PRESS STATEMENT - Wexford Motor Club

Today, 14th September 2002, during the running of a stage of the Wexford
Stages Rally a competing car was involved in an accident near
Ballycullane, Co. Wexford. A number of spectators were injured and were
taken to Wexford General Hospital.
They are currently in the hospital and are receiving medical attention.
It has been confirmed by the hospital that none of the injuries are life
threatening.
A full investigation is now underway and the result of this investigation
will be available for consideration by the Motor Sport Commission (Ruling
Council) at their meeting on Thursday 19th September 2002.

Byrnes - King of the Hills .. Again!

Having missed out on receiving the Frank Keane Perpetual Trophy after winning the Motorsport Ireland Hillclimb/Sprint Challenge last year, Galway man Frank Byrnes was more determined than ever to get his hands on the prestigious trophy this season. In his 2.0 litre Oliver Walsh Motors (Hyundai) backed Formula Opel Reynard, consistent performances with eight wins and four second places put him at the top of the leaderboard at each event and in return helped to secure the title with two rounds to go.

Ulster Rally - Ford Focus Championship

O'REILLY SCORES MAIDEN VICTORY.
Cathal O'Reilly from Cavan has won the
second round of the 2002 Ford Ireland Focus Rally Championship, the
Ulster Rally based in Belfast.
The two-day Ulster Rally based in the Antrim Hills and Sperrin Mountain
ranges saw the crews tackle in excess of ninety of the harshest stage
miles that some of the crews have ever experienced. The event started as
the opening round had finished, with a gigantic nip and tuck battle
between Cathal O^ÒReilly, Oliver Stanley (Durrow) and Colm Murphy
(Limerick).

Donegal's "Golden Mile" Hillclimb set for September!!

Donegal Motor Club has just announced brief details of it's Inishowen based
National Championship Hillclimb at Glentogher, a few miles from Carndonagh,
in Inishowen.
Clerk of the Course for the event, Declan Mc Cay announced details for the
week-end of 7th & 8th of September.

Seamus steers Seamless Aluminium machine to Manx.
The Seamless Aluminium Subaru Impreza GpN heads for the Isle of Man this
week for the 5th round of the Tarmac Championship, the Manx International
Rally. The driver Seamus Leonard is full of confidence that he will have
a change of fortune in his Tarmac Championship campaign, where he
currently lies fourth in GpN in the Ballyshannon company Seamless
Aluminium backed machine.

Austin McHale took a confidence-boosting third place in the World Rally Experience at Punchestown Racecourse last Sunday in a one-off fun day event, which saw a 12,000 strong crowd watch former World Rally Champion, Colin McRae, win the event.

Biggerstaff rules St. Columb's Park O.K.
Denis Biggerstaff and his Metro 6R4 did the double in Derry to-day, and won
both the main 5 stage Lark in the Park and the Super Shoot out after the
main event.
In an thrilling nail biter of a rally, the top 6 drivers swapped times all
day, with fractions of a second separating more than 4 of the contenders
throughout the whole day.

Natalie out for the craic in Punchestown

The emphasis will be very much on having fun this Sunday (21 July), when Natalie Barratt contests the Punchestown Rally Experience in a Motor Sports Development-run Hyundai Accent WRC².
It will be the first time a Hyundai Accent WRC has competed in Ireland, and it is the same Michelin-shod car that Natalie drove on the Acropolis Rally in Greece recently. This time it will be prepared to full works asphalt specification, ideal for the Punchestown Racecourse venue in Naas, County Kildare, just outside Dublin, which hosts the event.

Scot leading the Championship in 206 Super Cup

The 206 Super Cup heads back to Scotland, for the only mainland closed roads rally in Britain, the Jim Clark Memorial Rally. With a headquarters, promotional start and the event formalities all based in Edinburgh, the event will have a high profile start and finish, while the competitive element, the special stages, are based in the hills around Duns and Berwick.
