Donegal native, Eugene Ferry, led 130 cars away from Westport at the start of the Castlecourt Hotel Mayo Single Stage Rally and maintained that position over the three Special Stages held around the Partry Mountains. The Escort MKII driver with John Gallagher alongside recorded the fastest time of the day in 9.06, not once but on two occasions. While Ferry cruised to victory, a tremendous battle ensued for the 2nd and 3rd. Cavan brothers Tom and Kevin McGovern were second after the first run in their Escort but Gordon Rogers and Philip McEntee (Escort) equalled their overall time on the second run after setting a blistering pace of 9.07 over the 10.4 mile tight and twisty route, once used in the Circuit of Ireland.

The 206 Super Cup, the most exciting one-make rally series in the UK, is delighted to announce a fantastic calendar for its 2002 programme.

The Cup will follow most of the events in the revised British Rally Championship, tackling classic stages from England to Wales, Scotland to Ireland, as well as incorporating one of the BTRDA rounds, the Quinton Rally in mid-Wales. In addition, it will include the now traditional trip across the Channel, to contend a round of the French National Championship, competing against their Gallic 206 counterparts. Rounding off the championship will see a promotional event, similar to the Banbury Rally which ran in 2001, with the details still to be confirmed.

WEXFORD MOTOR CLUB STATEMENT - Re: Death of Joe Stafford
Posted: December 17, 2001 12:41 PM - 7961 Hits

The South-East's rallying fraternity was stunned by the death of Joe Stafford shortly after the finish of the Wexford Single Stage Rally on Sunday.

Joe, a member of Wexford Motor Club and who had been co-driver for Mick Kehoe during the event, took ill on the return journey to Rally Headquarters in Rosslare from the end of the final stage in Newbawn.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, who were on the scene immediately, they were unable to resuscitate Mr Stafford.
He was removed to Wexford General Hospital. Joe, 45, a native of Gusserane, is survived by his parents and family.

As a mark of respect, the celebratory prize-giving ceremony due for Sunday night was postponed to a later date.

Wexford Motor Club extends deepest sympathy to Joe's family and wide circle of friends.

HURSON'S THE PERSON AS THE REST ARE LEFT CURSIN'
By William Downing and John Dier

The timing may have been different, the format may have been shorter, the weather may have been bitingly cold, and the road conditions may have been slippery.

Did any of this detract from the 2001 Crosbie Cedar’s Hotel Wexford Rally? Not a bit of it.

Though run on a single stage format two months later than usual, that same old Wexford atmosphere was to the fore on Saturday, with thousands witnessing Peadar Hurson’s first ever Wexford Rally victory.

    From www.motorsportireland.com

The Motorsport Commission (Ruling Council) of Motorsport Ireland met on 20th September to consider the implications of the continuing Foot & Mouth crisis within the UK and what measures motorsport can take to ensure that all possible preventative measures can be put in place to assist in the running of events.

In this regard it was agreed that for the remainder of this year, events run on the public road must have in place such controls as to make it impossible for anyone to be present without first having gone through a process involving the disinfecting of both the person and the vehicle in which they are travelling or competing.
