Round 1 - 2006 National Rally Championship
Posted: March 13, 2006 11:21 PM
CHARLIE’S MAYO For Charlie Donnelly with co-driver Paddy Toner the Mayo Stages Rally was an event of fire and ice! The ice was present on the first stage, not an easy start for any rally driver. The Meteor Corolla shot off like a rocket on the ice, glancing a wall and bank. And the ice caused fire!, as the bank had dislodged the exhaust, which in turn burnt the dipstick holder, which let oil run onto the hot engine, and also the flames from the leaking exhaust set the wiring on fire after stage four. “That’s what rallying’s all about, a challenge, and things often are testing” explains Charlie. Despite all this Charlie was in sight of Ray Breen who was to crash on stage three, leaving Charlie to take a momentous victory, despite a few moments whilst running totally unsuitable slick tyres on wet roads on stages 5 and 6. Charlie is chasing his first Irish National Championship title having finished second on his last real attempt in 1997 in an Opel Manta 400. “As my co driver Paddy Toner said. Last year we lost rallies over simple things, but maybe this is our year as we still won despite all the simple things going against us.” Round 2 of the Irish National Championship is the Circuit of Kerry on March 2nd. “It’s an event that I don’t have a lot of experience of, Eugene has done more rallying down there, but I’m very much looking forward to it.” The Donnelly brothers hope to hold onto this unique position of leading the two premier Irish rally championships in identical Toyota Corolla WRC’s, both prepared with pride by Draperstown’s, McGeehan Motorsport. “It would be great if we could keep this record up, not just on the championship front but on each rally itself! We will have fun trying anyway.”” commented Charlie. Eugene remarks. “It’s such a huge effort from everyone in the team, and of course the sponsors who we are so grateful for their support. And that goes to everyone who has joined the supporters club as well, it all helps our rallying efforts.” DONNELLY WINS OPENING ROUND OF DUNLOP CHAMPIONSHIP IN MAYO The opening round of the 2006 Dunlop National Rally Championship, the Castlebar based TF Royal Hotel Mayo Rally was won by Derry driver, Charlie Donnelly. Partnered by Paddy Toner, they brought their Toyota Corolla WRC back to Castlebar with a 20 second winning margin over the Subaru WRC of Patrick Elliott/Rory Kennedy. Glen Allen/Damien Connolly (Toyota Corolla WRC) were over a minute adrift in third. The Group N category was won by defending champions, Michael Curran/Fabian McShane (Mitsubishi), they were 39 seconds ahead of Kevin and Martin Kelleher (Mitsubishi). The top two wheel drive exponents were Mark Alcorn/Kevin McCafferty (Toyota Corolla), they finished just outside the top ten. Breen punched in the fastest time on the opening stage, Ballyheane and took a lead of eleven seconds over Donnelly, who was off the road, albeit briefly, on the first right hand junction; luckily, his Toyota Corolla was undamaged. Niall Maguire slotted his Subaru into third place, some four seconds behind followed by Martin Doherty, also in a Subaru while Glen Allen (Toyota Corolla) finished the stage in fifth place. Sean Devine (Subaru) occupied sixth place as Patrick Elliott, with new co-driver, Rory Kennedy calling the notes, remarked that it was taking time to adjust to his new S10 Subaru. Elliott shared seventh place with Group N leader, Michael Curran, who reckoned that a misfire cost him a few seconds. Aaron MacHale (Toyota Corolla) had an overshoot, he was ninth and Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi), despite a difficulty with the throttle response system, held tenth. Breen gained an additional eight seconds on the Party Mountain stage to lead Donnelly by 19 seconds with Elliott leapfrogging a number of drivers to move into third - ten seconds behind Donnelly and a similar margin ahead of Niall Maguire. Noel Redmond retired his Subaru WRC with a turbo problems. The rally lead changed when Breen crashed out on the third stage, Lough Mask, his Dunlop backed Ford Focus slid off on some standing water on a right hand bend and ended up in a field. Although three wheels were broken, they managed to get the car moving but unfortunately the level of the field was some 60 centimetres below the level of the road and there was no way out. Sean Devine also crashed out. Meanwhile, Donnelly, who overshot on the second stage, had another problem on Stage 3 when the oil