George Tracey scored his third Mondello Park win within two months when his Metro 6R4 led all through the Carlow Christmas Rallysprint, although the Impreza WRCof Kevin Barrett gave him a close battle all the way and was only 1.7 seconds slower when the three runs were added together.

Rally ace Kenny McKinstry took another Impreza to third place, ahead of Brian Murphy’s similar car, with Englishman Mark Watson fifth in a Peugeot ahead of former Tarmac champion Andrew Nesbitt, who shared the winning Metro. The huge seasonal entry saw more than 160 drivers starting the event.
