Kenny McKinstry Wins, Owen Murphy Excels. Kenny McKinstry/ Kenny Hull clinched victory on the “Willie Loughman Memorial” Carrick-on-Suir Forest Rally, the opening round of the “McCauley Trailers” National Forest Rally Championship. However the Banbridge ace and former ANCRO Champion was pushed all the way by an unassuming car no. 25; Cork’s Owen Murphy and his Wexford navigator Gary Nolan took the woods by storm setting three FTD’s amassing a sensational second overall driving a Gp N Evo 5. McKinstry led from the opening stage, Clondonnell where his S8 Impreza WRC was 2 secs clear of John McCarthy’s Corolla WRC. Kevin O’Kane (Impreza WRC) tied with James Murphy (Escort WRC) in third, 7 secs down on McCarthy. Owen Murphy (Gp N, Evo 5) stormed the leader-board to hold fifth, a mere second behind the WRC’s. Stage 2 “Gurteen” was 23 kms long and the toughest of the event. McKinstry again fastest on 13:15. John McCarthy had a spin (13:57). Pat Norris put his Impreza WRC off on ss1 and punctured on ss2 (14:26). Kevin O’Kane was cautious in Gurteen (14:12). James Murphy was on form, third fastest on (13:44). The big surprise was Owen Murphy’s pace second fastest, a staggering 13:28 despite a spin and stall. Trevor Harding was fourth on 13:47 but his Subaru suffered due to fuel starvation. At service after ss2 McKinstry appeared to have it all under control but when word of car no. 25 came through the Banbridge man discovered that victory was going to be well earned. Owen Murphy arrived to service oblivious to his performance. The Cork teenager knew he pushed hard but had no idea he was holding 2nd overall, his aging Lancer trailed McKinstry’s state of the art WRC by 23 secs. James Murphy held held third, 15 secs off his namesake. Harding held 4th, 5 secs in arrears and John McCarthy completed the top five, his Corolla arriving to service with a broken driveshaft. Frank Kelly (mk2) was inside the top ten but dropped off the leader-board due to a puncture. Brian McGillin lost a minute when a turbo pipe came loose, Adrian Hetherington (mk2) was off for 4 mins and Pete McCullagh put his Evo off the road ending his day. The event moved to the famous “Slievenamon and Anner” stages. Kenny continued to set the pace through ss3 albeit 3 secs up on Owen Murphy who suffered a broken windscreen from catching cars. There was no major drama on Slievenamon all the front-runners reported a clean run. Stage 4, Anner famous for the jumps saw Owen Murphy set fastest time (4:55) 3 secs up on McKinstry (4:58). John McCarthy was second fastest (4:57). James Murphy and Trevor Harding set fourth fastest (4:59). McKinstry arrived to the lunchtime in the lead but had not increased his advantage over Murphy, who remained as before 23 secs adrift. Half a minute back Harding was up to third, McCarthy a second off in fourth, James Murphy 3 secs down in fifth. Stephen Moore held 6th and was enjoying a battle with Lawlor, who was only 4 secs back on his first day with his new mount. The rally returned to Clondonnell and Gurteen for the repeat loop of stages and yet again “Gurteen” was to be make or break for the front-runners. McKinstry’s solid run continued as he edged further ahead, 15 secs up on young Murphy through Clondonnell. Gurteen was the place to attack and Kenny was 12 secs quicker than his first run. Now all eyes were on Owen Murphy to prove his worth. The 19-year old rose to the challenge stopping the clocks 2 secs up on McKinstry taking his second FTD of the day. At the final service with 2 stages remaining (Slievenamon & Anner) McKinstry held a 36 sec margin from Owen Murphy. McCarthy’s Corolla was up to third – 20 secs down. James Murphy fourth despite a broken drvieshaft on Gurteen, Harding slipped to fifth, Moore maintained 6th, Lawlor 7th, Norris 8th after a variety of excursions, McGillin 9th and Eamonn Mimnagh climbed to 10th. Frank Kelly ripped a wheel off on Gurteen, Pete Willoughby’s Evo was sidelined with a broken pulley, Paul Britton (Impreza) crashed out as did Adrian Hetherington. John McCarthy set FTD through stage 7 (Slievenamon), 3 sec up on leader McKinstry and 4 up on Owen Murphy. James Murphy and Stephen Moore tied in fourth with McGillin 2 secs further back followed by Harding. Kenny McKinstry/ Kenny Hull emerged from Anner unscathed taking another Carrick Forest victory after a faultless drive and should be well on form for the Sunseeker Rally next weekend. Owen Murphy/ Gary Nolan tied with James Murphy setting their third FTD on the final stage to clinch a breath-taking second overall. Arriving back at rally HQ without a scratch on his Yokohamma shod Evo 5, Murphy now leads the “McCauley Trailers” National Forest Rally Championship (McKinstry did not register). This is the first time in recent years that a Gp N car has led the Championship. John McCarthy/ MJ Morrissey took third on the day and are very pleased the re-built Corolla. The East Cork man paid tribute to Owen Murphy’s blistering pace. Fourth placed; James Murphy/ Anthony Nestor were delighted with their day. Murphy finally got a clean run with his Escort WRC and set joint FTD on the final stage. Trevor Harding/ Adrian Deasy netted fifth - it’s a mystery how Harding didn’t blow off any bumpers! Stephen Moore/ Tony