Galway Motor Club have decided to cancel the Galway Summer Rally scheduled to take place on the 2nd of September, due to the ongoing “Foot and Mouth” crisis.

Traditionally this event attracts a large number of competitors and spectators from the North of Ireland, which is still not free from FMD. Therefore the committee of GMC decided that no matter how small the risk of FMD travelling south with the rally, it was not worth taking any risk whatsoever. The event will be rescheduled to run on its traditional date on the first weekend in September 2002.
Brid Rodgers, the north’s agriculture minister stated recently that it might be the middle of August before the North is declared free of foot and mouth disease. If this turns out to be the case, it may be too late to run the Galway International Rally due to take place in early November. It should be stressed that the GMC committee have made no decision on this as yet.
