O'Mahony and Higgins enjoy success on Circuit of Kerry Stages Rally Carrigaline driver Brian O’Mahony finished an impressive 11th overall and first in class on Sunday’s (1 April) Circuit of Kerry Stages Rally. O’Mahony and Mayo co-driver John Higgins had a trouble free run in round two of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, which they are contesting this season, and earned themselves maximum points in class 6 in their OM Concrete Products and Fitzsamuels Insurance-backed Super 1600 Renault Clio, run by O’Leary Motorsport. The crew led their class throughout the entire day across the 140km of tarmac stages with the only minor problem coming from the brakes, which had been a bit off early on, as they also finished as the first 2WD car on the Tralee-based event. “It’s the best result we’ve had in a while, so I’m really, really pleased,” said 22-year-old O’Mahony. “We achieved our target by both winning the class and by getting a good overall result to get our championship push well on its way and some points in the bag. “The car ran faultlessly, apart from a minor problem with the brakes, and the stages went well. Hopefully this has set the tone for the rest of the season now.” It is the pair’s first championship points of the year as they failed to finish the opening round of the Dunlop National series, the Mayo Stages Rally, last month. O’Mahony and Higgins will next be in action in round three of the championship, the Monaghan Stages Rally, on April 22. GpN Winners: Mike Curran/Fabian McShane ELLIOTT WINS CIRCUIT OF KERRY MacHALE LEADS DUNLOP NATIONAL RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP Report courtesy of Dunlop - sponsors of the National Rally Championship Driving a Subaru WRC, Cavan’s, Patrick Elliott and his co-driver, Paul Goodman, won the Tralee based Club Fabric Circuit of Kerry, the second round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship. At the conclusion of the rally, they were a minute and six seconds ahead of second placed, Aaron MacHale/Derek Brannigan (Ford Focus). Despite having to cope without the aid of power steering over the final two stages, they retained second place - a position that was sufficient to promote them into the lead of Dunlop National Rally Championship. Glen Allen/Damien Connolly (Toyota Corolla WRC) were third. Michael Curran/Fabian McShane (Mitsubishi) won the Group N category. Meanwhile, the top two-wheel drive performance came from Brian O’Mahony/John Higgins. On board their Renault Clio, they finished a magnificent eleventh place overall and Class 6 winners by over a minute. The major retirement was that of pre-event Dunlop National Rally Championship leaders, Ray Breen/Damien Morrissey, who broke the back rear hub of their Ford Focus WRC just three miles into the opening stage after they clipped a rock. MacHale established a seven second lead over Elliott on the opening stage on the outskirts of Castleisland with Noel Redmond, in his new S12 Subaru, a further three seconds behind. Pre-even Dunlop Championship leader, Ray Breen was a first stage retirement when his Ford Focus clipped a rock, the impact broke a rear hub and retirement. Michael Curran was the top Group N driver on the stage, he was sixth overall behind Glen Allen and Kevin Barrett. Seamus Leonard (Mitsubishi) lost time with gear linkage trouble but was still second quickest in the showroom category. Out on S.S. 2, Elliott controlled proceedings and moved into a two second lead over MacHale, who lost a few seconds when he spun on gravel. Allen moved up to third - the brake problems that thwarted his efforts on S.S. 1 seemed to disappear. Redmond stalled at the stat of S.S. 2 and lost considerable time as he tried to fire his S12 in action, that saw him drop to fourth – 32 seconds off the leader. Kevin Barrett in fifth was troubled by a vibration from the brakes. Meanwhile, Michael Curran (Mitsubishi) continued to lead Group N and remarked that he was taking a steady pace. He was four seconds in front of rival, Seamus Leonard, the pair setting equal times through the stage. Jack Sleator, Niall Maguire and Sean Gallagher, all in Subaru WRC’s, rounded off the top ten. With the cancellation of Special Stage 3, Elliott stretched his lead on S.S. 4 to 17 seconds, second placed, Aaron MacHale losing time with steering woes; third placed Glenn Allen closed to within 15 seconds of the Dubliner. Elliott made some changes to the suspension set up of his Subaru and at the service halt at the Tralee Racecourse, he remarked that the changes had a profound effect on the performance of the car. Redmond continued in fourth with Group N pacesetter, Michael Curran the barometer of the showroom contenders. Yet another fastest stage time saw him slot into fifth ahead of Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC). Niall Maguire (Subaru) and Seamus Leonard shered seventh, the latter eight seconds behind fellow Group N driver, Michael Curran. Sean Gallagher and Jack Sleator completed the top ten. Stages 5 and 6 were cancelled due to a fatal accident on the main Castleisland/Abbeyfeale road. Out on the penultimate stage, Elliott blitzed his rivals, he was some 37 seconds faster than MacHale, who had to traverse the stage without power steering, remarkably, he retained second spot. Allen lost third when Redmond set the second quickest time to displace the Tyrone driver. In Group N, Seamus Leonard was quickest through the stage, but Michael Curran was very much in control of the category. Redmond crashed out of the rally on the final stage as MacHale, without the power steering, clinched runner-up spot in the event and take the lead in the Dunlop National Rally Championship. Third placed Allen had brake woes on the final stage. Curran took a magnificent fourth. Subaru pair, Kevin Barrett and Niall Maguire were fifth and sixth respectively. The top ten also included Seamus Leonard, Sean Gallagher, Jack Sleator and Alan Ring, the latter, the reigning Group N champion, was third in the category, elsewhere, Kevin Kelleher and Gabriel Martin were next in the showroom class. In the race for two-wheel drive