23/11/05 The 2005 Irish National Rally Championship will be sponsored by Dunlop, who are to continue to underpin this popular ten round series. The season will begin in early March with the Mayo Rally and some seven months later will conclude with the Fastnet Rally in Glandore, West Cork. Speaking at the presentation of awards for the 2004 Dunlop National Rally Championship series at the Brandon Hotel, Tralee, on Saturday 20th November, Richard Warbrick of Irish Dunlop said, “We are delighted to continue our successful association with the National Rally Championship. There is no doubt that the season just concluded was particularly exciting, especially with the destination of the overall title and indeed, several of the classes going to the final round. The quality of the entry reflected how the series has grown in strength and stature over recent years and we are looking forward to another good season in 2005”. The scoring system for both overall and class will remain unaltered. Within the overall context, the first Dunlop registered competitor on each event will receive 20 points with the points structure decreasing as follows 18/16/14/13/12/11/10/9/8/7/6/5/4/3. In the 15 classes, the points system is as follows: 10/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1. The three events that are on the “opt out” for 2005 are Carlow, Monaghan and Donegal. Reigning Dunlop champion, Niall Maguire, the only driver to win three national titles (1999, 2001 and 2004) will defend his crown while the likes of Patrick Elliott and Jim Harrison, who completed the 2004 top three in the series, have also confirmed their participation for 2005. Also confirmed for 2005 is the continuation of the Patterson’s RallyNews Award, this season’s inaugural award for the top Group N driver was won by Willie Fannin.
