World Rally Cars Galore by Lousie Condon

Heading the quality field of entrants and bidding for his Cork ‘20’ hat-trick is Ian Greer, in a WRC Corolla, just the second of its kind in the country after Austin McHale’s similar spec Toyota. The entry is provisional, pending delivery of the car, which is currently being re-build by TTE in Cologne, including some new development parts.

Andrew Nesbitt, having tied up the Championship in the Isle of Man, returns to home ground to be crowned “King of the Road” in the Cuisine de France backed Subaru Impreza WRC, which is the latest customer spec. machine available.

WRC spec. entries are further swelled by Tipperaryman Frank Meagher’s new M-Sport Ford Focus WRC. This was a test car for Colin McRae & Tomas Radstrom and has been rallied by Sohlberg. It has been rebuilt by M-Sport.

Cork “20” International Rally will take place in the Mitchelstown and Millstreet/Macroom areas on Saturday Oct. 7 and Sunday Oct. 8 respectively.

Countdown to the Cork ‘20’ International Rally
by Louise Condon

On the weekend of October 6-8, Cork will see an invasion of top class international & national rally drivers together with high-tech machinery, including a number of World Rally Cars, for the final event in the 2000 Toshiba Computers Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, Cork ‘20’ International Rally.

The Cork ‘20’ Organising Committee is again led by Alan Verso, Clerk of the Course, and the preparations are going according to plan. “The route consists of approx. 200 competitive miles, with 4 stages run twice in North Cork on Saturday and in the Millstreet/Macroom area on Sunday. The stages will be a mix of sections used previously and new segments, which will offer an exciting challenge for all classes of driver in the main and historic events,” confirmed Alan. There will be centralised service areas at Mitchelstown on Saturday and in the Green Glens Equestrian Centre in Millstreet on Sunday, providing unconstrained access for drivers, service crews, media personnel and supporters.

The Cork ‘20’ is the most prestigious event on the Munster Motor Cycle & Car Club’s sporting calendar. Frank O’Mahony, President of the M.M.C.&C. Club, stated “This year’s Cork ‘20’ has the makings of the most exciting event of the year, given the probability of the Championship going to the wire. The standard of rallying this year is awesome with the WRC machinery, top class competitors and new guys coming through at both international and national level and of course, the ever-increasing numbers of spectators. The club scene is very strong at present, which augurs well for the future of rallying in Ireland.”

Along with Toshiba Computers, we are delighted to have the support of Cork County Council, Aer Rianta Cork, National Vehicle Deliveries and Rochestown Park Hotel (Rally Headquarters), whose continued sponsorship is greatly appreciated.

Regulations will be available early August.
