Round 1 - 2007 National Forestry Championship
Photo: Ray Gavin Posted: March 7, 2007 5:04 PM
SOLID START TO HANKOOK TYRES NATIONAL FORESTRY CHAMPIONSHIP FOR EMMA MCKINSTRY AND KENNY HULL Emma McKinstry and co-driver Kenny Hull got their 2007 Hankook tyres forestry championship campaign off to a solid start on last weekend’s Carrick-on-Suir opening round. In atrocious weather conditions the pair set a finish as their number one priority. The opening two stages ran over treacherous conditions in torrential rain and Emma and Kenny were pleased to get their Hankook shod Mitsubishi Evo 6 into first service unscathed. Over the next loop of three stages, with less standing water the Triton Showers backed team were able to push much harder and found the Hankook tyres to be working very well in the unfavourable conditions. However it wasn’t without drama. On stage four the rear differential failed, so Emma backed off, choosing to preserve the car. This proved to be a sensible choice as this loop of stages saw the demise of several group N rivals. The McKinstry motorsport team worked miracles in second service and sent the Tom Geraghty supported car back out to the stages with a new rear differential fitted. A steady run over the next two stages saw the McGaffin Contracts Mitsubishi arrive into final service holding station in 14th place overall. Over the final loop of three stages the team were to encounter further problems, with a suspected driveshaft failure on stage eight. Determined to get to the finish, Emma drove accordingly over the final two stages. With all rounds counting in this hotly contested Hankook Tyres championship, Emma and Kenny were delighted to arrive at the finish in 14th place overall and 6th in group N and get vital points on the board at this early stage. The pairing would like to thank their sponsors Triton Showers, McGaffin Contracts, Protec, McKisntry Motorsport and especially Hankook Tyres for their continued support. They look forward to working together with them again on round 2 in Mitchelstown on 25th March. Event Report Torrential rain and near gale force winds was what welcomed the Hankook Tyres National Forestry series to Carrick on Suir, with everything else under control COC Terence Kearney had no option but let mother nature have her significant contribution to the days events. So bad was the rain that as the crews gathered in Parc Ferme one competitor was overheard quipping that it was Noah's Ark type rain! Regardless of the very difficult conditions 94 eager crews splashed out of Parc Ferme and on to the first stage Clondonnel, first man on the road was Stephen Moore & Tony McHugh in their 05 Ford Focus WRC, and they set off at an admittedly cautious start to sail out of the test in a unflustered 4 th fastest, but the pace at the front was being set by local ace Trevor Harding & Mickey Joe Morrissey- they in their McKinstry supplied WRC Subaru. They set a blistering time of 4:24 which was then matched in equally blistering fashion by Brendan Creally who with Greg Shinnors on the notes brought their Group N car to match the time set down by Trevor J and hold the joint lead of the rally. Andrew Purcell and Eoin O Neil were close behind the leading pair taking the older spec Group A Subaru to a 4:28 and hold second overall. Brian McGillin was the next fastest man, an impressive feat on 4:35 because this was the first stage in a left hand drive WRC car for Brian and his navigator David Doherty. Unfortunately some unlucky road penalties on the first road section meant they were down a bit in the overall standings and therefore on the claw back up the order for the day. Other drivers taking it cautious but coming out of the stage unscathed were Sean Devine & Damien Duffin in their Subaru WRC. Frank Kelly was fastest 2wd man in his Escort, guided by Greg Mc Carthy the pair reported some moments of serious aqua-planing as the torrential overnight rain meant several mini floods on the stage and this proving a serious challenge for all the crews and cars. The rally then moved to the Gurteen forest for 2 more flood stricken stages, testament to the club and marshals was that the event was running smoothly and on time despite the terrible conditions. Gurteen 1 saw a fastest time for Creally & Shinnors as they sailed to a 6:22 and into the rally lead in their Hankook backed car by 3 seconds from Harding & Morrissey who themselves were 3 rd fastest just behind Devine & Duffin who were now beginning to warm up and move towards the leader. Purcell & O Neil were next with 4th fastest to hold 4th overall. SS3 Gurteen 2 was where the day and the conditions began to take their toll, Creally got caught out by a large flood, the hazard of choice on the day given the conditions. The Superdrive Evo came to rest off the road and was set to go no further for the day, the crew unharmed but understandably disappointed with the early ending. Next to succumb to the tricky waterlogged junctions was Andrew Purcell in his Subaru Group A car, again it was as simple