In association with Motorsport Ireland, the governing body for motorsport, ‘The Alfa Romeo Awards for Excellence in Irish Motorsport’ is intended as an annual awards ceremony to recognise the best competitors in various fields of motorsport. The ceremony will be a glittering lunch where the most important and most prestigious trophies in the sport will be presented. The first of these annual events, to recognise achievement during the 2000 season, is planned for Dublin in late November.

The awards to be presented will include

  • Dunlop Driver of the Year
  • Young Rally Driver of the Year
  • Young Racing Driver of the Year
  • International Competitor of the Year
  • Dunlop National Rally Championship Award
  • and a new ‘Hall of Fame’ award where the recipient is voted for by a panel of motorsports journalists.

Announcing the sponsorship, Paddy Corcoran, Managing Director of Alfa Romeo in Ireland said that the new initiative came at an especially appropriate time for the sport and for his company. ‘It is not only the 90th Anniversary of the founding of Alfa Romeo but it is also the year of the Alfa Romeo Cuore Sportivo exhibition where we saw cars associated with Nuvolari, with Enzo Ferrari and with Fangio. Indeed we saw Michael Schumacher there too, to pay his respects to great cars and great drivers. The Alfa Romeo Awards for Excellence in Irish Motorsports may help a young Irish driver achieve the sort of results those other legendary figures are remembered for.’ he said.

He added that Motorsport Ireland was to be commended for the vital new approach they had brought to the sport. ‘The appeal of racing and rallying as a spectator sport is very obvious. However is essential to remind every young person that it is even more enjoyable to be a participant. This initiative is one of many designed to encourage more of our young people to participate, here and then on the world stage, to reach their full potential’ he said.