dipstick blew out, luckily, he made it to the stage finish although he lost eleven seconds and the lead to Elliott. On S.S. 4. Donnelly was four seconds faster than his Cavan rival and arrived at the Ballinrobe service halt with a three second lead. Elliott was in awe at the power being delivered by his new Subaru and also expressed his delight with co-driver, Kennedy. Glen Allen moved into third and remarked at the sheer pace of the series. Group N leader, Curran was a magnificent fourth, even though his Mitsubishi punctured on S.S. 3. Niall Maguire (Subaru) endured a few spins and intercom woes on his way to fifth place. Group N exponent, Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) in sixth place overall, set the fastest Group N times on S.S. 3 and 4 even though the throttle response was still posing problems, the damp roads made it a little easier. The Subaru WRC's of Martin Doherty and Noel McCarrick were next in general classification in a top ten that was rounded of by Aaron MacHale and Alan Ring (Subaru) who had identical times. On the repeat of Ballyheane and Party Mountain stages, the leading duo traded stage times, with Donnelly caught on slicks for the latter stage, nevertheless, he retained the lead but Elliott was only two seconds behind. Allen remained in third while a charge from Maguire yielded fourth. Although Kelleher cut Curran's Group N lead to 14 seconds, a stall on S.S. 6 and a subsequent spin saw him lose time and Curran entered the penultimate stage with a 30 second lead. Fellow Group N contender, Alan Ring (Subaru) was some 22 seconds further adrift. Aaron MacHale retired his Toyota on the Party Mountain stage close to the infamous "Coleman's Bridge". On the penultimate stage, Donnelly gained 18 seconds and with both recording identical times on the final stage, Donnelly emerged victorious by 20 seconds. Elliott finished a minute and eleven seconds ahead of third placed Glen Allen with former champion, Niall Maguire taking fourth spot. Curran secured Group N from Kelleher and Alan Ring, the trio occupying fifth, sixth and eighth places respectively. Martin Doherty (Subaru WRC) was seventh. Noel McCarrick (Subaru) was ninth and James M. Stafford (Mitsubishi) completed the top ten. Breen Goes Fencing in Mayo Defending National Champions Ray Breen and Andrew Purcell went to Mayo for the first instalment of the 2006 Dunlop National Championship already on the back of 2 very encouraging results, 5th place in Galway was followed by a dominant victory in Birr on the previous weekend to Mayo. However regaining the Dunlop National Championship is the main goal of 2006 and Ray and Andrew travelled to Castlebar in a confident but relaxed mood. Reece showed the stages to be slippy and road conditions to be as treacherous as possible with the recent cold weather and snow that had covered part of the Mayo Mountains. However Sunday dawned brightly in ever sense of the word, Breen left the start ramp at the T.F Royal Hotel in Castelbar in bitterly cold yet strong sunshine, the ice on the stages was thawing rapidly. Stage one provided normal service resumed for the Keltech engineering Ford Focus WRC, Ray and Andrew emerged from the short 8.7Km Ballyheane stage stopping the clocks 11 seconds clear of Charlie Donnelly. Ray reported a clean but cautious stage, taking no risks as he bedded himself in to the slippy stages. Stage 2 was the very challenging Partry Mountain Stage again Breen and Purcell kept a consistent pace in the Dunlop Shod Focus over the tricky stage to end the stage 8 seconds in front of Donnelly and 9 seconds ahead of Patrick Elliot in his new S10 Impreza WRC. Stage 3 was to prove slightly less fortunate, just after the mountain section of the Lough Mask test the roads open out to a faster main road after the twisty arduous mountain pass. Entering a 4 Left which was entered flat in 6th gear a line of running water across the road from the thawing conditions caught the front wheels of the Rally Idol backed Focus and pitched it across the tarmac. Despite Breen’s quick reactions and the best of efforts to catch the ever increasing moment a harsh bank with vicious stones was waiting to catch the pair. The rear of the Focus obscutteled a line of fencing posts and the car came to rest inside the soft boggy ground. Photo: www.xlr8motorsport.com It was an exceptionally fast trip to the scenery, but luckily one that inflicted minimal damage in the circumstances. Damage was contained to 2 broken wheels a damaged driveshaft and