as catching a flood at the wrong angle and the resulting slide put him off the road, un-damaged but stuck there and playing no further part in the days event. Sean Devine blitzed his way through the stage to a fastest time of 7:09 which took him to a one second lead of the event as Trevor Harding limped through the final few Gurteen miles on a puncture to a 7:37 which left him second overall just one second behind Devine. Kevin O Kane took second fastest on the stage with 7:17 as he settled in to his P2000 WRC Subaru. This was the stage that saw the retirement of Brian Lawlor in the StoneMad Evo as a brush with an errant tree stump damaged a turbo pipe and saw his eventual retirement in service. A great battle was anticipated after service as leader Devine held just a one second advantage over Harding. Stage 4 Slievenamon is a stage where Harding has earned many an impressive time over the years and yet again he proved his worth taking ten seconds from Devine to move into the lead of the rally. Sadly Devine was denied a chance to respond as his gearbox failed on the next stage loosing him well over a minute before retirement beckoned in service because of the gearbox fault. Meanwhile in the background Stephen Moore was beginning to turn in a furious pace which saw him fastest overall by 12 seconds on ss4 and 19 seconds on ss5. Trevor J now found himself in trouble with a damaged drive shaft and the time loss meant that the hard charging Focus of Moore & McHugh was now in the lead of the rally by 15 seconds. In the Superdrive sponsored 2wd battle it was all about Frank Kelly as he was setting a string of top 5 times in the MK2 Escort to hold 3 rd overall in the second service. This placed Kelly just in front of Kevin O Kane and a recovering Brian McGillin who was setting top 3 times as he became familiar with his new WRC Hyundai. Crews who hadn't made it this far included James Murphy and Francis Kenny in their Escort WRC, mechanical woes saw them retire on the road section after SS4. Keith Cronin and Anthony O Connail in their Hankook liveried Evo were forced into retirement with slight accident damage. Stuart Darcy & Diarmuid Falvey damaged suspension after clipping a bridge and this saw them go OTL and so ended their day. Paul Barrett rushed to the event after competing in the Malcom Wilson rally the previous day only to suffer his car stopping on SS5 with suspected diff failure, with the car stranded in the road it saw Seamus O Connell and Brian Duggan get bogged down and stuck as they attempted to pass the stricken Barrett G3 escort. Seamus was already in clutch difficulties all day and this just added to the time loss, however he was still in the event and this was more than Adrian Hethrington & Terry Walkingshaw as they retired from the 2wd battle on SS6 with half shaft failure. At the front of the field Stephen Moore continued his charge with fastest time on SS6 which was the return visit to Gurteen 1, Trevor J responded with fastest on Gurteen 2 by 6 seconds. This left the gap between the leading pair at twenty seconds in favour of Moore. With Slievenamon and Anner still left to run and they being stages where Harding had excelled in past rallies it was fair to say that the battle for the win was still far from decided. That was until Moore set a crushing time of 9:28 on Slievenamon, this was 16 seconds faster than 2nd fastest Brian McGillin & David Doherty who were by now well in tune with the new Hyundai WRC and moving back up the order recovering from the earlier time penalty. Harding then set fastest on the Anner stage by 2 seconds from Moore and by this point the rally was all but decided as the crews headed to the short Ahenny stage which was the last blast of 5.2km to bring the event to a close. Moore was almost there and he took a conservative approach to the last one which saw him tie for 3rd fastest with O Kane. Then Harding took second fastest, despite backing right off in the S8 Subaru as he thought that he felt a slip in the clutch, but the man who was fastest overall on the last stage with a magnificent 3:22 was Frank Kelly in his Mk2 Escort navigated by Greg McCarthy. This time left Kelly an impressive 4 th overall just one second behind Kevin O Kane and Martin Brady who took 3rd after a steady day in their new S6 Subaru. 5th placed overall and winning class 7 was Brian McGillin and David Doherty, happy with the performance of the Hyundai and looking forward to more miles in it. Group N winner was Colm McBride/Rodney Hicks in their Mitsubishi they were 8th overall just in front of 2nd Group N which was Justin Dunne/Sean Duggan also in a Mitsubishi. Winner of the new "clubman" Group A class was 7th Overall Brendan Connor/Alan Redstone in a Subaru. Alan Commins/Adrian Kelly were class 1 winners with Mick Nevin/Alan Higgins taking yet another win in the class 3 Escort. Sean Benskin/Robert Nugent took home class 4 spoils. John Byrnes/Kenneth Sheil were the winning juniors and Gemma Kerley/ Edel Mackey were winners of the ladies award after their rivals the Moynihan sisters retired with mechanical woes. In the Superdrive 2wd awards it was Frank Kelly/Greg Mc Carthy who were the winners of first prize. This prize consists of part payment of entry fees for another round of the Championship to the value of €150.00 for first two-wheel-drive. The winner of €75.00 for 2nd place was James Coleman/Michael Hayley, after an excellent run on their local rally. 