2001 Dunlop National Hillclimb champion, Frank Byrnes, re-wrote the history books of Galway Motor Club by becoming the first Clubman driver to win his home event at the recent Ballyvaughan Hillclimb. The Oranmore native dominated each of the two Rounds of the Dunlop Series, putting him in a commanding position to defend his National title.

Day 1 saw Ballyryan Hill (near Fanore) replace the infamous infamous Corkscrew hill, which has had to be abandoned as the NRA placed "Cats Eyes" on it, making it too dangerous for racing. Frank Byrnes in his Reynard RF82 thundered up a wet and windswept Ballyryan hill to beat Michael A. Roche in a similar Reynard, by a staggering margin of over three seconds. The County Clare circuit on Sunday saw another dazzling performance from the current Connaught Tribune 'Sports Star of the Year' as comprehensively beat no less than three former Irish hillclimb champions Jenny Kennedy, Richard Young and Ronnie Maybin, stopping the clocks at 1m 53.09sec.

Photographs and more detailed results of the event, are available on the Galway Motor Club website www.iol.ie/~jordane/
