Thanks to Colin Courtney

Every hardened rally spectator has stood at the side of a stage wondering how to get started in the sport, and if they'd be any good at it. Well, now's your chance to see if you have what it takes to become the next Nicky Grist or Robert Reid. The Newry and District Motor Club, together with the Rathfriland Motor Club are running a beginner's rally school in October, to teach wannabe co-drivers the trick of the trade, and help them on their way to a competition future. They'll also show you that a tulip is not only something that grows in your garden.

The course will run for five weeks on Wednesday nights throught October. The classes will be held in the Old George, Rathfriland, and will start on Wednesday the 9th October. The first three Wednesday nights will explain the different types of Rally navigation involved, including such items as tulips, map trace, grid reference, grid lines and spot heights.

Also explained will be rally timing, car preperation, and basically everything you will need to know about rally navigation, enough to get you up to speed for your first event.

On the fourth night will be a table top rally, which will show just how much you will have learnt from the previous 3 weeks, and will get you ready for your first event, which will be a 12-car navigation type event run on the final evening. You will then get a chance to put the previous four weeks into practice in competition, and the winner will be given a prize at the end of the night.

The nights of the classes are the 9th/16th/23rd and 30th of October, and the 12 car event will take place on the 6th of November. The price of the course has been set at £20 which will include everything you will need to participate, including all the maps you will use, and membership to the club of your choice. The price for members of either of the two clubs will be £15, and again will include everything needed for the course.
