Gerry Keyes in the Lyons of Limerick. J Matthews Ford KA set a blistering time in the wet to take third place from Denning by only 11 hundredths of a second!
“The competition to date has been very intense, the nature of the events have been a supreme test of man and machine which the Ford KA has met with real substance driveability and of course style” said Liam O’Callaghan, Championship Manager.
“On each rally so far a new name has topped the time sheets on each occasion, so I think we will see some new faces on the podium in Clonmel” said Declan F Foley, Ford KA Brand Manager.
