Initiatives to recruit and reward motorsport marshals have helped secure a prestigious national award for local man Plunkett Boyle. Plunkett, from Donaghmore Co Tyrone, has become the first Northern Ireland person to be awarded UK Marshal of the Year by the governing body of motorsport in the UK.

The award is in recognition of work done by the Motorsport Marshalling Partnership, which was set up with many local motor clubs to get more new marshals, reward existing marshals, and promote training to ensure safe motorsport.

Plunkett Boyle said “The UK Marshal of the Year Award was a huge surprise, but I am delighted and extremely proud that the work done with marshals here locally has been recognised. There has been a lot of work put into the scheme by many of the local motor clubs, not to mention the help and support from 2&4 Wheels. We have been able to recruit new marshals, and reward existing marshals. Already, over 50 marshals have earned a free day at rally schools, and over 150 marshals have had subsidised days karting and 4x4 driving. Indeed we are soon about to give out the top prizes for this year, which will see 3 marshals get an all expenses trip to a World Rally Championship event in Spain.”
