Cork Motor Club hosted round 5 of the Yokohama Tyres Munster Loose Surface Autocross Championship in Campbell’s Quarry, Clonakilty last Sunday where James, Gerard and Jimmy Lucey took first, second and third overall respectively with just 5.53 secs separating the three after 4 runs.

It was Gerard Lucey who lead for three of the four runs clocking up times at least two seconds faster than the others in a Toyota special, but when it came to the final run everything went right for James in his Mazda special and he clocked a time of 1.45.56 compared to Gerard’s 1.47.65 and Jimmy’s 1.51.13.
Class 1 went to Michael Lenehan in a Honda Civic on1.52.38 second in the class was William Angland, also in a Honda Civic on 1.55.68.Third in this class went to Conor Bradley again in a Honda Civic on 1.55.79.
Class 2 honours went to Jimmy Deane in his mint Mk 2 Escort on 1.51.31 he was followed home closely by James Lehane (Civic) on 1.52.52 and Martin Cullinane (Escort Mk2) on 1.53.49 all three using their forest rallying experience to get to grips with the loose gravel.
Class 4 was won by Greg McCarthy in a Subaru Legacy, Greg’s time in the big car a creditable 1.56.73. Sadly Greg retired from the event before the final run so we didn’t see the best of him I’m sure.
David Forde took class 5 in a Toyota special on 1.51.18.Second in class 5 went to Donal Carey who retired after the second run. However his time of 2.04.35 on run two was sufficient to secure second in the class.
Victory in the Junior section went to Sean Kerins in a Toyota Starlet (1.57.22); second Junior home was Ian Stanley in a Honda Civic (1.57.63) and third in the junior class went to Charles O Neill Jnr.again in a Honda Civic (1.58.47)
Best CMC member was Johnny Casey on 1.58.21 in a Peugeot 205 GTI.
The weather Gods smiled on the West Cork venue with the forecast rain failing to materialise, although dust was a bit of a problem. But then if I had to choose I know which of the two I would prefer.
30 entrants enjoyed the course set out for them by C.O.C.Paul Casey and his crew and they are to be congratulated on running a very well organised event with the fourth run finished by 3.30 pm. Which meant early prize giving and everyone on the road home early.
