DODD AND BARGERY RECEIVE ROYAL RECOGNITION

Marcus Dodd (Poole) and Andrew Bargery (Brighton) were last week awarded an honorary testimonial from the Royal Humane Society for an act of bravery during last year's Swansea Bay National Rally. Both Marcus and Andrew jumped into a lake to aid Paul Jones and Hamish Campbell whose rally car had landed upside down and was totally submerged.

With the car rapidly filling with water and Paul and Hamish unable to escape the scene, Marcus and Andrew waded to the stricken vehicle and brought the pair to safety. Prince Edward and Sophie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, presented the testimonial inscribed on vellum in a ceremony at Government House, Douglas at the weekend.

The citation is awarded to someone who has put himself or herself in considerable danger to save the life of someone else.

Marcus said: “We are both very honoured to receive this award. We both acted on instinct in a very tricky situation and we did what every other person would do in the same situation. We are just glad that Paul and Hamish are still here because of what we did.”

John Skinner, sporting director of ANCRO (who put them forward for the award) commented:: “We in ANCRO felt that Marcus and Andrew’s actions were worthy of some commendations and it is because of their deed that Paul and Hamish can still compete in rallying. I certainly felt that they were two worthy recipients of the award.”
