Märtin and Reid win Richard Burns Memorial Rally

Posted: September 17, 2008 5:44 PM

Rally legends Markko Märtin and Robert Reid took victory in the inaugural Richard Burns Memorial Rally at RAF Marham.

The duo won the charity event in memory of their friend and former World Champion Burns by a margin of over six minutes in the works Subaru Impreza WRC2008, showing superb pace on the tarmac stages over Saturday and Sunday. They were joined on the podium by Tom Morris/Ken Bills in a MG Metro 6R4, and Dick Maugher/Steve McNulty in their Ford Focus WRC.

A field of over 100 rally cars took part in the memorial event at the Norfolk air base, watched by thousands of fans who came to pay tribute to England’s first and only World Rally Champion.

As well as enjoying the action on the stages competitors, marshals and fans celebrated together at a rally party on Saturday evening, which included a charity auction of signed memorabilia that raised over £1500.

It is expected the event - which was sponsored by Subaru UK and Hylton Gott Subaru and organised by the Kings Lynn & District Motor Club (KLDMC) – will have raised a significant five-figure sum overall for the Richard Burns Foundation and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Robert Reid said:
“It was a fantastic event for a great cause and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was really good to do a rally with Markko, which I have never done before. I haven’t even been in a rally car for five years! I was surprised at how much at home I felt. Markko was fantastic and the Subaru Impreza was really good too. Although there is still probably some development to be done to perfect it, it certainly behaves itself and was nicely balanced. I have to thank Markko for persuading me to do it and Subaru WRT for their support. It’s been great to be out there with all the other competitors, many of whom don’t ever get the chance to get near a works WRC car. It was the people who really made the weekend, from all the organisers to the marshals, competitors and spectators.”

Event founder and RAF engineer Chris Daykin said:
“It was an awesome event for me, from the people to the cars to the atmosphere and generosity. We hope everyone enjoyed it and the event will go from strength to strength because it’s for a fantastic cause.”

Markko Märtin/Robert Reid to Compete in Subaru Impreza S14

Posted: September 6, 2008 5:12 PM

ubaru World Rally Team has confirmed it will enter the Richard Burns Memorial Rally running the new Impreza WRC2008 car as a tribute to the star who won the world title under its banner.

Rally legend and official Subaru World Rally Team test driver Markko Märtin will tackle the charity event in an Impreza WRC2008 at the Royal Air Force Marham airfield, Norfolk, over the September 13-14 weekend to celebrate the life and achievements of England's only World Rally Champion.

The announcement of the Subaru World Rally Team's appearance at the event underlines the high regard with which Subaru held its former driver and champion Burns - with Subaru UK and Hylton Gott Subaru dealership having both already committed to sponsoring the event.

The Richard Burns Memorial Rally is run by the Kings Lynn & District Motor Club (KLDMC). The single-venue tarmac rally will feature 150 competitors and take in stages of 10-14 miles. As well as a range of motorsport action there will also be a host of other attractions laid on for fans throughout the two days - including a 'Party in the Park' on party on Saturday evening with live music and entertainment for competitors, service crews and marshals.

A series of fundraising initiatives will also take place over the weekend, including a VIP Gala Dinner to be held in Officers' Mess with RAF officials - a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the tradition of a full Royal Air Force military dining-in night.

It is hoped that all Richard Burns and Subaru fans will turn out and support the special charity event in order to raise as much money as possible for the Richard Burns Foundation and RAF Benevolent Fund.

Two thirds of the entry slots available have already been snapped up, while spectator tickets sales have also been proving very popular. With limited numbers of each available both are expected to sell out quickly.

Richard Taylor, Managing Director of Subaru World Rally Team said, "SWRT are delighted to be able to support this event with Markko driving the new Impreza WRC2008. Richard was an icon of the team and a great World Champion for Subaru. We hope the event is a success and that everyone involved as a competitor, organiser or spectator has an enjoyable weekend"
