Round 5 - 2006 National Rally Championship
Posted: June 2, 2006 12:12 PM
Group N for McElvaney Former Billy Coleman Award winner Eamon McElvaney made his first appearance in his ex Niall McShea/Stephen Moore Subaru Impreza N10 at the Cavan Stages Rally. Not only did Eamon face the challenge of the tight stages but also had to face driving a left hand drive for the first time. It took Eamon the first loop to get settled in his new car. On the second loop of 3 stages Eamon had increased his pace and knocked an amazing 45 seconds off one of his stage times. On the third loop Eamons pace continued to increase however he wasn’t near the pace of the top runners in Group N. With just one stage to go Eamon was forced to retire due to mechanical problems. The next event for Eamon is Monaghan Forestry where we will see how Eamon has mastered the technique of driving the left hand drive Impreza N10. DONNELLY WINS IN CAVAN AS ELLIOTT RETAINS LEAD IN DUNLOP SERIES Report Courtesy of Dunlop, sponsors of the National Rally Championship. Leading from start to finish, Derry's, Eugene Donnelly and co-driver, Paddy Toner in their Toyota Corolla WRC won the Hotel Kilmore Cavan Rally, the fifth round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship. At the end of the nine-stage event, they were 31 seconds ahead of Patrick Elliott/Rory Kennedy (Subaru WRC); Elliott retains his lead in the Dunlop series. For the second event in a row, Dubliner, Aaron MacHale (Ford Focus WRC), who was co-driven by Paul Nagle, finished third. The Group N category was won by Willie Fannin/Mick Courtney (Subaru) and the top two wheel drive exponents were Rodney Wilton/Conor McMahon (Escort). Donnelly made the best start and eked out a two second lead over Elliott with MacHale in third, a further seven seconds in arrears. MacHale set the pace on the second stage (his first ever fastest stage time in a round of the Dunlop series) and Donnelly, just like he did on the opening stage, headed the time sheets on S.S. 3. At the Cavan service halt, that followed the opening loop of three stages, Donnelly led Elliott by nine seconds. The rally leader expressed his concern about the suspension system and remarked that something just didn't seem right with the Toyota Corolla WRC. Meanwhile, second placed Elliott reckoned his performance was a little short of a full assault. MacHale, who was third - three seconds behind Elliott, had an untroubled run. Monaghan winner, Adrian McElvaney (Subaru) held fourth place, he was off the pace on the first stage but was far more impressive on the second and third stages. Former national champion, Niall Maguire had a big overshoot on the second stage, he was fifth overall followed by Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) and Group N leader, Willie Fannin (Subaru). Driving a new N12 Subaru, Fannin clipped a rock on the second stage and the Cavan born driver reckoned the tyre deflated somewhat on the next stage, nevertheless, he was 31 seconds ahead of his showroom rival, Alan Ring, also in a Subaru. Elsewhere, Martin Doherty, backed off after his Subaru clipped a bridge, he was eighth overall in a top ten that also featured the aforementioned Ring and Ian Barrett. Fellow Group N driver, Kevin Kelleher was the first major retirement - his Mitsubishi blew a turbo on the opening stage. Donnelly dominated stages four and five to extend his lead but admitted that his approach to S.S. 6 was a trifle too aggressive as Elliott set the pace. By the conclusion of S.S. 6, Donnelly held a 16 second advantage as Elliott had to withstand the pressure from Aaron MacHale, who drew level with the Cavan driver at the completion of S.S. 5. However, Elliott gained six seconds on S.S. 6 to regain the initiative. McElvaney opined that he couldn't match the pace of his rivals, he held fourth from Maguire, who was only four seconds behind while Martin Doherty (Subaru) moved into seventh. Group N leader, Willie Fannin punctured on S.S. 5, nevertheless, he retained the lead - his main rival, Alan Ring lost time with a puncture on the previous stage. That allowed Ian Barrett move into second in the category and after six stages, he was 22 seconds behind Fannin. Jack Sleator (Subaru WRC) was ninth overall with Barrett in tenth place. On the final loop of three stages, Donnelly consolidated his position and emerged victorious by 31 seconds to clinch his third victory of the Dunlop season. The chase for second went down to the final stage. Aaron MacHale (Ford Focus WRC) reeled in Patrick Elliott (Subaru WRC) on the penultimate stage and led entering the final stage by four seconds. However, Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC) had a slight off road excursion and MacHale lost time and indeed, second place, as he tried to overtake Maguire's Subaru. McElvaney was fourth and Maguire, despite his indiscretion, held on to take fifth ahead of the Subaru WRC's of Kevin Barrett and Martin Doherty. There was late drama in Group N as both Willie Fannin and Alan Ring collected punctures, Fannin on S.S. 8 and Ring on S.S. 9; Fannin's earlier pace was enough to see him through to clinch the category win ahead of Ian Barrett. Jack Sleator (Subaru WRC) completed the top ten. Alan Ring (Subaru) was eleventh while top two-wheel drive competitor, Rodney Wilton (Escort) was an impressive twelfth overall.
