Round 1 - 2001 Southern 5 Championship
Following an intensive series of meetings between the Cork MC and the
Dept. of Agriculture, various farming organisations, individual farmers
and Motorsport Ireland,it has been decided in the best interests of all
concerned to cancel the running of the 201 irishmobiles.com West Cork
Rally.
"The Club has had a close and good relationship with the people of
Clonakilty for nearly 25 years", said the Clerk of the Course, Brian
O’Connell" and we would not do anything to jeopardise that. After all
rallying is our hobby, but we would not allow it to endanger farmers
livelihoods".

Mr. Bernard O’Donovan of the West Cork IFA welcomed the decision of the club. Mr. Cecil Sparks, the Chairman of the Motorsport Commission of Motorsport Ireland also welcomed the decision and thanked the Club for making "a brave decision and showing a good example".
Mr. John O’Rahilly, Town Clerk of Clonakilty said, " Despite it being a significant loss of possibly £1million or more to the West Cork economy this decision had to be taken to ensure the long term viability of the event."
The Club is looking forward to the 2002 West Cork Rally and looks forward to seeing the people of Clonakilty and competitors alike.