McHugh took sixth and the Gp N spoils. Moore’s gearlever broke on the start-line of the final stage, he struggled through only able to select 3rd or 4th gears. Brian Lawlor/ Peter Kavanagh had a fine result taking 7th on their first day with the Evo. Brian Keegan is a renowned character among the forest fraternity as he has been Noel Driver’s Mechanic on events for the last 15 years. Brian Lawlor carried a special tribute to Andrew and Glen Keegan on his car, the words read “Guided by Angels Andrew & Glen”. Pat Norris/ Martin Brady had a tough day with their Impreza WRC occasionally taking to the scenery, they finished 8th and will be looking for a bigger result on round 2. Brian McGillin/ David Doherty finished 9th and are determined to have the new Impreza in Mitchelstown. Eamonn Mimnagh/ Kieran McAnespy completed the top ten. Class honours on the day went to Llyod Hutchinson/ Kevin Flanagan (Mini) in class1, James/ Rachel Fagan (mk2) class2, Andrew Purcell/ Adrian Kiely took class 3 honours, 15th overall and were the “Best 2WD” with a 1600 Civic. Malachy Donnelly/ Sean Ferris (mk2) clinched class 4. Mickey McGillin/ Sean Hayde (mk2) took class five as their main opponents retired and Jonny Kenneally/ Ken Carmody (mk2) took the junior honours. Carrick on Suir Motor Club ran an excellent rally, a full capacity entry, perfect weather conditions and a great start to the 2006“McCauley Trailers National Forest Rally Championship”. It is very encouraging to see new names come to the fore across the board and makes for a very competitive season. Well done to CoC, Terence Kearney and his team. Murphy Is Magic. Photo: Ger Leahy After coming second on the last three rounds of the Peugeot Super Cup last year Eoin was hoping to get his car in the top three in Group N however he stunned the rally followers in Carrick-on-Suir . On stage 2 Owen was second fastest to Kenny McKinstry in the Subaru Impreza and was second overall just 13 seconds behind the Subaru WRC. As Owen headed for stage 3 his confidence was building but he was held up by a slower car who would not pull over this and a half spin ment Owen though he had lost lots of time sensationally he was just two down on the old master and former winner McKinstry. At this stage people were telling the young Cork driver to slow down he had proved a point now was the time to consolidate his GpN lead, Owen felt that while going quick he was happy with his pace and would keep it all neat and tidy. Stage 4 was once again where Owen would show last year in the UK forest was well spent he was fastest overall beating McKinstry by 3 seconds and John McCarthy by 2 seconds now people were starting to talk about this young Cork man who was driving like a man possessed on Yokohama Advan tyres asked about the tyres Owen said " those Yokohamas are just fantastic I am getting great grip". Stage 5 saw Owen 6th fastest but on stage 6 he once again topped the time sheets beating the much more powerful WRC cars. It was now time for the last service and the car ran like clockwork all day no problems other then two burst wheels testament to how hard the young charger was going . Stage 7 saw Owen take 3rd quickest which ment going into the last stage Owen was lying second behind Mckinstry 36 seconds back but 19 ahead of John McCarthy in the WRC Corolla, Owen held his nerve on the final stage where he once again set a joint fastest time with James Murphy in his WRC Escort. This ment McKinstry took the lead by a winning margin of 28 seconds At the finish ramp a very happy Owen Murphy said it was a great day a day when everything went almost perfect the car was good those Yokohama Advan tyres gave me great Grip, Gary Nolan was spot on with the notes the event was fantastic well run a credit to the organisers .Co driver Garry Nolan described the day as a "steep learning curve but his best ever day rallying Owen is just a great driver what a day" Owen said special thanks must go to my sponsors Yokohama,o Flynn Construction ,O Brien Crowley accountants , Wolf Race Wheels, Permafrost and everyone who has helped with the car including my service crew who left me to just concentrate on my driving. At the prize giving Kenny McKinstry the 2 time Irish Tarmac Champion was full of praise for the young Cork man and described Owen Murphy as a future rally star. Anyone who was lucky enough to be in the wood today to view such a display of driving know they saw something special it was a great day in the wood a historic day Owen Murphy the Teenager from Ballincollig Cork made history , becoming the first ever teenager to lead the McCauley Trailers National Forest Rally Championship as McKinstry is not registered for the series. 