2WD Winners - Frank Kelly/Greg McCarthy Photo: Mark Maguire So it was Stephen Moore and Tony McHugh who arrived at the finish victorious by 34 seconds on the first round of the 2007 HANKOOK Tyres forestry championship a delighted Moore thanked the club on the finish ramp for running such and excellent rally in what was very challenging weather, he also paid tribute to the job done by his co driver Tony McHugh and service crew, all of which played their part in his victory. Trevor Harding was a gracious second placed finisher, if a little disappointed about what might have been if it were not for a few small problems costing him the valuable time that could have meant the win on the day, never the less it was another impressive performance by Harding who was expertly guided by co driver and reigning champion Mickey Joe Morrissey. It was an exciting start to the championship, with 4 different leaders at different times as the day panned out, Moore was the man who was there with the pace when it mattered but the signs are that it is going to be a very exciting season ahead in the forests of the Hankook sponsored National Forestry championship Results 1 Stephen Moore/Tony McHugh (Ford Focus WRC) 64m 21s, 2 Trevor Harding/Mick Morrissey (Subaru Impreza WRC) 64m 55s, 3 Kevin O’Kane/Martin Brady (Subaru Impreza WRC) 66m 54s, 4 Frank Kelly/Greg McCarthy (Ford Escort 2.0) 66m 55s, 5 Brian McGillin/David Doherty (Hyundai Accent WRC) 67m 38s, 6 James Coleman/Michael Haley (Ford Escort 2.0) 69m 59s, 7 Brendan Connor/Alan Redstone (Subaru Impreza WRX) 70m 10s, 8 Colin McBride/Rodney Hicks (Mit. Event Preview The 2007 Hankook National Forest Rally Championship begins this Sunday with its first round the Carrick-on-Suir based Willie Loughman Memorial Forest Rally. Once more the Carrick club has worked hard to provide the competitors with a challenging rally consisting of classic stages in the Suir Valley. With 10 stages in total, six of which are different stages, meaning two non repeats, totalling just under 90 stage kms including two separate stages in the vast Gurteen Forest complex. As ever with this event other classic stages will play their part like Slievenamon, Anner and Ahenny, but first the event uses the fast and flowing Clondonnell stage to wake up the crews, many of whom will be having their first taste of forest rallying for the 2007 season. The first car leaves Parc Fermé in Carrick on Suir at 09:00 on Sunday morning for that opening stage, then continuing to Stage 2 which is the first of the two stages in the famous Gurteen forest, if Clondonnell has for some reason not blown away the cobwebs and gotten the adrenalin pumping then Gurteen is more than capable of providing the wake up call. Then the crews will head to the first service along the main Waterford road just outside Clonmel, first car due at 11:00 approx. The rally then moves north for the Slievenamon and Anner forests. The Slievenamon valley is classic rallying territory and many an exciting stage took place in these hills. Anner is the stage famous for its mix of speed and the fast jumps, another classic stage in this area and it’s a stage that is exhilarating but demands respect and often a fine line of caution. After stage 5 the cars return to service at 1pm approx before the repeat run of the 2 Gurteen stages. Final service at 14:30 approx is followed for those that have remained able for the challenge with the last loop of stages, a sting in the tail of Slievenamon and Anner with a fresh stage Ahenny the first competing cars due back at Rally HQ, The Carrick Hotel at 17:00. The Hankook backed championship is shaping up to be a very exciting one with a high quality group of drivers committing to the first round. Number 1 seed is Stephen Moore partnered by Tony McHugh, winners of the last round of the 2006 championship the crew have moved up in machinery to the latest 05 spec WRC Ford Focus. Already Stephen has signalled his ability in this new machine by winning the first round of the N.I championship at Kirkistown. Stephen plans an extensive test in the week before the Carrick opener to ready man and machine for the challenges of the 07 series. Second on the road are James Murphy and John Brennan. Murphy is a regular campaigner in these woods and the championship, no doubt he will be eager to start the 2007 campaign with a solid result and fast times in the Suir valley. Third seed is local ace Trevor Harding guided by last years champion co driver M.J Morrissey. Trevor will have the McKinstry S8 Subaru which won last year’s event and with previous form of both car and crew in these