Gareth McHale/ Paul Nagle (Corolla WRC) took a slender 9 second victory on Round 2 of the "McCauley Trailers" National Forest Rally Championship based in Mitchelstown Easter Sunday 27h March. The young Dublin man withdrew his entry from the Circuit of Ireland to concentrate on the Forest Championship and now holds a 6-point lead in the series. The event was a great success with 97 starters including a host of 205 Challenge contenders on their final round of the inaugural Irish 205 Challenge. Hankook Tyres came on board as event sponsor to launch their new competition tyres.

McHale led from the opening 10-mile Kilworth stage, where he held an 8 sec advantage over Adrian McElvaney/ Paul Goodman (Impreza 555). John McCarthy (Corolla WRC) and Dermot Kelly (Escort WRC) tied for third 1 sec in arrears while Pat Norris (Impreza 555) and Glen Allen (Escort WRC) tied in fifth 11 secs down. Stephen Moore/ Tony McHugh led the Gp N category, 7th fastest in Kilworth having rebuilt his N10 Subaru overnight after melting a piston on the Easter Stages. Brian Lawlor/ Peter Kavanagh were flying, 8th fastest and best 2WD. James Murphy/ Anthony Nestor (Escort Cosworth) in 9th had ECU troubles and Derry man Johnny McKenna (Evo 6) completed the top ten.

The event moved to the Goaten Bridge complex near Clogheen for ss2. This was a very fast flowing stage with plenty of flat out downhill smooth sections. Glen Allen/ Damien Connolly (Escort WRC) set FTD, the Tyrone man won the Easter stages with his new Corolla WRC and was anxious for a result on his final fling in the Escort. Adrian McElvaney was only 2 secs adrift - the Monaghan man now just 6 secs off the lead. Third fastest Gareth McHale tied with Pat Norris, 2 secs down on McElvaney. Third placed John McCarthy was slowed a little by an oil leak that had smeared his screen. Going into ss3, "Cambaun Wood" there was only 14 secs separating the top five so it was all to play for.

John McCarthy with his Hankook shod Corolla got it together and stamped his authority over this classic stage, set FTD and a new record as he stopped the clocks on 6:49 - 5 secs up on young gun McHale. There was plenty of drama as Dermot Kelly first on the road slid wide on a fast downhill approach into a square left and cut a tyre. Adrian McElvaney was sidelined again as his Impreza blew a head gasket - a real disappointment as this man has the pace and only needs a bit of luck to clinch victory. Kevin O'Kane/ Martin Hanna retired their Impreza WRC due to an engine misfire. James Murphy put his Escort off the road ending his day. Glen Allen lost time due to a fault with the response system.

At the lunchtime service halt in Mitchelstown Gareth McHale continued to lead albeit 6 secs ahead of McCarthy's Corolla. Pat Norris/ Declan Tumilty held third 20 secs back. Dermot Kelly was a further second down while Glen Allen completed the top five after the first loop. The Gp N contenders were having it out hot and heavy as only 9 secs separated the top four. McKenna led, Moore trailed by a second, Pete Willoughby (Evo 8) was 2 secs back and Cavan's Patrick Elliott also in an Evo 8 rounded off the top four - six secs off Willoughby. The 2WD brigade fought tooth and nail as Brian Lawlor (Escort 16v) held a top ten spot and led Frank Kelly (Escort 16v), who was at a loss as to his time on the opening stage but had swopped times with Lawlor on the other two.

The event returned to Kilworth Forest where Gareth McHale settled the score - the Dubliner seems to up the pace at his pearl. McHale opted for the wider Kumho tyre at service and was well impressed with the high-speed stability - the result: McHale set a blistering time 13 secs clear of Pat Norris and a staggering 19 secs up on McCarthy's similar Corolla. McHale was on a roll and set FTD through ss5, the repeat of Goaten Bridge. McCarthy stopped the clocks only 1 sec down as did Glen Allen who seemed to revel in these flat out fast forests.

The final stage was a repeat of "Cambaun Wood" McHale seemed safe with a 26 sec advantage and set his mind to bring it home, but a costly stall on the start line left it all to play for through this final seven-mile test. John McCarthy ruled the roost and seems to be untouchable on "Cambaun" as he set a new all time record 6:47 - 2 secs quicker than his previous run and 17 up on McHale. Dermot Kelly suffered another puncture on his favourite stage, not so kind to him this year. Pat Norris was second fastest despite a misfire and Glen Allen lost almost half a minute with an off road excursion.

Gareth McHale/ Paul Nagle turned in a fine drive; his second win on only his second drive on gravel with his Kumho shod Corolla. The young Dubliner has no regrets having pulled out of the Circuit of Ireland as he now holds a six point led in the "McCauley Trailers National Forest Championship". John McCarthy/ MJ Morrissey came on very strong in the afternoon; the Cork man has shown a return to form and victory in the Toyota beckons. Pat Norris/ Declan Tumilty took third with their Impreza 555. Glen Allen/ Damien Connolly finished fourth on their final Escort outing - Glen will use his newly acquired Corolla WRC in Wicklow. Dermot Kelly/ Greg Shinnors (Escort WRC) finished fifth, their progress hampered by punctures.

