MOTORSPORT IRELAND INITIATIVE TO PROMOTE FORESTRY RALLYING

The first three competitors in the overall standings following this year’s National Forestry Rally Championship will all be guaranteed free entry to the Wales Rally GB which takes place 17-19 September this year. This initiative, which is the brainchild of Motorsport Ireland, has been designed to promote forestry rallying.

In a further positive move to ensure continued growth in forestry rallies Motorsport Ireland will also provide organisers with a rebate of €2,000 per event in order to offset organisational costs in 2004. In recent years forestry rallies have become more popular in Ireland with entries now often exceeding 100 cars in each round. The third round of the 2004 championship, which is sponsored by McCauley Trailers, is due to take place on 18 April with the circuit of Wicklow rally, organised by the Motor Enthusiasts Club.

Speaking about these initiatives Mr John Naylor, chairman of Motorsport Ireland, said “This is an important initiative to promote one of our most valuable national resources which has sometimes been overlooked. Forestry rallying could be considered to be one of Irish motorsport’s best-kept secrets. Hopefully these initiatives will bring about a new awareness of what these events have to offer.”