brake disc with some cosmetic damage to door and sill. It was not the fence posts that defeated Breen’s Mayo challenge rather the depth to which the car sunk in the soft boggy ground. The car was stuck solid and despite a gate back to the road being close at hand the Focus could not be driven straight out of the Mayo Muck. Ray remained positive after the accident commenting “sure that’s Rallying your travelling at fair speed and sometimes things can catch you out in a split second, we had the water marked in our notes but it just caught us that bit more than we expected- the car is fine just stuck, we will get it out hose it down and Tom Gahan will polish her up for Rally Ireland. We were unlucky as we were leading the Rally by 19 seconds coming into the stage, but that’s the nature of the sport now we look forward to Rally Ireland next week and then Kerry where the National gets back on track for us” Pictures of the car and the aftermath of the accident are available on www.xlr8motorsport.com and click on the news section. Kelleher Brothers begin National challenge with second place spoils Clonakilty brothers Kevin & Martin Kelleher began their 2006 National Championship campaign with a very satisfying second place result. The Mayo stages began with the threat of black ice and melting snow making for very treacherous conditions and it was with some trepidation that the Group N cars began the first stage. The roads were icy in places and whilst thawing rapidly in the strong morning sun the roads were still waiting to catch out the unwary. Kelleher’s in their AMF Motorsport Lancer Evo 9 arrived to the end of the first stage reporting a slightly cautious steady run, however the approach was strong enough for second in Group N and 10th overall, however the Group N leader Michael Curran and Fabian Mc Shane were on a blistering pace 6 seconds up in the short 5 mile stage. Stage 2 was the epic Partry mountain stage which offers every challenge to the drivers from tight twisty lanes to flat out sections over the crests at the top of the mountain. Kevin and Martin exited the stage again second to the flying Curran but slightly unsettled by an ECU problem which meant no throttle response and poor anti lag, given the wet conditions the problem was not slowing them significantly but it was a problem which Kevin needed to drive around. On arrival in Ballinrobe racecourse for service Kevin held 6th overall and 18seconds behind Grp N leader Curran having taken a slender 1 second from Curran in the both the mountain 3rd stage and the fast flowing stage 4. Kelleher then pushed further to take 3 seconds from Curran to bring the gap to 14 seconds. Such was the pace of the leading 2 Group N cars the Kelleher SWS services backed Evo 9 was already in overall terms 33 seconds up on Alan Ring and over 1 minute ahead of the Stafford cousins in their Evo 8. Willie Fannin who is always a strong rival for honours in group N had unfortunately retired on stage 2. Curran responded with a stormer again on the Partry mountain stage 6 with fastest time by 16 seconds which put the overall result firmly in his hands. Kevin Kelleher concentrated on holding his strong second place advantage and on getting the car home undamaged in preparation for his upcoming home event West Cork where he is the defending Group N champion. On the final stage the short 5 mile blast just outside Cong village the day long rivals Curran and Kelleher tied for second fastest to end the day with the first batch of points on board for what is sure to be an exciting season in the Dunlop National Rally Championship. At the finish a very happy Kevin Kelleher commented, “great rally with lovely stages, thankfully the weather lifted well as the day went on- we ran Kumho intermediates all day and they coped fine with the conditions, not so sure the snow would have agreed with intermediates though so glad it stayed away!. We have a small problem with the anti lag in the car which cost us a small bit of time, but not to take away from Michael Curran he drove a great rally and we enjoyed the battle I’m looking forward to the season and the competition ahead” Kevin Kelleher is supported by KUMHO TYRES, THE BIG FELLA Clonakilty, Rally Idol, Monterra Properties, Clona Dairies Clonakilty, SWS Property Services, Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman Award and www.XLR8Motorsport.com for more updates and copyright free images please visit www.kellehermotorsport.com Stafford’s kick off 2006 Dunlop Championship