09/09/05 A showdown is set for Mullingar and this weekends Castle Single Stage rally where the inaugural champion of the 2005 Sleator Opel Midlands East Rally Championship will be decided. Based in the Bloomfield House hotel and with over 30 miles of testing tarmac this rally will see a season long battle draw to a close, not only in the overall standings of the championship but also in the closely fought class battles. Scrutineering takes place on Saturday evening at the premises championship sponsor Sleator Opel. This is a championship which the winner can come from any class due to the class based scoring and it is a series which is designed with the clubman competitor in mind as WRC cars are not eligible to score points. Championship leaders as we head to round 4 the Castle stage are Moynalty crew James/Joe Cassidy. They have been in dominant form this season having 3 Class wins in Birr, Midland and A.L.M.C this giving them a total of 45 points. However close behind them is Andrew Lang/Oliver O’Reilly on 42 points they are most certainly not to be discounted to overhaul the Cassidy’s as maximum points in the Castle Single Stage could leave us with a tie for the overall position and a tie break situation. Just behind this battle in 3rd is Gene Callan on 34 points. The 3rd placed navigators Sean Brunton, a local man this weekend and then Dominic Dunne are currently tied on 34 points. For the Class positions there are plenty of interesting battles. Tom Holton is the man to beat in Class 6 drivers he has 2 wins and 32 points. This weekend will be a good “window of opportunity” for Tom to tie up this year’s class award. Just behind Tom is John Kelly and Rallyings most famous Bread Man Adrian Quinn are just behind tied on 28 points. The leading class 6 navigators are Alan Moran who leads on 31 points and Robbie Shaw on 30 points, closely followed by Master Electrician Timmy England and Insurance Mogul Martin Mc Garrity tied on 22 points. In Class 1 it’s the “Woody” brothers David & Robert Woodcock, Robert again makes a return to Co Drive in the bright yellow Swift being the “rising superstar” of the siblings!! They are on 24 points ahead of 3 drivers sharing 22 points, Colin Flanagan, John O’Donnell and fast charging EARS lady Sarah Moynihan. Class 1 navigators also have a 3-way tie with a deadlock between Anthony Hoey, Brendan Furlong and Amy Moynihan who partners her sister in the EARS Micra. Fans of the Woody Swift are encouraged to greet the passing of the car with the patented “Team Wave” this weekend!! Class 2 sees Declan & Sean O’Toole lead on 25 points this is despite a bit of bad luck on ALMC where a wee off into the scenery meant a dash to prepare a new shell in time for Castle. Aidan Cunniffe holds second placed driver with 20 points. Colm Haughey is 2nd placed class 2 navigator and he is hoping someone will seek his services for the Castle event as his regular driver Ken Lawlor who is 3rd placed driver in this class is still recuperating after his unfortunate Cashel Crash. Anyone in need of class 2 co drivers this weekend could do worse than to contact the championship team who can pass on Colm’s contact details. Finally in this class 3rd placed navigator is Alan Higgins. Niall Whelan holds the lead in Class 3 Driver with a tally of 30 points Limerick driver Ian Roche in his potent ex works Peugeot is 2nd placed driver on 27 points followed by joint 3rd placed drivers Tony Gibbons and the man who has the nicest bling bling wheels and number plates on his car……David Patrick Roe. In the Co Drivers stakes it is Limericks Paul Roche who partners Ian in the 206 Peugeot leading on 27 points. 2nd placed navigator is Larry Hand while 3rd navigator is John Corrigan. Also Mr Jondol aka John Quinn makes a return to the class 3 championship this weekend in another ex works Peugeot S1600 his bright yellow 106 Maxi, hoping for better luck in the G MAC car than previous outings. In class 4 it’s a family affair Johnny Bang and Baby Bang otherwise known as John Devine/Barry Devine they are “banging” their way to a healthy class lead from Pat Shorthall/Willie Fitzpatrick who struggled to the finish just about in A.L.M.C having no clutch for the last 2 Stages. Rumours of Johnny Bang chasing another Baby bang around Parc Ferme in ALMC after a slight excursion on stage 1 in another Bang Motorsport machine have been greatly exaggerated!! Well know and admired MK2 exponent is Gordon Rogers and he partnered by Philip Mc Entee lead class 5. This no doubt helped by in ALMC by a fine 6th overall. John Agnew and Thomas Mc Govern are 2nd and 3rd placed drivers respectively while Kevin Mc Govern and Clement Bell hold 2nd and 3rd placed navigators. However terms and conditions apply to the above scores, those terms being 3 tough stages and 30 tarmac miles in the Mullingar area on Sunday next, there is much to play for in many classes and all will be bourne out by the finish ramp at the Bloomfield hotel at 5.30pm on Sunday. Thanks to the organising clubs and to sponsors www.sleatoropel.com and to fellow associate sponsors Tom Holton of Holton uPVC and Patsy Carberry of Ardee Sand and gravel. Finally not forgetting that after the last round and all the points are tallied all roads will lead to Prize Giving in Grants Hotel Roscrea on Saturday 22nd October 2005, and this event is being hosted by the Birr & District Auto Club. It promises to be a night of prizes and also great craic and tall stories at the bar, where every stage performance gets 10 seconds a mile faster in direct proportion to the amount of alcohol consumed!!! Single Stage Rally organised and promoted by Castle Automobile Club Ltd. This years Clerk of the Course Declan Tansey has chosen a stage sure to challenge every element of the drivers & navigator’s skill. This years event is moving away from Oldcastle back to Mullingar, and back to The Bloomfield House Hotel after a gap of a couple of years. Mullingar should be well familiar with the event as it ran from there all through the 90’s and also in 2000. The Club are also delighted to be part of the Midlands East Rally Championship with the Castle Single Stage rally being the final round. The title sponsor of this Chamionship is also our co-sponsor for this years event, Sleator – Opel of Mullingar. The rally weekend starts out on Saturday afternoon with mechanical scrutiny taking place in the Sleator – Opel premises, where all of the best cars entered in the event can be seen and admired. Many thanks to Jack Sleator and the Sleator – Opel team for coming on board to help out the event this year , and also to Seamus Laffin and his staff from the Bloomfield House Hotel. On Sunday the 11th September the cars will be flagged off from the start ramp at 11.15am, to fight it out over approximately 30 competitive stage miles split into 3 Special Stages in the Delvin area, with a centralized service area based in the Cattle Mart in Delvin Co. Westmeath. The stage itself is a mixture of fast, open and twisty sections, where there is sure to be a part to suit all cars and competitors alike. The winning car will arrive back at the Bloomfield House Hotel at approximately 5.30pm. Full details on stage location, starting times and competitor entry list will be included in the official colour programme which will be available in local Newsagents, Service Stations and at Rally HQ from Friday 9th September. C.O.C Declan Tansey has enrolled the help of marshals from Midland Motor Club, Birr & District Auto Club, Monaghan Motor Club, ALMC Motor Club and Cavan Motor Club . Regulations and Entry forms are available from below or by contacting Aoife Smith on 086-3518765 (+353 86-3518765) and by e-mail castlerally@eircom.net
