Difficult Learning Curve for Wilson nets top 20 result.
Peter Wilson the runner up in the 2004 Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman young driver Award Scheme headed to Cork for his maiden international rally in a 4wd Group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8. It was a challenging weekend which would see flashes of pace and commitment from Wilson followed by drama and mechanical difficulty but ultimately a satisfying top twenty finish on a rally where stages were demanding and the attrition rate punishing.

Partnered as usual by Westmeath Co driver J.P Kilmurray, Peter began the rally in fine fashion for his debut in the Evo 8, despite time and budget constraints restricting opportunities to test the car and despite catching another car in the first stage he put in a fine 5 th fastest group N time on stage 1 to end the stage 16th overall amongst the strongest group N and WRC competitors of the Pirelli International Tarmac Series.



Stage 2 saw the trend continue with Peter and J.P again catching a car in the stage and this time putting in 6th fastest group N time and holding 16 th o/a. Stage 3 was to bring about a down turn however with a massive 6th gear slide after being caught on oil which had also claimed the previous competitor. Luckily Peter held on and the brush with the scenery was fleeting, but damage was done and with stopping on stage to check a badly damaged rear wheel and the limp over the remaining miles over 2 minutes were lost and hopes of a good result severely dented.

The crew of the Foley RallySport team and James Cassidy Motors patched the broken suspension and associated damage as the day progressed through each service but it was the final stage of the day before Peter and J.P were in a position of enough confidence to push for a stage time and on the slippy mucky stage 8 they returned to 8th fastest in group N and 20th overall and at least still running in the rally and looking forward to a drier day 2.

Sunday of the Murphy Construction Cork 20 dawned much drier for the stages in the Mallow area and Wilson began with a 7th fastest in group N in his Navan Hire sponsored Evo 8, a slight overshoot on stage 10 did little to slow him down as the times were still in the top 6 of the group N battle.

However drama and cruel luck was to return on the appropriately numbered stage 13 when the rear diff failed on the start line and forced Wilson to limp through the short stage being caught near the finish by the following competitor. The situation had to remain grim for stage 14 with no service or support in between the stages and the hopes being able to limp to the end of the stage and making the short 20 minute service in Mallow before the final stage 15. Having made service the Foley and Cassidy mechanics put in a sterling effort to replace the diff unit and keep Wilson and co driver Kilmurray in the event and make it through the final stage and to the finish in Cork city. It was those difficult final few stages which saw the earlier time regained lost once again and a drop to 19th overall and 9th finisher in group N, a pity on one hand for what might have been, but a thoroughly enjoyable rally and promising pace when luck was on their side.

Peter and J.P now draw a close on their excellent season which earlier saw them win the class 2 title with the Navan Hire Honda Civic in the Pirelli Tarmac Championship with one round to complete. O’Mahony Finishes on a High
Team Birkbeck Rallysport driver, Brian O’Mahony, finished his 2005 Irish Tarmac Championship in fine style at last weekends Cork 20 International Rally. Brian, supported as always by OM Concrete Products, was re-united with regular co-driver John Higgins for the event which saw the Cork/Mayo pairing win Class 6 by a large margin and finish an impressive 14th overall and 1st in F2 in their Ford Puma.



“It’s been a great event for the whole team,” remarked Brian post event, “To come to my home event and put in a solid performance was very important to me. Team Birkbeck Rallysport made sure the car ran flawlessly and we did our best to keep a good pace throughout the entire event.”

Brian now adds the Class 6 title in the Pirelli Irish Rally Championship in to his BRC Super 1600. The team’s next outing is in Rally Ireland in two weeks time, where they hope to continue their winning ways.

JENNINGS TAKES IRISH TARMAC CROWN
Fermanagh’s Garry Jennings and Letterkenny’s Rory Kennedy took 2nd place in the Group N category on this weekend’s Murphy Construction Cork ‘20’ International Rally, sealing the 2005 Group N Irish Tarmac Championship title.