Group N was all to play for; only 10 secs separated McKenna, Moore and Willoughby before Cambaun, where Willoughby set fourth fastest time - McKenna trailed by a second with Moore a further second back. Tyrone man Stephen Moore clinched (class 8) Gp N and 6th overall, Pete Willoughby/ Greg McCarthy were second in class and 7th overall - 8 secs off rival Moore. Patrick Elliott/ Mark Bowens (Evo 8) took third in class and 8th overall. Johnny McKenna/ Paul Howe dropped to 9th overall after incurring road penalties. Brian Lawlor/ Peter Kavanagh (Escort 16v) had to cope with an ailing gearbox all afternoon. The Wicklow pairing finished 10th overall, best 2WD and took class five honours by only 5 secs from Frank Kelly/ John Shevlin (Escort 16v) who were just outside the top ten.

Ventry brothers Alan/ Tony Dineen took another class 1 win with their Nova. Class 2 went to Mick Nevin/ John Kinahan (Escort). Donegal's Adrian S McElhinney/ Martin McMenamin pushed hard taking the spoils in the 205 Challenge. Matt Shinnors/ Janice Mackeral (Escort 1600 16v) powered their way to 20th overall and class 3 honours. Jason/ Patrick Roche (Escort 2.0) finished 21st and clinched class 4. Andrew Kearney/ Owen O'Neill were the only survivors in class 7, taking max points with their 206. Conor Kelly/ John Quill (Nova) took the junior class by storm with a 34 sec victory on his second ever event.

The numbers continue to grow with more competitors including juniors having signed up for the Championship. Jim O'Brien and his team ran a successful event, perfect weather and newly surfaced stages made for a supper rally and it was great to see the majority of competitors make the finishers list.

Gareth MacHale Report
Leading the forestry championship after his maiden win on the opening round would see a confident Gareth MacHale take a start to finish victory on the second round, the Sean Conlon Memorial Rally in Mitchelstown.

Facing competition from John McCarthy, Glenn Allen and Adrian McElvaney Gareth would start the day very well with fastest time. He would drop time on the following two stages as his tyres went off but would still enter service in the lead.

A change of tyre compound would see him flying on the fourth stage where he was fastest by nineteen seconds. He would gain another second on the following stage but would loose seventeen seconds on the final stage after a start-line stall.

Two wins from two starts now leaves Gareth in a very strong championship position but he acknowledges that there is a long way to go in the series still.

Matt Shinnors makes class winning return to the Irish Forests
After a year long absence from the McCauley Trailers National Forest Championship the team returned for the Mitchelstown rally on Easter Sunday. Monaghan’s Janice Mackeral joined the team for this demanding event that was set in the Galtee Mountains.

The rally consisted of 6 stages in the form of 3 done twice offering a testing 50 stage miles forestry event. The event attrached a capacity entry with 97 cars starting including all the top class 3 cars, Paul Mulcahy (Starlet), Moss Fitzgerald & Ivan Bryan (Corrolla’s) to name a few.


Photo: raggededge.net The first stage based in Kilworth complex was a 10-mile stage, the team completed the stage 2nd fastest two wheel drive car and had an 8 second advantage over their class rival Paul Mulcahy’s in his Orange Starlet. After the following two stages Goatain Bridge and Cambaun Wood, Paul Mulcahy pulled out a lead of 32 seconds from Matt with Ivan Bryan 3rd 20 seconds further back.

After service Kilworth stage was repeated, Matt competing stage 6 seconds slower than previous run but time was good enough for 5th fastest two wheel drive car. On the start of stage 5 the 8 mile Goatain Bridge test, Matt picked up a slow rear puncher rear and completed the stage 25 seconds slower than on first run through stage. With one stage remaining Matt kept pushing for a result and came back to Mitchelstown to win the class due to Paul Mulcahy incurring a time plenty. Ivan Bryan finished second with Mulcahy slotting to third.

It was great comeback to forestry series and now team look forward to switching to Tarmac for the Junior Rally of Lakes on May Bank Holiday weekend

Golden Graeme Takes Irish 205 Challenge
The first ever Irish 205 Challenge came to an exciting climax at the final round, the Tipperary Forestry Rally this weekend. Battles loomed in all categories of the championship with the overall title being fought out between Graeme Colfer and Seamus O'Grady.

On the dry gravel stages it was young Adrian McBride/Brian Smullen who set the early pace, as both championship hopefuls hit mechanical trouble and after three stages it was McBride who led the field with Adrian McElhinney/Martin McMenamin just 11 seconds behind and the all lady crew of Emma Britton/Paula Nooney in 3rd.

