1. Motorsport Ireland Present Memorial Trophies wards for Michael O'Carroll and Anthony Cross as Motorsport Ireland Present Memorial Trophies Motorsport Ireland, governing body for motor sport in Ireland presented two of its oldest and most prized memorial trophies on Monday evening, 30th April 2001. RTE's Michael O'Carroll, one of the best known figures in Irish motor sport, received the Ivan Webb Memorial Trophy for his contribution to Irish motor sport over almost 50 years. The second award went to a young man starting out on his motor sport career, Anthony Cross, was presented with the Millard Memorial Trophy for the fine start he has made to his motor sport career over the past season. Both men were presented with their trophies by Cecil Sparks, Chairman of the Motorsport Commission at a function held in Motorsport Ireland head quarters on Dawson Street yesterday Monday evening. Michael O'Carroll who in his early years competed in various forms of both car and motorcycle sport including the Circuit of Ireland. He is undoubtedly best known for his journalistic contributions to Irish motor sport over a long and distinguished career. Starting out as motor sport correspondent for a number of publications he has continued to produce his comprehensive Irish Motorsport Annual every year. Since joining RTE in 1962 Michael has been a driving force behind ensuring that motor sport, both domestic and international, has been well covered by RTE since that time. His selection as winner of the Ivan Webb Memorial Trophy for 2000 was in recognition of his contribution to Irish motor sport over a long period of time. Anthony Cross, the recipient of the Millard Memorial Trophy only began his Midget Car Racing career in 1999 when he finished 5th in the 850cc Trophy , winning the Wicklow Trophy along the way and finally becoming Junior Champion. Last season he again raced in the same 850cc car, which he had completely re-built during the off season. He finished runner up in the 850cc class, 2nd in the Junior Class and again won the Wicklow Championship and finishing 6th in the Dublin Championship. After a season long battle for the Gellar Championship, he managed to win this coveted award by one point having come from behind to beat many more experienced drivers. In recognition both of his potential and his achievements he received the Millard Trophy. 2. Motorsport Ireland Announces Organisational Changes Motorsport Ireland has made a number of changes within the organisation to better reflect the ongoing implementation of the strategic plan for the development of motorsport in Ireland. Mr.Alex Sinclair, Executive Manager, will be focusing primarily on the development of the sport. Ms. Jacky Breathnach, Office Administrator, has been appointed "Tutor in Training". She will be working closely with the Irish Sports Council to implement an agreed programme of training for organisers and competitors. Mr. Oisin O'Briain, who has filled the role of Communications Officer for the past two years will be concentrating more on developing the Motorsport Ireland website and on providing a more widespread results service. Ms. Jan O'Hara will take on the role of Events Administrator while Ms. Liz Murphy will be responsible for Competition Licences. The new roles will be operational from 1st May.