The pair had wheeled out a newly acquired Mitsubishi Evo 8 for the final round of the ultra competitive series, needing a clean finish to beat nearest rival Alan Nesbitt. The new car also sported new livery in the form of Autocar Logistics. The Wexford based company, which delivers nearly 500 vehicles daily throughout Ireland and the UK, is headed by director and former rally driver TJ Crosbie. “We were delighted to give the team our support as this is a local event for us,” explained Crosbie, “I’ve known Garry for some time and I’d like to think I had something to do with his progress in rallying.” He continued, “It was the car that I totalled in 2000 that Garry bought for his first year in the Peugeot Super 106 Cup. He proved he was talented by winning a Peugeot works drive a couple of years later.”

The 170 mile event began on Saturday morning with a boost for the KG Motorsport team when Nesbitt hit transmission trouble. “Apparently he’s got oil on the clutch,” explained Jennings at the first service, “I wouldn’t wish problems on anyone but it means we can relax a little bit and enjoy the rally.”

The programme of eight stages on day one allowed Garry and Rory to get used to the new car and the pair had set a fastest time by stage 3, pipping class leader Colm Murphy by three seconds. “We’ve been braking too early,” said Garry, “and the active differentials take a wee bit of getting used to.” By the end of the day the tally was two stage wins and four second places with Aaron MacHale squeezing them to third on a couple of occasions. “Colm is putting in a fine performance,” said Garry at the final service, “and it is very tempting to go after him, but our focus is definitely on the Irish Tarmac title and I don’t want to take unnecessary risks at this stage.”

As the sun broke through for the start of day two the crews faced a further seven stages in near perfect conditions. Any challenge from Nesbitt had vanished and the stages where MacHale had beaten the pair into third amounted to nothing, when he retired on stage thirteen with rear differential failure. The Jennings Fuels backed Mitsubishi pegged the gap to Murphy at just over a minute, Garry reacting with a further two fastest times in the closing stages. “It’s a real shame we’ve had to behave on this event,” said Jennings before the final test, “I would have loved to have battled for the win but hopefully in about nine minutes it will have been worth it.”

True to his word the clock stopped at nine minutes and six seconds and with it the season-long tussle for the coveted Group N Irish Tarmac Championship title. “We’ve taken four wins this year, all in an old Evo 6.” beamed Garry at the finish, “It’s been a fantastic year but I’m just relieved that the new car has been just as reliable. It was always a risk but she’s been absolutely no trouble and the tyres have stood up really well again.” The result leaves both Rory and Garry an impressive sixth in the Irish Tarmac Championship overall standings.

The second place also secures the co-drivers title for Rory Kennedy who only missed the Manx through other commitments. “It has been fabulous to sit alongside Garry this year.” he said, “He has reinforced his ability to adapt, having won the Peugeot works seat in front wheel drive machinery, he has make his mark in a four wheel drive car. The team worked tirelessly to keep the old Evo reliable and this new car has proved they do a consistently excellent job.”

The KG Motorsport team celebrate the win with Kumho Tyres, Autocar Logistics, Trunk Flooring, all at Jennings Fuels and Lubricants, Auto Part Centre, Sydare Eggs and The Mallard Bar.

The celebrations will have to be slightly curtailed though, as there are only two weeks before Rally Ireland, the pilot event for Ireland’s inclusion in the World Rally Championship. Garry and Rory are seeded at car eleven with an impressive field of WRC machinery ahead.

Colm Murphy Prepared for 20
Colm Murphy and Ger Loughrey have not endured the luckiest of seasons in 2005. Recently, a blown turbo on the Ulster rally robbed them of a possible fantastic result as they put it right up to the dominant Mitsubishi UK works drivers.

In rallying however, dwelling on a retirement does little good and last weekend saw the Limerick duo turn out in Ennis for the Lynch Hotels Clare rally, the penultimate round of the national tarmac championship. The crew decided not to register for championship points so as not to interfere with the overall result – happy to settle for the shakedown the event would provide them and the Pirelli shod car.

A fantastic GroupN entry left the Clare capital on Sunday morning with national championship leader Michael Curran at number 10 leading the field away, the Thermia Heatlink and Eddie Garry Car Sales sponsored MRallying car in close attendance at number 11. Stage 1 saw drama when the fuse box cover came loose and got stuck under Colm’s feet – not something you want beneath your brake pedal all things considered!

