Clerk of the Course Declan Mc Cay said that following discussions with the local farmers on the course, at the week-end, the decision was taken that the 2001 Hillclimb cannot proceed for this year.

“We have been monitoring the situation closely but believe that the venue at Dungiven is too close to the rural community, and we are mindful that the farming community at Benbradagh and district, who have always been very supportive of the event. We do not want to run any event that poses a serious risk to them.”

“I am disappointed at having to make this announcement but the members of the Maiden City Motor Club are fully behind it. Limavady Borough Council who have been associated with the event for a number of years now, are concerned for the residents and stock in their area, and the Council’s support and understanding in these circumstances, is very much appreciated.”

“The Hillclimb is an important tourist and sporting event in the area, bringing visitors to the locality at an important time of the year. The event will not now be run until May 2002, when it will be safe to do so.”

“The postponement of the Hillclimb at this time is but a small step in view of the situation facing the country at large. Right now our thoughts are with the farming community and all those affected by the foot and mouth crisis.”