supremacy, former Irish and British Super1600 champion, Brian O’Mahony (Renault Clio) turned in a great performance, particularly over the closing stages, to clinch the spot and eleventh overall. Local duo, Mike Quinn/Sean Enright (Ford Escort) were second in the two wheel drive category, a mere second in front of Anthony O’Halloran/Sean Moriarty (Opel Manta). Photo: autopix.ie 30/03/07 DUNLOP CONTENDERS HEAD FOR CIRCUIT OF KERRY Dunlop National Rally Championship leader, Ray Breen (Ford Focus WRC) heads an impressive entry list for the Tralee based Club Fabric sponsored Circuit of Kerry, the second round of the series on Sunday April 1st. The Kilkenny driver, who won the series in 2005, collected top points in Kerry last season when he finished second behind Tim McNulty, who wasn’t registered for the Dunlop championship. Breen is very satisfied with his performance on the first round, “I was delighted with the victory and the top points, it was a pity that Patrick (Elliott) retired, but it is a long season and anything can happen. It will be a tough battle and I have no doubt that Patrick (Elliott) will be more determined than ever.” Breen attributed his win in Mayo to the fact that it was his third outing in similar conditions, “The roads in Mayo were very slippery and I had driven in those conditions in Galway and Birr and I suppose I wasn’t fazed by them. The stages in Kerry will be different, they are usually a good surface and more predictable.” Apart from Elliott, Breen remarked that Aaron MacHale and Noel Redmond will also be a threat, “Aaron was very good on the last four stages in Mayo and if he can find that form early in Kerry, I have no doubt that he will be a strong force. Noel (Redmond) will have gained a lot of confidence from his third place and should also figure well.” Having retired at the first junction of the opening stage in Mayo, last year’s Dunlop runner-up, Patrick Elliott will be keen to get his championship back on course. Even though competitors can drop two out of their ten events, Elliott, a regular Dunlop competitor for several years, knows that he has to make inroads on Breen’s position as quickly as possible. MacHale, the only driver to break Breen’s dominance of fastest stage times in Mayo when he was quickest over the penultimate stage, is aware that a quick start is important. Noel Redmond, who wasn’t seeded in the top ten in Mayo, will be hoping to get closer to Breen’s pace and build on the third place he netted in the west of Ireland. Another driver with a desire to increasing his pace is Glen Allen (Toyota Corolla WRC), who made a late charge to net fourth place on the opening round. Having missed the first round, Martin Doherty (Subaru WRC) makes his debut in the current series in Kerry where he is seeded ahead of former triple champion, Niall Maguire. The top ten also includes Kevin Barrett, Sean Gallagher and Noel McCarrick, all in Subaru WRC’s. The quality of the Group N category, who are vying for the Patterson’s RallyNews Award, is at an all time high. Defending champion, Alan Ring (Subaru), sixth in the showroom class in Mayo heads the pack in Kerry. His title adversaries include Mitsubishi aces, Mike Curran, Seamus Leonard, Kevin Kelleher, Gabriel Martin and Eamonn Daly along with Subaru duo, Willie Fannin and Ian Barrett. The two-wheel drive category features locals, Mike Quinn and John Kearney in Ford Escorts along with Anthony O’Halloran (Opel Manta), Aidan Walsh, Ollie O’Reilly, Wesley Patterson and Ed Synan, all in Ford Escorts. . The Super 1600 class includes Brian O’Mahony (Renault Clio), Ken O’Neill (Ford Puma) and David Delaney (Ford `Fiesta), the Citroen C2’s of Barry Evans and Paul Manton and Sarah Moynihan (Peugeot 206). O’Mahony led the class by a couple of minutes in Mayo only to slip off the road (albeit at a slow speed) and out of the rally on the penultimate stage. The organisers, the Kerry Motor Club, are holding a ceremonial start in the Tralee Town Square at 6.30 on Saturday evening. Along with overall sponsor, the Tralee Vintners and the Brandon Hotel are the associate sponsors of the eight-stage event. The club are also donating part of the programme sales to the Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society. DETAILS: Organising Club: Kerry Motor Club. Clerk of the Course: Senan Raggett. O’Mahony and Mayo co-driver John Higgins are aiming to notch-up their first points of the season when they return to the wheel of their OM Concrete Products and Fitzsamuels Insurance-backed class 6 Super 1600 Renault Clio following a DNF (did not finish) on the opening round, the Mayo Stages Rally, earlier this month. The crew last competed on the Circuit of Kerry in 2004 in a Ford Ka and it was the first time O’Mahony won his class on an event and he is hoping for a similar result this weekend. “Our target for Sunday is to get a good overall finish and we will also be pushing to take the class 6 honours as well,” the 22-year-old said. “The last time I did this rally I had a really good run and I won the class in the Ka so hopefully we will have the same success this time out. It’s important that we get a strong finish and some points after the non-finish in Mayo and then we can get our championship push well on the way.” The Circuit of Kerry Stages Rally is based in Tralee, Co. Kerry, and uses 140km of stage miles across the tarmac. O’Mahony and Higgins are contesting all 10 rounds of the Dunlop National Rally Championship this season along with other selected events including two rounds of the Global Group Irish Tarmac Championship (ITC) and they also plan to compete in two rounds of the World Rally Championship (WRC), Rally Finland and their home event, Rally Ireland. 29/03/07 Programme Outlets

The rally is a counting round of two of Irelands top championships, The Dunlop National Rally Championship and The Top Part West Coast Championship and the club are expecting well in excess of the 151 cars permitted to start. With each competing car bringing a crew of between 8 – 10 personnel with them, accommodation both in Tralee town and surrounding areas will be at a premium.
