Moffett Returns To The Top At Latton.
It was power-to-weight ratio rather than power that made the difference at a wet Hut Cross on Sunday last when Robert Moffett recorded his first overall victory in the Wedlock Plant Hire Autocross Championship since he retired his Metro-Cosworth, taking the family R6 buggy to a 0.66 second victory over Ronnie Coulter. The final podium position went to Stephen Lipsett in his 106Gti, he continued his Championship form by finishing as the fastest Junior competitor.

There were strong showings also from Robert’s son Sam double driving with his father and Ollie O’Rielly had one hand on the overall trophy until he carried a little too much speed over a crest and landed on a clay bank busting a rear wheel and dropping 6 seconds to finish 6th overall. Joseph Smith, the reigning Autocross and Club Champion and winner of rounds 1 & 2 suffered small time consuming off’s and had to settle for a class 4 win and 5th overall.

Sam Moffett was the initial pacesetter on the first run until Robert eclipsed that time by over 3 seconds; Willie Woods was third fastest on the same second as Sam Moffett. On the second run the early competitors stole a march on the rest of the field as they set times on a relatively dry surface; this allowed Ronnie Coulter to set the fastest time on the second run. Ollie O’Rielly was slightly slower in second while Sam Moffett closed the gap to his father with third fastest. On the final timed run Robert was fastest recording the fastest time of the day while the remaining podium positions went to Stephen Lipsett and Tommy Donlon.

In the Classes Tommy Donlon’s 3rd fastest time on run 3 was enough to lift him 4 seconds clear of Michael Conlon and Stephen Wright in Class 1. Newcomer Scott Winslow was the pace setter in Class 2 with fastest times on the second and third runs while Class 2 Champion Danny McCormick led the rest home in 2nd place 2 seconds adrift. Ronan Rudden was a further second back in third. Class 3 has become the domain of Stephen Lipsett finishing 5 seconds clear of Class 3 Champion Jim McKenna while Willie Woods couldn’t sustain his early pace and finished third in class.

The Watters brothers from Donegal returned to Latton to mount a challenge in Class 4 but had to settle for 2nd & 3rd behind Champion Joseph Smith, with Conor getting the better of John on this occasion. With Robert Moffett deferring to the overall category Ronnie Coulter takes the spoils in Class 5 with Sam Moffett second in the little R6 Buggy. Despite his wall of death ride under the rock face Ollie O‘Rielly came away with 3rd in class but was happy enough to have the G3 intact for next weekends Circuit Of Kerry rally.

The Wedlock Plant Hire Autocross Championship returns in July.
