Moffett Buggy Wins Again At Hutt Cross Sam Moffett stamped his authority on Hutt Cross last Sunday by winning Monaghan Motor Club’s Autocross by 7 seconds from his uncle Maurice with Mervyn Wedlock third in his Escort G4. The event was run to assist Chris Rodgers who was paralysed in an accident during the 2004 Monaghan Stages Rally, the Clerk of the Course for the day was Double National Champion Niall Maguire, the proceeds on the 101 entries received, and donations on the Gate will be presented to Chris and his family in the near future. On a day that saw one of the largest displays of horsepower at Hutt Cross, Sam Moffett recorded fastest time of the day on the second and third runs after Mervyn Wedlock led the field after the first run. The only car to compete with Sam’s Buggy on the second and third run was his father Robert’s Metro-Cosworth although he then had to carry a 5% time penalty to compensate for 4-wheel drive. Among the special entries for the event was National Rally Championship leader Charlie Donnelly double driving Maurice Moffett’s 290bhp Millington-engined Starlet, the Maghera driver commented after the event “She’s some yoke, that’s the hardest I’ve had to work in a car for a while, I don’t think I’ve ever driven a car like it”. Enda Keenan was putting in competitive times early on, but his gearbox exploded before he could complete a timed run. Class winners for the event included Mickey Conlon winning Class 1 in his Rallycross Mini, Shane McGirr won Class 2 in his Suzuki engined Starlet. Stephen Lipsett took his 106Gti to victory in Class 3, while Class 4 remains the domain of reigning Autocross Champion Joseph Smith. Maurice Moffett showed both Charlie Donnelly and Jim McKenna how a Starlet should be driven as he won Class 5 when Sam ascended into the Overall Event lead. Full Results and Times on:
