The Border Counties Rally - 22nd March 2003

2002 Peugeot 206 Super Cup winner Garry Jennings with co-driver Gordon Noble were one of three Super 1600 competitors competing on this weekend’s Border Counties Rally after the first round of the British Rally Championship, the Welsh Rally, was unexpectedly cancelled.

Starting from Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, the 45 competitive mile event uses stages in Kielder, which made it an ideal opportunity for the official BRC works team to experience the forest prior to the Pirelli International Rally.

Mick Linford, Peugeot Motorsport Manager commented; “There were a few teething problems on the event but that is why we chose to do the Borders as it gave us a chance to get some practice in Kielder and for the team to all work together before the pressure is really on for Garry.
The team worked hard on getting the car to work with the new Pirelli tyre, the new controlled tyre for the British Rally Championship 2003, having previously run on Michelin’s. I’m pleased we have got the first big hurdle over with. Garry should be more comfortable now with the car.”

After two small incidents Jennings commented; “Overall it’s been worthwhile coming to this event as it’s great preparation for the PBRC. We suffered a driveshaft failure in Stage 1 then the Stage got cancelled. Stage five was also testing after we slid in the stage losing time. I feel happier now about tackling Kielder forest in the 206 in a couple of weeks.”

Gordon Noble commented; “We set the fastest stage time (in class) on Stage 3 which was pleasing. This test has given us the confidence we needed for the first round of the BRC in a few weeks time.”