Graeme Colfer/Jack Newman retired on the next stage and they were left waiting to see where Seamus O'Grady/Oonagh Roche would finish the event. At the front of the field McElhinney took the lead on SS4 and extended this lead ever McBride on the next two stages to take victory by over two minutes. This win always saw McElhinney take the Senior Championship in the Irish 205 Challenge.

In the championship fight, O'Grady battled through his mechanical difficulties and finished the event 3rd following the retirement of Emma Britton. However 3rd place was not enough for crowning glory and Graeme Colfer became the first ever Irish 205 Challenge champion. His consistency and speed throughout the year also saw him take the Junior Championship.

The co-drivers title went to Oonagh Roche, co-driver to championship runner up Seamus O'Grady.

However it was Colfer's day, a day that made him double champion, the first every Irish 205 Challenge title holder and saw him take away a cheque for €2000 from championship sponsor Rory Galligan Rally.

The 2005 Irish 205 Challenge is now in its final stages of preparation and will begin on 10th April with the Midland Multi Stage Rally.

Event Preview
Round 2 of the “McCauley Trailers” National Forest Rally Championship based in Mitchelstown Easter Sunday 27th March, has attracted over one hundred entries. COC Jim O’Brien has put together a compact event with 6 stages in the form of 3 done twice offering a testing 50 stage miles with service in the Galtee car park (Mitchelstown). Among the capacity line up are the “Irish 205 Challenge” contenders on their final round. The event will run a reverse format of previous years starting with a 10-mile stage in the Kilworth complex

Dermot Kelly heads the field with his Escort WRC, Kelly will be anxious to score points having missed the opening round due to a last minute gearbox glitch. Number 2 seed, Glenn Allen (Escort WRC) is competing in the Easter stages on Saturday and should be well on the pace Sunday morning.

At 3, (Corolla WRC) has forsaken his Circuit of Ireland entry and plans to contest all the forest rounds after his Carrick victory.

Kevin O’Kane is at 4 with his Harper run Impreza WRC. Number 5 seed, Pat Norris is always on the pace (Impreza 555). John McCarthy is at 6 and a very hot favourite to take the spoils with his Corolla WRC – McCarthy won here in ’03 and led in ’04 but dropped to third on the final stage after a spin, stall and puncture. At 7, Adrian McElvaney (Impreza 555) was best of the rest in Carrick until he broke a gearlinkage. The young Monaghan man has set serious times having only done a handfull of forest events and should be well in contention. Number 8, James Murphy (Escort Cosworth) went well here last year – Murphy a man to watch on these fast stages.

Cavan’s Patrick Elliott leads the GpN line up at number 9 in a Robbie McGurk Evo 8. Pete Willoughby (Evo 8) rounds off the top ten. At 11, Johnny McKenna (Evo 6) and 12, Stephen Moore (N10 Impreza). Number 13, Brian Lawlor (Escort 16v) is top 2WD seed followed by local John Drislane who returns from the USA and has hired a McKinstry Impreza WRC.

The first competing car will leave the start ramp from the Square in Mitchelstown at 10:30. Drivers will have to be quick out of the box as “Kilworth” offers a bit of everything with lots of junctions, fast/ smooth sections into narrow, tight and twisty bits - a tough start to this short snappy ’04 and proved to be very fast with its hard smooth surface – dust was the only drawback.

The event heads to Co. Limerick for ss3 “Cambaun Wood” a classic fast/ flowing stage sure to see the locals set the pace. After Cambaun the crews return to Mitchelstown for the lunchtime service in the Galtee Car Park before a repeat run over the loop of 3 stages with the first cars due back at the square in Mitchelstown at 5 pm.

Final Round Decider for Irish 205 Challenge
After five rounds and four different winners the Irish 205 Challenge is preparing for its final round. The race for the title is a two-way battle, which will be fought out at the Tipperary Forestry Stages Rally on 27th March. Nine points separate double winner Graeme Colfer and winner of the previous round Seamus O’Grady but with twenty points up for grabs, this event looks set to be a cracker.

The event is based in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork and will consist of a compact route with 50 stage miles. It is difficult to split the championship hopefuls; Graeme’s consistency and speed throughout the year will be difficult to beat, while Seamus took victory on the only other gravel round of the series.

As well as the overall title, the junior, senior and co-driver categories of the championship are also up for grabs in the woods. There is a three-way fight between, Colfer, O’Grady and Adrian McBride for the junior title; the senior title to open any of five different drivers and either Jack Newman or Oonagh Roche could lift the co-drivers title.

With all these battles going on, the final round of inaugural Rory Galligan Rally Irish 205 Challenge will certainly provide a lot of excitement.

Gareth MacHale/Paul Nagle have withdrawn their entry from the Circuit of Ireland, to compete on the 2nd round of the Forestry Championship. The Dublin/Kerry paring will start the event amoung the favourites after victory on the opening round.
