Having missed out on receiving the Frank Keane Perpetual Trophy after winning the Motorsport Ireland Hillclimb/Sprint Challenge last year, Galway man Frank Byrnes was more determined than ever to get his hands on the prestigious trophy this season. In his 2.0 litre Oliver Walsh Motors (Hyundai) backed Formula Opel Reynard, consistent performances with eight wins and four second places put him at the top of the leaderboard at each event and in return helped to secure the title with two rounds to go.

Two second place finishes behind event newcomer, John Leinster in a more powerful Pilbeam at Donegal Motor Club's 'Golden Mile' Hillclimb ensured that Byrnes, a former Formula Vee race winner, was uncatchable in the points table.

"Eventhough John has one of the fastest cars anywhere on these shores, I had a great battle with the Northern Ireland Championship front-runner," said a delighted Frank Byres. "As the Championship last year was reduced to a 'Challenge' format due to foot and mouth, I lost out in raising the Frank Keane Trophy eventhough I won the title," added Frank. "This season the Hillclimb Championship is back to its full glory and I am delighted to have won it before the season end."
