Autotest ace Eamonn Byrne of Delgany and his Dublin navigator Paul Phelan scored their second victory in succession, and their third altogether, in the Circuit of Ireland Retrospective Trial when the three day event finished in Sligo after a mixture of driving tests, navigation and regularity sections.

Their Mini Cooper S, which led all the way from the Friday start in Downpatrick, was a clear 94 marks ahead of the Peugeot 404 of Kilkenny pair Mickey Gabbett and Mick Jackson, with Dubliners Rob Bolton and Ian McCulloch narrowly holding on to third place in their Hornet, being almost caught at the finish by the best Northern Ireland crew, Trevor Faulkner and Laurence Allan.
