First Scottish Motor Sport Show a success
Thousands flock to Lanark.

The first ever Scottish Motor Sport Show has been judged a success after and estimated 15,000 fans flocked to Lanark Agricultural Centre over the weekend of 24-25th February.

The show – brainchild of Scottish motorcycle legend Robbie Allan, who at 65 started the year by competing in the gruelling Dakar Rally – combined the best of motorsport on both two and four wheels.

Stars of motorsport mixed with static displays of cars and bikes from the past and present, with two live action areas to entertain the crowds.

Jimmy, Colin and Alister McRae were in action on the Alister McRae Rally Experience where they took competition winners for a spin on a rally stage which has been built especially for the show. Colin McRae also wowed the crowds by demonstrating a high speed lightweight Rage Buggy.

The Fast and Modified Live Arena featured world-ranked Trials rider Steve Colley and Russ Swift’s car display team, Swift being the man behind the world famous Austin Montego adverts of the 1980s.

Renault’s latest Formula One car livery was on show as well as former Scottish F1 driver and sportscar star Allan McNish and his Le Mans Audi R8, McNish taking time out from a busy season ahead to sign autographs.

Eight-time Isle of Man TT winner and lap record setter Jim Moodie was there as well as the LCC Trials including Scottish Ultimate Champion Gary MacDonald.

Matthew Wilson, son of rally legend Malcolm Wilson and Britain’s only full time driver in the World Rally Championship, was in action on the rally stage he came to the show fresh from last weekend’s Rally Norway.

Wilson competed in a Quad bike race against the likes of British Rally Champion Mark Higgins, Alister McRae, John Crawford and Robbie Head. The public could go head to head against Matt too, but on computer game rather than in the real thing!

Young motorcycle stunt sensations Jonathan Pearson and Sean Vukovic wowed the crowds by jumping a moving Eddie Stobart lorry on both days, whilst Robbie Allan himself had the bike and support lorry from his recent foray on the Dakar.

A particular attraction was the 4x4 experience with V8 powered monsters tackling the course. However, World Rally Radio star Colin Clark had one of the best experiences of the weekend, by having to commentate on Colin McRae driving a Metro 6R4 when sat beside the rally star. To say the crowd found Clark’s reaction to McRae’s driving amusing was something of an understatement.

“I am proud that the first ever Scottish Motor Sport Show was a success and entertained so many people,” said show founder, Robbie Allan. “We wanted to offer fans something they couldn’t see elsewhere and we achieved that. Now we’ll have to start planning for next year!”

Matthew Wilson to attend Scottish Motor Sport Show

Britain’s youngest full time World Rally Championship driver, Matthew Wilson, is the latest star to be confirmed for the Scottish Motor Sport Show which will take place at Lanark Agricultural Centre on February 24-25.

The Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team driver – the youngest person to score a point in the WRC drivers’ championship and win a World Rally Championship stage – will take time out from his busy season, and he will be driving the same Ford Focus RS WRC 06 that he is rallying around the world this year.

“I’m really looking forward to bringing the Focus to Scotland,” says Wilson. “There are not many times that I get to drive the car when not at an event so it will be a real treat for all the Scottish rally fans.”

Wilson’s attendance at the show fits into his busy WRC season which started in January with Rally Monte Carlo and runs until December’s Wales Rally GB. He will come to the show having contested Rally Norway the weekend before.

“It’s a long and busy season, but when an opportunity like the Scottish Motor Sport Show comes up it’s something you don’t want to miss. I was really impressed when I saw the list of people attending, it should be a fun weekend for everyone,” he says.

The Focus RS WRC 06 will be used by Wilson on the purpose-built rally stage, just one of the cars which will be in action over the two days.

Barry Clark to attend Scottish Motor Sport Show
Reigning FIA Junior World Rally Championship Rookie Champion Barry Clark is the latest driver to be confirmed at the Scottish Motor Sport Show, which takes place at Lanark Agricultural Centre on February 24-25.

Clark, 25 from Ellon, Aberdeen, won his title against stiff competition driving for the Stobart VK Rally Team and in 2007 will once again be tackling the seven round Fiesta SportingTrophy International, which pitches identical Ford Fiesta ST rally cars against each other on World Rally Championship events.

"It’s a real pleasure to come to a show like this in Scotland and I hope it becomes a permanent fixture on the calendar," says Clark.

It’s not just the driver either, as the title winning Fiesta ST will also be there, in action on the purpose-built rally stage.

“It will be good to get to drive the car in front of so many fans who wouldn’t otherwise get to see it in action, it really is a cracking little car,” says Clark.

As well as the driver, Clark will also have his motorsport preparation company, Clark Motorsport, displaying at the show.

“Rallying doesn’t come cheap so I’m always hard at work building and preparing rally cars for other people,” he says. “Rally competitors and fans are certainly most welcome to come and see me on the stand.”