Campaign. The Stafford cousins from Wellington Bridge, James M and James F Stafford, kicked off their Dunlop national championship campaign in fine style by taking 10th overall and 4th in group N on the opening round of the championship, the Mayo stages rally. The cousins were very aware that getting points on the board at this early stage was a top priority, and a cautious approach on the opening round see’s them lie behind 2005 group N champion Michael Curran, Billy Coleman award runner up Kevin Kelleher and the former Irish formula Ford champion Alan Ring in the championship standings. The pair had been seeded back at 58 but with their excellent 4th overall finish and class win on the Laois stages the week previous, the cousins were re-seeded back up the field. The event started on a sour note with a nasty accident involving fellow Wexford competitor Liam Wall and his West Cork navigator, Bob Kelly. Both men were taken to hospital, Bob suffering leg injuries while Liam, although very stiff and sore, escaped injury. All the members of the Stafford motorsport team would like to wish both Bob and Liam a speedy recovery and a quick return to the stages. The stages were extremely slippy and the cousins were just happy to return to service in the Eddie Power JCB Digger Hire backed Lancer, and after the opening two stages the cousins were 15th overall and 5th in class, although almost 50 seconds behind the flying Michael Curran who was on an amazing pace in his new Lancer. On the first stage of the second loop, James got a reminder of just how slippy the stages were, a slight off in the Power’s of Ballycullane Lancer loosing them some ground on the class leaders but a timely reminder that there was still a lot of learning to be done with the new mount and that a points finish was the aim of the day. However, stage four saw them set joint third fastest time and saw them arrive back in service, 13th overall, but still 5th in the ultra competitive group N class. The DJ motorsport mechanics fettled the South East Welding Services Lancer in service and sent the pair back out ready for action. James was starting to get a feel for the stages, and stage 5 saw him take the joint second fastest time in group N, a time that moved the pair move up to 10th overall and 4th in group N. A conservative run through the 6th stage saw the pair maintain their 10th position and 4th in group N as they entered service for the final time in their Wexford Design and Engineering backed Evo 8. James commented in service “the stages have been very slippy, were happy with where were lying. It’s a long championship and the aim is to just bring the car home and get some points on the board.” And bring the DJ motorsport run Lancer home they did, the pair setting fastest group N time on the final stage to take 10th overall and 4th in group N. At the end James was very pleased with days efforts. “Were delighted to get the car home and it’s great to get some points on the board at the start of the season. The car didn’t miss a beat all day, we’ll be looking to up our pace the next day out, we’ll have to to get near these boys!” James M and James F Stafford are sponsored by Powers of Ballycullane, South East Welding Services, Wexford Design and Engineering, Pat Culleton and Son Crane hire, Moran Auto Repairs, David Doran Asphalt roofing, Eddie Power JCB Digger Hire, Pat Neville and Sons, Neville Auto-Body repairs, DJ Motorsport Rally car Hire and Boland’s of Waterford. If you want to get in on the action with the Stafford motorsport team, they are now setting up a supporters club where you can get items ranging from jackets and baseball caps to stickers and news letters. This is a great way to give your support to one of the fastest crew in the national scene, while also being kept up to date with the latest news and information on the cousin’s assault on the National championship crown. 