Number 1 seed Kevin Lynch overcame some major brake problems to win the 2005 Tour of the Sperrins by 58 seconds after 40 miles to Corolla ace Glen Allen.
Lynch devastated the opposition on the opening three stages but when Glen adjusted the diffs on the Corolla he kept check on the Impreza in front, equalling but never beating the Dungiven man.

Third spot was taken by the Amazing Jonny McKenna in a GP N Mitsubishi evo 6 who was simply spectacular, overcoming world rally cars and all other GP N opposition for a well deserved result.

Rally sponsor Keiran Shaw missed the podium by twelve seconds driving Brian Mc Closkeys WRC escort, even though he couldn’t reach the peddles for the first half of the rally.

With the help of Sperrin tourism many overseas visitors came to compete notable finishers were Liam Egan from the US driving Eugene Donnelly’s WRC Corolla and Tony Arnsby from Tyne and Wear finishing in eighteenth position.

The hotly contested 2 wheel drive battle was won by Alistair Cochrane and Pam Norris in a ford escort finishing a fantastic fifteenth overall they finished five seconds in front of Seamus O’Connell with Camillus Bradley in third a further thirty six seconds down the leader board.

Other class winners included Christopher Boyce winning class 1, Neil mc Cance came through to win class 2, Stephen Dickson won class 3, class 4 was taken by David Kerr, class 5 seen Barry mc Kenna come through driveshaft problems to take victory. The class 6 battle was epic with only a few seconds separating the first 3 with Drew Stewart eventually taking the honours form Malachy Donnelly by 2 seconds at the finish. Class 7 winner was Alistair Cochrane, with Kieran Shaw winning class 8.

N. Ireland Rally Championship returns to the Sperrins - Event Preview
Round four of the “Pacenotes” N. Ireland rally Championship returns to the Sperrins on 21nd May. All the major contenders will be at the start ramp outside Walsh’s hotel on Saturday morning at 10.00am. An oversubscribed entry has given the organisers the usual headaches, but Clerk of the Course, Philip Shaw, has laid out a fantastic loop of stages in the local forests including the mighty Banagher to entertain both competitors and spectators alike.

With funding from Sperrin Tourism to increase the profile of the event, many entries have been received from the UK, Southern Ireland and the USA.
Number one seed is Dungiven man, Kevin Lynch in his Subaru world rally car with Cookstown’s Glen Allen in his new WRC Toyota Corolla hot on his heels at number two. Raymond Johnston and Denis Biggerstaff in a duo of Subaru world rally cars, run ahead the rally sponsor Kieran Shaw of KBB Doors Ltd, in a Mitsubishi WRC. From the USA Liam Egan will have Sean Moriarty guiding him throughout the event. Top English competitor Michael Glendinning runs at number twenty four. Craig Bennet again brings his fantastic ex-works Ford Focus WRC back to the woods for the first time in 05.

Local drivers Seamus Donnelly, Johnny McKenna and Raymond Mason head the Gp N challenge but will Dungannon’s Stephen Moore or Cookstowns John McGlaughlin head the Gp N battle on Saturday evening? Don’t forget some of the N Ireland forest rounds have been won outright by Gp N cars in the past.

With the fantastic entry of WRC and Gp N cars first two wheel drive car is Alistair Cochrane at thirty one with Camillus Bradley, Frank Kelly, Andy Magee, Seamus O’Connell and Mark Barnett in hot pursuit. Noticeably missing from the entry list is local man Greg McCormick but younger brother Marty has stepped into the hot seat and together with local drivers such as Bernard O’Neill “sheriff” and James “Hairy” Cassidy the two wheel battle promises to be epic.

It’s all adding up to be a fantastic battle in the Sperrins on Saturday 21st. To help you keep up to speed during the day MADMC offer a text message service on Saturday morning at Walsh’s. Program’s with detailed maps of the best vantage points, driver profiles and entry details as well as “Aunty Lag” to keep you amused between the stages are on sale and available on Saturday morning at Walsh’s as well as local filling stations.