Tickets for the show are priced at £12 for adults, £10 for OAPs, whilst children under 12 will be able to go free when accompanied by an adult. Advance tickets are available from the show's website – www.scottishmotorsportshow.co.uk and from the ticket line 0871 424 4444.

Interest in the Scottish Motor Sport Show since its launch has been phenomenal and it offers enough to satisfy the appetite of the hungriest motor sport enthusiast with memorabilia, accessories and clothing all on sale.

Drifting sensation joins Scottish Motor Sport Show
The motor sport sensation that is Drifting will be in attendance at the inaugural Scottish Motor Sport Show at Lanark Agricultural Centre on February 24-25 2007.

Drifting, a craze that emanated from Japan, involves high powered rear-wheel drive cars being driven in a sustained sideways fashion, and this will happen at the show in a purpose built live action area.

Two of Britain's top Drift competitors from the D1 Grand Prix and the European Drift Championship, Mark Luney and Declan Hicks, will be demonstrating skills in their purpose-modified cars.

Luney has been in Drifting for over six years and his tool of the trade is a highly modified Nissan which kicks out approaching 600hp.

"We're always very well received when we do events in Scotland," says Luney. "My car is the only two-wheel-drive Skyline R32 GTR in Europe and we've done a lot of work on it to make it go sideways."

Lighter weight and rear-wheel-drive only make for a successful Drift machine and Luney has twice finished runner up in the Irish Prodrift championship as well as finishing third in the D1 GP last season.

"I used to do a bit of rallying but that got too expensive so I turned to Drifting about six years ago," he says. "I'm competing all over Europe this year and the Skyline will be in Spain before it's up in Scotland."

Fellow Drift competitor Declan Hicks has a Toyota Soarer GZ-20, one of only four in the UK. "My car is road legal and I'm only one of two competitors who drives their car to the events," says Hicks.

The Soarer kicks out around 500hp and is capable of 175mph when let off the leash. "It's going to be a long drive for me up to Lanark as I'm based in Dorset," says Hicks. "But once I saw the line-up for the show I knew I had to be there."

Colin McRae confirmed at Scottish Motor Sport Show.
Colin McRae, the 1995 World Rally Champion, is the latest star attraction to be confirmed at the Scottish Motor Sport Show at Lanark Agricultural Centre on February 24-25 where he will meet the crowds and perform on both two wheels and four.

McRae, the third most successful rally driver ever in terms of World Rally Championship wins, will join his father Jimmy – a five time British Rally Champion – and brother Alister – the 1995 British Rally Champion – in what will be one of Scotland’s biggest ever motor sport events.

“It’s fantastic that I can join Jimmy and Alister and so many other Scottish motor sport personalities,” said McRae. “It’s going to be a great event for Lanark and for Scottish motor sport.”

McRae will not only be meeting the thousands of expected fans, he will also be behind the wheel of various rally machinery and driving and riding in a head to head competition between competitors from both two and four wheel motor sport disciplines on machinery from both areas.

“There’s going to be a good variety of disciplines and the chance to compete with them on both two wheels and four will make this event unique,” said McRae.

McRae’s most recent WRC outing was in October 2006 when he contested Rally Turkey for the Kronos Citroen WRC Team as a replacement for reigning WRC Champion, Sebastien Loeb. McRae exited the rally from the top ten on the final stage with an alternator problem.

Tickets to the Scottish Motor Sport Show will be priced at £12 per adult, with an OAP concessionary price of £10. Children under 12 get free entry when accompanied by an adult. Call the ticket line on 0871 424 4444 or visit www.scottishmotorsportshow.co.uk to book now.

Lanark gets Moodie
Moodie, eight times Isle of Man TT winner, a lap record holder and a two-time British Supersport Champion, will be in attendance for both days at the show, based in the Lower Clyde Valley, perfectly placed between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

“The Scottish Motor Sport Show is good for Scotland and it’s good for motor sport,” said Moodie. “Having so many attractions will really make this show something special.”

As well as meeting the fans, Moodie will also be in action in a head to head between car and bike stars which will see competitors from both disciplines compete on both types of machinery.

“I’m looking forward to that and will be giving it my all,” said Moodie. “It’s going to be great for the Scottish fans to see.”

Moodie had his leg in a fixed frame for 18 months following a bike accident at the end of 2003. He battled back to full race fitness and has since acted as team manager for Yamaha.

“People thought I’d retired from racing because I was managing a team, but that’s not the case. I’m definitely on the look out for a ride next season,” he confirmed.

Tickets will be priced at £12 per adult, with an OAP concessionary price of £10. Children under 12 get free entry when accompanied by an adult. Call the ticket hotline on 0871 424 4444 or book online at www.scottishmotorsportshow.co.uk.