Despite this, the Transplant trailers car returned to service 4 seconds up on Curran. The second loop of stages saw the crew double this lead to 8 seconds, their Pirellis working overtime in the beautiful September conditions.

The final two stages were dispatched and, despite a stall which Colm estimated at costing between 10 and 15 seconds, the Murray Motorsport sponsored pair returned to St Flannan’s College in Ennis victorious by 9 seconds, a tight margin. Colm, obviously delighted reckoned “that was a great rally, a fantastic battle with Michael. It’s been a tough year this so far but hopefully we can extend this form and cap it on a high with a good result on the Cork ’20!”.

The Cork event takes place this weekend, based in the Rochestown Park hotel. With 170 stage miles lying before the competitors, the rally will prove a tough test of both car and driver.

Peter Wilson lines up for Group N Challenge.
Young Meath man and 2005 Billy Coleman Award Runner up Peter Wilson is set to tackle this weekends Murphy Construction Cork 20 Rally making the step up to a Group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 hired from James Foley Rallysport.

Having clinched the Class 2 award in the Pirelli Irish Tarmac Championship with a fine performance on the recent Ulster rally Peter has with the support of his sponsors and friends managed to secure a deal to finish off the championship by moving up to a Lancer for the final round, in the hope of gaining experience and ideally another solid result to round off his year.

Peter commented "We were lucky enough to secure the championship with Cork still to arrive, that was a bonus for me but I still wanted to finish the year out and if possible try something different and we have been lucky enough to get some support from sponsors and friends to allow us try an Evo 8 for Cork, it's a big step up and there is no time or budget for testing, but we will play ourselves in and see how it works out, our main aim is to be still there on Sunday evening"

Peter will again be partnered by co driver J.P Kilmurray who has guided Peter to success on previous occasions this year. Most recently they made their 4wd Group N debut on the Sleator Opel Castle Single Stage and surprised many onlookers with a fine debut to take Group N and 4 th overall, experience gained on those 3 short stages will be of some benefit this weekend as the pair line up for Cork in a newer spec car.

The rally kicks off in Cork City early on Saturday morning and travels to the Macroom area for the competitive mileage. Peter Wilson will be one of approx 27 drivers starting in Group N, which will include drivers of calibre such as Gary Jennings, Colm Murphy, Willie Fannin, Alan Ring and others some of whom are locked in their own championship battle. So the pace will no doubt be ferocious from the word go.

Peter is supported by Navan Hire, James Cassidy Motors Moynalty, G Wilson Building Contractor, Keenan Bauer Mitsubishi Mullingar and James Foley Rallysport.

Jennings to Use Evo 8
Garry Jennings will contest the forthcoming Cork ‘20’ International Rally needing to finish just sixth to secure the Pirelli Irish Tarmac Group N title.

His aim, however, will also be to secure the co-drivers’ title for 1992 overall event winner Rory Kennedy.

The pair intends to wheel out the newly acquired Mitsubishi Evo 8 and Garry’s goal will be the top three. “If we go out for a drive in the country Rory could miss out on the title. So it will have to be a balance between speed and caution.” said Jennings with a smile, “Obviously it would be great to take the title with a win, but we will only have time to test the car once, so we’ll have to take it easy early on.”

The car will be prepared and run as usual by the team at KG Motorsport which has done such a great job all year. They will also have an eye on the overall championship table where Garry lies a very impressive sixth behind five World Rally cars. “The Kumhos have made a big difference,” reported Peter Jennings, “It’s great to see big brother up there with the best of them and I think the advice and support we’ve had from Kumho has helped to keep us at the front.”

The finale of the series starts in Cork on Saturday 1st October at 8am with around 170 miles of tough asphalt ahead of an impressive field of over 150 cars. Pairs of stages on both days will be separated by centralised service and the finish will be at the Rochestown Park Hotel at around 5pm on Sunday.

Whatever the result, Garry and all the team would like to thank all their supporters this year, in particular all the staff and customers at Jennings Fuels and Lubricants.