forests it could well be this particular car that has yet more champagne sprayed on it outside the Carrig Hotel on Sunday eve. Kevin O Kane and Martin Brady are 4th placed seeds, Kevin in his Subaru is a regular fixture of the championship for many years and was 3rd overall in last year’s championship. No 14 seed Sean Devine in his Impreza WRC is another to make the trip down from Tyrone in his Subaru WRC, Sean has made many trips to the southern series in his Grp N car and showed serious pace, could he be the man now in his WRC Subaru to take overall victory? His last home outing of 06 saw him take a victory on the Glens rally so his most recent form is a winning one, is car 14 the space to watch? Owen Murphy burst onto the Carrick stages in dramatic fashion last year, he and co driver Garry Nolan were leading the event in their Grp N Evo before eventually finishing a close second to Kenny McKinstry. Owen is this years Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman award winner and another whose previous form on these stages should put him in line of a good result. Brian Lawlor/Peter Kavanagh are the next crew on the list, they too in a Mitsubishi Grp N. Brian was another man to lead an event outright last year in a Grp N car on the Mitchelstown event, perhaps he could be the Evo in front this weekend. Brian Mc Gillin/David Doherty will debut their new Hyundai Accent WRC, this car has been a proven success with its previous owners the Middleton family in the UK, and Brian is sure to settle into the car quickly and continue its success. Andrew Purcell/Eoin O Neil are another crew to debut a new car with their 555 Grp A Impreza, these cars are fabulous sounding in any forest and Purcell is a sure contender for podium honours here having set the top 2wd pace in the Carrick woods last year in a Honda Civic. A notable entrant at number ten is Brendan Creally is his Hankook backed Lancer Evo. Creally is a champion in an Evo before in the UK Ancro forests and he brings to Carrick with him not only a champion car in the ex works ADR Mitsubishi but also a champion co driver in triple Irish forestry series victor Greg Shinnors. Creally is on the record as saying he will take time to bed in to Irish forests, but don’t be surprised if that familiarisation takes meters rather than miles and Brendan is right into the leading battle from stage 1. Another Hankook backed driver is Keith Cronin who starts at no11, Keith is a runner up in the current Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman award scheme, and he has displayed tremendous pace on his debut 4wd forest outings in the latter half of 06, no more is there the element of surprise about his fabulous pace but that superb pace itself is sure to have lost none of its effect over the winter. Portadown based Superdrive Motorsports Centre have just announced their exciting support of the Hankook Tyres National Forestry Championship by sponsoring the two-wheel drive category. The sponsorship package takes the form of prize money for the fastest two-wheel-drive cars in each round. This prize consists of part payment of entry fees for another round of the Championship to the value of €150.00 for first two-wheel-drive and €75.00 for 2 nd place. The two-wheel-drive cars on each event are often the part of the field where most excitement is found for the spectators, not that any of the main protagonists in the 2wd battles needed any excuse before now but surely this generous and worthwhile prize is yet another incentive to chase after the two-wheel-drive awards. Frank Kelly is first 2wd car on the road and fresh from victory in the recent Donegal Forest rally Frank will as ever be eager to be the man in front. He will be partnered this weekend by experienced Cork man Greg McCarthy as regular co driver Liam Brennan will be away relaxing on holiday, Greg may not find the sideways angles of Frank to be a relaxing holiday but its sure to be an exciting adventure. The next 2wd men who are certain to be engrossed in the battle for Escort supremacy will be Adrian Hetherington/Terry Walkinshaw and in the black machine Seamus O Connell/Brian Duggan both men will start with numbers 21 and 22 on their doors respectively. Seamus is the reigning 2wd champion and will be fired up to retain that title while Adrian should be confident following a 3rd overall in a wee 1600 on the Donegal Forest rally. James Coleman is the local man who could upset this Mk2 applecart as he will start at no 13 in his Suirway Forklifts backed example. However all this quality mentioned here is only a brief and vague cross section of what is a high quality entry of over 90 cars for the seasons opener, already its plain to see that the 2007 Hankook National Forestry series is going to be an exciting and competitive one, with WRC, Group N, modified and Clubmen, seasoned veterans and juniors, front wheel drive and rear wheel drive and even ladies and gentlemen this is certain to be the beginning of an action packed and exciting year, watch on and enjoy!
