205 Challenge Report

The Beautiful Island Of Achill Greeted The I205c Crews On A Warm Dry Day That Promised Some Great Driving And We Were Not To Be Disappointed. Mayo Motor Club Laid On A Excellent 10 Mile Stage That Noel O Donnell/Michael Bonner Would Make Their Own With Fastest Time On Each Pass. Stage One Was Where They Really Made Their Mark By Scorching Through 20 Seconds Up On Tommie Rafferty/John Casey Who Tied On Time With Paul Conlon/Dermot Mc Dermott. So Tight Was The Battle That Martin And James Ewing Were Only 2 Seconds Slower With Barry Mahon/Ollie O Grady 5 Seconds Further Back.

Disaster Would Strick The Winner Of The Previous Round When A Burst Brake Pipe Caused Niall Lynch/Mark Feely To Spin Off Backwards. Also In Trouble At Exactly The Same Place Was Dj Browne/ Torloc O Reilly With Ignition Trouble.

Such Is The Good Sprint Between Competitors In The Challenge, Browne Sacrficed A Better Stage Time When He Repaired His Car To Tow Lynch Out Of The Ditch He Was Stuck In. Stage 2 Saw O Donnell Fastest By 11 Seconds From Conlon With Rafferty 1 Second Back. Ewing Held Fourth Place From Mahon With Browne And Lynch Both Setting Competitve Times But Way Out Of The Running After Stage Ones Drama. The Final Run Saw O Donnell Turn Up The Heat Once More, Going 11 Seconds Better Than Mahon With Conlon Next 4 Seconds Behind.

Rafferty, Lynch, Ewing, Browne And Challenge New Boys Kerril Waters/Ultan Mc Gowan Were All With 10 Seconds Of Each Other. Noel O Donnell/ Micheal Bonner Were Clear Winners By 56 Seconds From Tommie Rafferty/ John Casey After Conlon Was Given A 2 Minute Road Penalty. Mahon Would Inherate Third Place Just 5 Seconds Down On Rafferty With The Ewing Brothers Fourth And Waters/Mc Gowan A Brillant Fifth On Their First Ever Rally.

Top Three Positions In The Rory Galligan Rally Irish 205 Challenge.

Noel O Donnell...47 Tommie Rafferty...43 Niall Lynch.....42

Michael Bonner Leads From John Casey In The Co Drivers Race.

Next Event For The I205c Is The Cork 2 Day Forest Rally In July

Synan Takes The Honours On Mayo Single Stage Rally
Blink and you may have thought it was the Rally of Corsica or some similarly exotic rally event from the Mediterranean. Achill may be one of the more remote outposts of North Western Europe, but on Sunday as the Mayo Single Stage Rally visited the island, the glorious sunshine combined with spectacular scenery made for compelling viewing, as rally crews from all over the country battled it out for victory

Clerk of the Course Declan Lavelle and his team from Mayo & District Motorsport Club had laid on a challenging 16km test which was run three times. The stage passed through the village of Dooega and over the beautiful Atlantic Drive, and it certainly caught the imagination of competitors, with a near maximum number of 127 rally cars starting the event.

After a hard day’s action, Ed Synan and Kieran Cusack brought their Ford Escort back to Rally HQ at the Ostan Oilean Acla in Achill Sound on Sunday evening having taken what was a relatively comfortable victory on this Mayo Single Stage Rally. Quickest or joint quickest on every stage, the Limerick crew saw off the best that the opposition could throw at them to take the victory champagne on a beautiful summers evening on Achill island. Nearest challenger was Guilford’s Martin Taggart ably assisted on the day by local co-driver John Rowland from Crossmolina, the pair finishing 10 seconds behind Synan.

One of the drives of the day came from the O’Rourke brothers, Thomas and John. Driving an front wheel drive Opel Astra which would normally be expected to be outpaced in this company, the Wexford crew recorded joint fastest time on the last stage to finish third, missing out on second overall by a mere one second. Sean Murphy and Claire Hegarty were fourth with Thomas and Kevin McGovern recording a fine fifth. Eddie Power was another to avail of the expertise of a local co-driver, John Higgins guiding the Waterford man to 5th in the fabulous sounding Clio. After a disappointing couple of stages early on when they complained of a down on power car, the last run saw Gerry Smith and Charles Adams rediscover the form which saw Gerry take victory on the last Mayo Single Stage Rally in 2003 to move up the leaderboard to 7th overall.

In the classes, Danny Cannon / Ian Campbell took class 1 while John Hegarty / Patrick McGlynn took the spoils in class 2 as well as finishing 9th overall. Tom Curley / Paul Horan were victorious in class 3, and Eamonn and Dermot McCafferty took class 5. In class 6 Eddie Power / John Higgins took the honours, while Brian Pat Doherty / Michael O’Kane took class 7. Jason Currid and Sandra Clarke won class 9, Enda McLoughlin / Alan Gibbons won class 10, Martin & John Cunningham took class 11, Gerry Smith and Charles Adams were first in class 12 and Sean Murphy and Claire Hegarty took the honours in class 13.