02/03/06 Updated entry list, Updated reaserve list and updated Junior list available. Details on Marshals Meetings Points 28/02/06 Dunlop National Rally Championship, Round 1 Preview from www.motorsportireland.com The 2006 Dunlop National Rally Championship begins beneath the backdrop of the Partry Mountains that dominate the County Mayo landscape. The eight stage Castlebar based TF Royal Hotel Mayo Rally on Sunday next (March 5th.) is the first of the ten round series. All of the top contenders have set their sights on the ultimate goal, the Vard Memorial Trophy, a quest that involves nine other rounds that will bring the Dunlop entourage throughout all four provinces of Ireland. Reigning Dunlop National Rally champion, Ray Breen heads the capacity entry. Last season, it took the Kilkenny driver a few rounds before he fully acclimatised to the Dunlop backed Ford Focus WRC. His first victory in the Dunlop series came on his home event, the Raven's Rock Rally and that was followed with further victories in the Sligo Rally and the Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally; the acquisition of top points in Galway before clinching the series in Clare. He rounded off the year with a fine victory in the Fastnet Rally. "I'm delighted to be defending my title in 2006. There are several drivers well capable of making this year's Dunlop Championship as equally exciting as last year. Drivers like Charlie Donnelly and Patrick Elliott, then there's Niall Maguire. I reckon that 2006 will see a return to form for the three times national champion. He showed good form on his last Dunlop round in Clare and I predict that he will be a much more formidable opponent this year. While Michael Barrable will miss out in Mayo, he will join the championship in Kerry and he will also pose a serious threat." said Breen. Derry's Charlie Donnelly had to wait until the penultimate round in Clare to register his first win of the 2005 Dunlop campaign, it is unlikely that he will have to endure such a wait this season, he will continue to campaign the Toyota Corolla WRC he used last year. Patrick Elliott, who led the Dunlop series after two rounds in 2005, will drive his S10 Subaru WRC, he has yet to register an outright win in the campaign. Former triple national champion, Niall Maguire will start from the number four berth in Castlebar and it will be interesting to see if Breen's prediction about the Monaghan driver will come true. Noel Redmond will begin his Dunlop campaign in a P2000 Subaru WRC but could is expected to switch to a higher specification car within a few rounds. Seeded at number six is Tyrone's, Glen Allen in a Toyota Corolla WRC. The top ten also features Sean Devine and Tommy Graham in Subaru WRC's along with Sligo's, Noel McCarrick also in a Subaru WRC and Patterson's RallyNews Dunlop Group N champion, Michael Curran. Curran was one of the sensations of the 2005 Dunlop season, he secured several top ten finishes and will be aiming to repeat such performances this season. He has sold his championship winning car and will drive a Mitsubishi 8.5 Evo in Castlebar. His Group N opposition in the west of Ireland is impresive, it includes Seamus Leonard in a Mitsubishi Evo9, former Dunlop Group N champion, Willie Fannin (Subaru), Frank Wray (Mitsubishi), Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi), Alan Ring (Subaru N12), Ian Barrett, Gabriel Martin in Mitsubishi's, Alan Nesbitt and PJ McGrath, both driving Subaru's and Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi). Seeded at 58 is Wexford's, James Stafford (Mitsubishi Evo8), he finished fourth overall in last Sunday's Birr and District Auto Club event in Roscrea and could present the championship regulars with an additional battle. Meanwhile, Hugh Martin Doherty (Subaru WRC), Aaron MacHale (Toyota Corolla WRC) are also entered for the season's opening round. Martin Doherty (Subaru WRC) and the Escort Cosworths of Joe MacHugh and David NcNulty are also competing. The two wheel drive contingent features the Toyota Starlet of Maurice Moffett, the Peugeot 205's of Mac McKenna and Dominic McLoughlin and the Escorts of Paddy Boyle, Gordon Rogers, Liam Wall, Rodney Wilton and Brian Armstrong. The last date for receipt of applications is, as previously advised, Friday, February 10th 2006. Mayo & District Motorsport Club advises that it does not operate a ‘first come first served’ policy, and that all entries received before the closing date will receive equal consideration. 10/01/06 Details of the 2006 Mayo Stages Rally have been announced by Mayo & District Motorsport Club. The opening round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship as well as the first round of the Quinn Group Border Rally Championship, the Mayo Stages Rally will take place this year on March 5th, 2006. The 2006 Rally will once again be based in the county town of Castlebar. Mayo & District Motorsport Club is delighted to announce that the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre Castlebar will return as title sponsor for the third successive year following successful events in 2004 and 2005.
