The 60’s are guilty of introducing the world to many things, but Motorsport in it’s present format is just one of the fonder memories we have from that period. In terms of rallying, and other necessary items, it will always be known as the “Mini” era. The achievements of the BMC Competitions department in the early sixties with John Cooper’s incarnation of Alec Issigonis’s iconic creation live to this day, and from a purely Irish perspective the “David and Goliath” acts of Paddy Hopkirk in his Cooper S, which gave him victory in the most famous rally in the world – the Monte Carlo rally in 1964, inspired a lot of motorsport enthusiasts to pool their interests here at home and form Motor Clubs across the Country.

Irish Motorsport honoured its top performers for 2004 at a celebration lunch held in Dublin earlier today (Tuesday, 30th November, 2004). The “ Awards for Excellence in Irish Motorsport” event which brought together the leading performers from all disciplines in Irish motorsport was created by the sport’s governing body Motorsport Ireland and sponsored by Alfa Romeo.

Photo: James Burke On Friday night last almost 300 guests gathered in the Hotel Kilmore , Cavan to celebrate yet another successful Border Rally Championship year , and to present the worthy award winners with their Cavan Crystal Trophies. Lifting the 2004 Overall Driver Award on the night was Niall Maguire in accumulated maximum score of 40 points for four class eight wins , mirrored by fellow crew member Paul Mc Loughlin who lifted the Navigator title.