16/02/06 Rally Programmes will be available at the Rally HQ, The Carrick Hotel, Main street, Carrick on Suir, and in local Petrol Stations 14/02/06 The 2006 McCauley Trailers National Forest Rally Championship begins this Sunday February 19th with the annual Carrick-on-Suir based Willie Loughman Memorial Forest Rally. COC, Terence Kearney has formulated a very challenging event: 8 stages, 4 done twice, 90 stage kms including a 23km version of the vast Gurteen Forest complex. The first car leaves parc ferme at 9:30 Sunday morning for the opening stage "Clondonnell", a very testing curtain raiser to the "McCauley Trailers" Championship. Stage 2 takes the competitors through 23 kms of the mammoth Gurteen forest, followed by first service along the main Waterford road outside Clonmel (11:00 approx). After service the event heads north for the Slievenamon and Anner forests. Stage 3 is a classic stage over Slievenamon valley. Stage 4, "Anner" famous for the fast jumps at the end is being run identical to last year. After stage 4 the cars return to service at lunchtime before the repeat run of the opening 2 stages. Final service, mid afternoon is followed by the last loop of stages, Slievenamon and Anner with the first competing cars due back at Rally HQ, The Carrick Hotel at 17:00. The event has a capacity entry with a serious line up across the board. Top seed Kenny McKinstry will use his state of the art "Impreza S9 WRC". The Banbridge Rally preparation expert comes to the Suir Valley as a shakedown for the Sunseeker Rally the following weekend in Bournemouth. McKinstry last appeared in the Carrick forests in '99 where he took an emphatic victory and went on to clinch the British ANCRO series that year. John McCarthy is at 2 with his fully re-built Corolla WRC. McCarthy who won the event three years ago will have local ace Mickey Joe Morrissey on the notes. McCarthy is very competitive by nature and relishes the thought of a race with King Kenny. Rounding off the top three; Pat Norris/ Martin Brady (Impreza WRC) will be anxious for a big result on day one. Norris has set a few FTD's in the Carrick Forests over the years and this could be his day. At number four is one of the most loyal forest championship competitors Tyrone man Kevin O'Kane with his pristine Impreza WRC. O'Kane has been runner-up in recent years and will embark on another championship assault this weekend. James Murphy/ Anthony Nestor complete the top five with their Escort WRC. Murphy certainly has the commitment and is over due a clean run, the Limerick pairing work very well together and could make the podium. Brian McGillin/ David Doherty are first Gp N on the road at number 6 with the very latest Prodrive N12 Impreza. McGillin was well up to speed towards the end of last season but will have to fend off formidable opposition. Reigning Group N Champions Stephen Moore/ Tony McHugh are at 7, Moore will run his ex-Seamus Leonard Impreza N10. Pete Willoughby/ Greg McCarthy will be hot on Moore's heels with the "DJ Rally Hire" Evo 8. Willoughby led the event after the opening stage last year but disappeared in Gurteen. Number 9; Brian Lawlor has switched from his mk2 Escort to the ex-Aaron MacHale Evo 8.5. Lawlor and co driver Peter Kavanagh has had some stunning results with their mk2 Escort regularly mixing it with the WRC's, now in his new mount has set his sights on the GpN title or possibly even the overall title. Rounding off the top ten and definitely one to watch; Waterford's Trevor Harding has secured a budget to run a P2000 Impreza WRC. Despite his flamboyant style Harding has the speed to win, he and co-driver Adrian Deasy will have a busy day in the office! Group N has become the strongest class with almost 20 entries, including Moore, McGillin, Willoughby, Pete McCullagh, Brendan Murphy, Owen Murphy, Stuart Darcy, Kevin Duggan, John Hickey, Patrick Keenan, Gabriel Martin,USA based Patrick Keenan and Emma McKinstry like her Dad using the event as a Sunseeker shakedown.. Frank Kelly/ Liam Brennan are the top 2WD seed and have a new Mountune powered mk2 to defend their 2WD title. Kelly will face stiff opposition from the likes of; John Reid, Adrian Hetherington, Noel Driver, Seamus O'Connell and Mickey McGillin to mention a few all in high-powered Escorts. Others who could feature very high up with un assuming machines are the likes of; Conor Kelly with his rapid 1600 16v Sunny and Llyod Hutchinson returns to the woods with his marvellous Mini. The junior class has been raised up to 1600cc and looks interesting with last year's runner-up Connor Kelly expected to be the benchmark with his Nova. Johnny Kenneally (mk2), Ciaran McCullagh (Nova), Jonathan MacHale (Nova), David Donoghue (205) and David Dunne (mk2) will do battle for the Junior spoils. Following enquiries from a variety of 2WD competitors to split the Championship tables in two - a 2WD "Pilot Championship" will run alongside the main Championship this year. First, second and third overall will be awarded at the end of the championship. Keith,who will be navigated again this year by Anthony O Connell,is seeded at number 35 in an all star entry that sees Kenny McKinstry top the list in a Subaru Impreza S9.Indeed there are no fewer than 6 WRC's in the top ten for this event. He will be contesting the entire McAuley trailers National Forest Rally Championship and selected Tarmac events in his newly acquired Group A Peugeot 206. Testament to Keiths ability is the fact that the nearest car to him in class 7 is seeded at number 66,31 places further back.Last year keith managed a brilliant 2nd overall in the Cork 20 National Rally in a Peugeot 106 losing out only to the ultra powerful Darrian of John Dalton/Gwynfor Jones from Wales and beating many more powerful cars by a very respectable margin.
